Tunneling induced absorption with competing Nonlinearities

We investigate tunneling induced nonlinear absorption phenomena in a coupled quantum-dot system. Resonant tunneling causes constructive interference in the nonlinear absorption that leads to an increase of more than an order of magnitude over the maximum absorption in a coupled quantum dot system without tunneling. Resonant tunneling also leads to a narrowing of the linewidth of the absorption peak to a sublinewidth level. Analytical expressions show that the enhanced nonlinear absorption is largely due to the fifth-order nonlinear term. Competition between third- and fifth-order nonlinearities leads to an anomalous dispersion of the total susceptibility.

Tunneling-induced optical bistability in an asymmetric double quantum well

Optical bistable behaviors induced by tunneling coupling are demonstrated in an asymmetric double quantum-well structure including a unidirectional ring cavity. We analytically find that optical bistability can be obtained with the existence of resonant tunneling. Furthermore, the threshold of the optical bistability can be modulated by the intensity or the detuning of the driving fields.

Controllable double tunneling induced transparency and solitons formation in a quantum dot molecule

We consider the coupling effect between interdot tunneling coupling and external optical control field to study the linear optical property and the formation of temporal optical solitons in a quantum dot molecules system, analytically. The results show that the double tunneling induced transparency (TIT) windows are appeared in the absorption curve of probe field because of the formation of dynamic Stark splitting and quantum destructive interference effect from the two upper levels. Interestingly, the width of the TIT window becomes wider with the increasing intensity of the optical control field. We also find that the Kerr nonlinear effect of the probe field can be modulated effectively through coherent control both the control field and the interdot tunneling coupling in this system. Meanwhile, we demonstrate that the formation of dark or bright solitons can be practical regulated by varying the intensity of the optical control field.
