Enhancement of nonlinear optical properties of BaTiO3 nanoparticles by the addition of silver seeds

Thin Films (FTO/BaTiO3/AgNPs) for Enhanced Piezo-Photocatalytic Degradation of Methylene Blue and Ciprofloxacin in Wastewater

In this study, we investigate the ability of barium titanate/silver nanoparticles (BaTiO₃/AgNPs) composites deposited on a fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) glass using tape-casting method to produce piezoelectric thin film (FTO/BaTiO₃/AgNPs) for piezocatalytic, photocatalytic, and piezo-photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue (MB) and ciprofloxacin (CIP) in wastewater. The prepared piezoelectric materials (BaTiO₃ and BaTiO₃/AgNPs) were characterized using XRD, SEM, TEM, EDS, UV-DRS, TGA, PL, BET, EIS, and chronoamperometry. The UV-DRS showed the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) of Ag nanoparticles on the surface of BaTiO₃ at a wavelength of 505 nm. The TEM images revealed the average Ag nanoparticle size deposited on the surface of BaTiO₃ to be in the range of 10-15 nm. The chronoamperometry showed that the photoreduction of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) onto BaTiO₃ (BTO) resulted in a piezo-electrochemical current enhancement from 0.24 to 0.38 mA. The composites (FTO/BaTiO₃/AgNPs) achieved a higher degradation of MB and CIP when the photocatalysis and piezocatalysis processes were merged. Under both ultrasonic vibration and UV light exposure, FTO/BTO/AgNPs degraded about 72 and 98% of CIP and MB from wastewater, respectively. These piezoelectric thin films were shown to be efficient and reusable even after five cycles, suggesting that they are highly stable. Furthermore, the reactive oxygen species studies demonstrated that hydroxyl radicals (·OH) were the most effective species during degradation of MB, with minor superoxide radicals (·O₂ ^-) and holes (h⁺). From this study, we were able to show that these materials can be used as multifunctional materials as they were able to degrade both the dye and pharmaceutical pollutants. Moreover, they were more efficient through the piezo-photocatalytic process.

Express20, 26511 (2012)10.1364/OE.20.026511]. An erroneous equation given in the manuscript is corrected with a more accurate equation in this comment.

Enhancing second harmonic generation in gold nanoring resonators filled with lithium niobate

Plasmonic nanorings provide the unique advantage of a pronounced plasmonic field enhancement inside their core. If filled with a polarizable medium, it may significantly enhance its optical effects. Here, we demonstrate this proposition by filling gold nanorings with lithium niobate. The generated second harmonic signal is compared to the signal originating from an unpatterned lithium niobate surface. Measurements and simulation confirm an enhancement of about 20. Applications requiring nanoscopic localized light sources like fluorescence spectroscopy or quantum communication will benefit from our findings.

Effect of Silver Coating on Barium Titanium Oxide Nanoparticle Toxicity

Nanoparticles are presently being studied for optical and biomedical applications such as medical imaging and drug delivery. Nanoparticles impact the cellular environment due to many variables such as size, shape, and composition. How these factors affect cell viability is not fully understood. The purpose of this study is to test the toxicity effects of silver coating (Ag@) Barium Titanium Oxide (BaTiO₃) nanoparticles on Rhesus Monkey Retinal Endothelial cells (RhREC's) in culture. The addition of silver to the nanoparticles increases their nonlinear optical properties significantly, making the Ag@BaTiO₃ nanoparticles good candidates for nonlinear microscopy contrast agents. We hypothesize that by silver coating nanoparticles, there will be an increase in cell viability at higher concentrations when compared to non-silver coated nanoparticles. RhREC's were treated with BaTiO₃ and Ag@BaTiO₃ at concentrations of 0, 1.0, 10.0, and 100µg/ml for 24 hours at 37°C + 5%CO₂. After 24 hour incubation with respective nanoparticles, cell viability was determined using the trypan blue dye-exclusion method. Treatment with 0, 1.0 and 10.0µg/ml of Ag@BaTiO₃ had minimal effect on cell viability, with 90% viable cells remaining at the end of the 24 hours treatment period. However, cells treated with 100µg/ml of Ag@BaTiO₃ resulted in a decrease to 51% viable cells. Comparatively, cells treated with 0, 1.0 and 10µg/ml of BaTiO₃ had no significant effect on cell viability (90% viable cells after treatment) while the 100µg/ml treatment resulted in a decrease to 29% viable cells. These results show that silver coating of BaTiO₃ nanoparticles has a protective effect on cellular toxicity at high concentrations.
