Temporal and spatial effects inside a compact and CEP stabilized, few-cycle OPCPA system at high repetition rates

8 fs laser pulses from a compact gas-filled multi-pass cell

Compression of 42 fs, 0.29 mJ pulses from a Ti:Sapphire amplifier down to 8 fs (approximately 3 optical cycles) is demonstrated by means of spectral broadening in a compact multi-pass cell filled with argon. The efficiency of the nonlinear pulse compression is limited to 45 % mostly by losses in the mirrors of the cell. The experimental results are supported by 3-dimensional numerical simulations of the nonlinear pulse propagation in the cell that allow us to study spatio-spectral properties of the pulses after spectral broadening.

Thin-disk laser-pumped OPCPA system delivering 4.4 TW few-cycle pulses

We present an optical parametric chirped pulse amplification (OPCPA) system delivering 4.4 TW pulses centered at 810 nm with a sub-9 fs duration and a carrier-envelope phase stability of 350 mrad. The OPCPA setup pumped by sub-10 ps pulses from two Yb:YAG thin-disk lasers at 100 Hz repetition rate is optimized for a high conversion-efficiency. The terawatt pulses of the OPCPA are utilized for generating intense extreme ultraviolet (XUV) pulses by high-order harmonic generation, achieving XUV pulse energies approaching the microjoule level.

Continuous every-single-shot carrier-envelope phase measurement and control at 100 kHz

With the emergence of high-repetition-rate few-cycle laser pulse amplifiers aimed at investigating ultrafast dynamics in atomic, molecular, and solid-state science, the need for ever faster carrier-envelope phase (CEP) detection and control has arisen. Here we demonstrate a high-speed, continuous, every-single-shot measurement and fast feedback scheme based on a stereo above-threshold ionization time-of-flight spectrometer capable of detecting the CEP and pulse duration at a repetition rate of up to 400 kHz. This scheme is applied to a 100 kHz optical parametric chirped pulse amplification few-cycle laser system, demonstrating improved CEP stabilization and allowing for CEP tagging.

Sub-4 fs laser pulses at high average power and high repetition rate from an all-solid-state setup

The generation of high average power, carrier-envelope phase (CEP) stable, near-single-cycle pulses at a repetition rate of 100 kHz is demonstrated using an all solid-state setup. By exploiting self-phase modulation in thin quartz plates and air, the spectrum of intense pulses from a high-power, high repetition rate non-collinear optical parametric chirped pulse amplifier (NOPCPA) is extended to beyond one octave, and pulse compression down to 3.7 fs is achieved. The octave-spanning spectrum furthermore allows performing straightforward f-to-2f interferometry by frequency-doubling the long-wavelength part of the spectrum. Excellent CEP-stability is demonstrated for extended periods of time. A full spatio-spectral characterization of the compressed pulses shows only minor asymmetries between the two perpendicular beam axes. We believe that the completed system represents the first laser system satisfying all requirements for performing high repetition rate attosecond pump-probe experiments with fully correlated detection of all ions and electrons produced in the experiment.

CEP-stable few-cycle pulses with more than 190 μJ of energy at 100 kHz from a noncollinear optical parametric amplifier

Noncollinear optical parametric amplifiers (NOPAs) have become the leading technique for the amplification of carrier-envelope phase (CEP)-stable, few-cycle pulses at high repetition rate and high average power. In this Letter, a NOPA operating at a repetition rate of 100 kHz delivering more than 24 W of average power before compression is reported. The amplified bandwidth supports sub-7 fs pulse durations and pulse compression close to the transform limit is realized. CEP stability after amplification is demonstrated. The system paves the way to attosecond pump-probe spectroscopy with electron-ion coincidence detection.

Close to transform-limited, few-cycle 12 µJ pulses at 400 kHz for applications in ultrafast spectroscopy

Non-collinear optical parametric amplification has become the leading technology for amplifying few-cycle carrier-envelope phase (CEP) stable pulses to high energy at extreme repetition rates. In this work, a parametric amplifier system devoted to ultrafast photoionization experiments with coincidence detection is reported. The amplifier delivers CEP-stable few-cycle pulses with an average power of 5 W, and operates at repetition rates between 400 and 800 kHz. Close to transform-limited compression of the few-cycle pulses is achieved with minimized spatio-temporal distortions. Potential limitations introduced by spatio-temporal couplings to applications in attosecond science are analyzed. In particular, it is shown that pulse front tilt resulting from non-collinear amplification can considerably reduce the asymmetry in stereo above threshold ionization (stereo-ATI) experiments.

Multipass OPCPA system at 100 kHz pumped by a CPA-free solid-state amplifier

We present a compact few-cycle 100 kHz OPCPA system pumped by a CPA-free picosecond Nd:YVO₄ solid-state amplifier with all-optical synchronization to an ultra-broadband Ti:sapphire oscillator. This pump approach shows an exceptional conversion rate into the second harmonic of almost 78%. Efficient parametric amplification was realized by a two stage double-pass scheme with following chirped mirror compressor. The amount of superfluorescence was measured by an optical cross-correlation. Pulses with a duration of 8.7 fs at energies of 18 µJ are demonstrated. Due to the peak power of 1.26 GW, this simple OPCPA approach forms an ideal high repetition rate driving source for high-order harmonic generation.

Generation of multi-octave spanning high-energy pulses by cascaded nonlinear processes in BBO

We present the generation of optical pulses with a spectral range of 500-2400 nm and energies up to 10 µJ at 1 kHz repetition rate by cascaded second-order nonlinear interaction of few-cycle pulses in beta-barium borate (BBO). Numerical simulations with a 1D+time split-step model are performed to explain the experimental findings. The large bandwidth and smooth spectral amplitude of the resulting pulses make them an ideal seed for ultra-broadband optical parametric chirped pulse amplification and an attractive source for spectroscopic applications.

CEP-stable, sub-6 fs, 300-kHz OPCPA system with more than 15 W of average power

We report on a CEP-stable OPCPA system reaching multi-GW peak powers at 300 kHz repetition rate. It delivers 15 W of average power, over 50 µJ of compressed pulse energy and a pulse duration below 6 fs. By implementing an additional pump-seed-synchronization, the output parameters are stabilized over hours with power fluctuations of less than 1.5%.

500 kHz OPCPA delivering tunable sub-20 fs pulses with 15 W average power based on an all-ytterbium laser

An optical parametric chirped pulse amplifier fully based on Yb lasers at 500 kHz is described. Passive optical-synchronization is achieved between a fiber laser-pumped white-light and a 515 nm pump produced with a 200 W picosecond Yb:YAG InnoSlab amplifier. An output power up to 19.7 W with long-term stability of 0.3% is demonstrated for wavelength tunable pulses between 680 nm and 900 nm and spectral stability of 0.2%; 16.5 W can be achieved with a bandwidth supporting 5.4 fs pulses. We demonstrate compression of 30 µJ pulses to sub-20 fs duration with a prism compressor, suitable for high harmonic generation.

Thermal properties of borate crystals for high power optical parametric chirped-pulse amplification

The potential of borate crystals, BBO, LBO and BiBO, for high average power scaling of optical parametric chirped-pulse amplifiers is investigated. Up-to-date measurements of the absorption coefficients at 515 nm and the thermal conductivities are presented. The measured absorption coefficients are a factor of 10-100 lower than reported by the literature for BBO and LBO. For BBO, a large variation of the absorption coefficients was found between crystals from different manufacturers. The linear and nonlinear absorption coefficients at 515 nm as well as thermal conductivities were determined for the first time for BiBO. Further, different crystal cooling methods are presented. In addition, the limits to power scaling of OPCPAs are discussed.
