Hollow metallic waveguides integrated with terahertz quantum cascade lasers

3.9 THz spatial filter based on a back-to-back Si-lens system

We present a terahertz spatial filter consisting of two back-to-back (B2B) mounted elliptical silicon lenses and an opening aperture defined on a thin gold layer between the lenses. The beam filtering efficiency of the B2B lens system is investigated by simulation and experiment. Using a unidirectional antenna coupled 3rd-order distributed feedback (DFB) quantum cascade laser (QCL) at 3.86 THz as the source, the B2B lens system shows 72% transmissivity experimentally with a fundamental Gaussian mode as the input, in reasonably good agreement with the simulated value of 80%. With a proper aperture size, the B2B lens system is capable of filtering the non-Gaussian beam from the QCL to a nearly fundamental Gaussian beam, where Gaussicity increases from 74% to 99%, and achieves a transmissivity larger than 30%. Thus, this approach is proven to be an effective beam shaping technique for QCLs, making them to be suitable local oscillators in the terahertz range with a Gaussian beam. Besides, the B2B lens system is applicable to a wide frequency range if the wavelength dependent part is properly scaled.

Investigation of hollow cylindrical metal terahertz waveguides suitable for cryogenic environments

The field of terahertz (THz) waveguides continues to grow rapidly, with many being tailored to suit the specific demands of a particular final application. Here, we explore waveguides capable of enabling efficient and accurate power delivery within cryogenic environments (< 4 K). The performance of extruded hollow cylindrical metal waveguides made of un-annealed and annealed copper, as well as stainless steel, have been investigated for bore diameters between 1.75 - 4.6 mm, and at frequencies of 2.0, 2.85 and 3.4 THz, provided by a suitable selection of THz quantum cascade lasers. The annealed copper resulted in the lowest transmission losses, < 3 dB/m for a 4.6 mm diameter waveguide, along with 90° bending losses as low as ~2 dB for a bend radius of 15.9 mm. The observed trends in losses were subsequently analyzed and related to measured inner surface roughness parameters. These results provide a foundation for the development of a wide array of demanding low-temperature THz applications, and enabling the study of fundamental physics.

Efficient dielectric metasurface collimating lenses for mid-infrared quantum cascade lasers

Light emitted from single-mode semiconductor lasers generally has large divergence angles, and high numerical aperture lenses are required for beam collimation. Visible and near infrared lasers are collimated using aspheric glass or plastic lenses, yet collimation of mid-infrared quantum cascade lasers typically requires more costly aspheric lenses made of germanium, chalcogenide compounds, or other infrared-transparent materials. Here we report mid-infrared dielectric metasurface flat lenses that efficiently collimate the output beam of single-mode quantum cascade lasers. The metasurface lenses are composed of amorphous silicon posts on a flat sapphire substrate and can be fabricated at low cost using a single step conventional UV binary lithography. Mid-infrared radiation from a 4.8 μm distributed-feedback quantum cascade laser is collimated using a polarization insensitive metasurface lens with 0.86 numerical aperture and 79% transmission efficiency. The collimated beam has a half divergence angle of 0.36° and beam quality factor of M2=1.02.

Efficient coupling of double-metal terahertz quantum cascade lasers to flexible dielectric-lined hollow metallic waveguides

The growth in terahertz frequency applications utilising the quantum cascade laser is hampered by a lack of targeted power delivery solutions over large distances (>100 mm). Here we demonstrate the efficient coupling of double-metal quantum cascade lasers into flexible polystyrene lined hollow metallic waveguides via the use of a hollow copper waveguide integrated into the laser mounting block. Our approach exhibits low divergence, Gaussian-like emission, which is robust to misalignment error, at distances > 550 mm, with a coupling efficiency from the hollow copper waveguide into the flexible waveguide > 90%. We also demonstrate the ability to nitrogen purge the flexible waveguide, increasing the power transmission by up to 20% at 2.85 THz, which paves the way for future fibre based terahertz sensing and spectroscopy applications.

THz waveguide adapters for efficient radiation out-coupling from double metal THz QCLs

We report the development of on-chip optical components designed to improve the out-coupling of double-metal terahertz (THz) frequency quantum cascade lasers (QCLs). A visible reshaping of the optical beam is achieved, independent of the precise waveguide configuration, by direct incorporation of cyclic-olefin copolymer (COC) dielectric optical fibers onto the QCL facet. A major improvement is further achieved by incorporating a micromachined feed-horn waveguide, assembled around the THz QCL and integrated with a slit-coupler. In its first implementation, we obtain a ± 20° beam divergence, offering the potential for high-efficiency radiation coupling from a metal-metal waveguide into optical fibers.
