All-fiber LP01-LP11 ultra-broadband mode converters based on T-superimposed long period gratings in PCF

In order to cover the bandwidth of optical fiber communication, a LP₀₁-LP₁₁ ultra-broadband mode converter based on triple superimposed long period grating in PCF is proposed and demonstrated. The transmission spectra of the D-SLPG with gratings pitches and the T-SLPG were simulated and analyzed. The simulation results on the D-SLPG indicate that the 3 dB bandwidth of the D-SLPG is more than 1.5 times than the 3 dB bandwidth of the independent LPG and the 3 dB bandwidth of T-SLPG approaches 2.6 times as much as the independent LPG. In the experiment, the mode converter based on PCF-T-SLPG covers the wavelength of S + C + L with 3 dB bandwidth of 121 nm from 1498 nm to 1619 nm. In addition, the mode converter based on PCF-T-SLPG can accomplish ultra-broadband transmission in any wavelength by adjusting the period of gratings.

Introduction to Photonics: Principles and the Most Recent Applications of Microstructures

Light has found applications in data transmission, such as optical fibers and waveguides and in optoelectronics. It consists of a series of electromagnetic waves, with particle behavior. Photonics involves the proper use of light as a tool for the benefit of humans. It is derived from the root word “photon”, which connotes the tiniest entity of light analogous to an electron in electricity. Photonics have a broad range of scientific and technological applications that are practically limitless and include medical diagnostics, organic synthesis, communications, as well as fusion energy. This will enhance the quality of life in many areas such as communications and information technology, advanced manufacturing, defense, health, medicine, and energy. The signal transmission methods used in wireless photonic systems are digital baseband and RoF (Radio-over-Fiber) optical communication. Microwave photonics is considered to be one of the emerging research fields. The mid infrared (mid-IR) spectroscopy offers a principal means for biological structure analysis as well as nonintrusive measurements. There is a lower loss in the propagations involving waveguides. Waveguides have simple structures and are cost-efficient in comparison with optical fibers. These are important components due to their compactness, low profile, and many advantages over conventional metallic waveguides. Among the waveguides, optofluidic waveguides have been found to provide a very powerful foundation for building optofluidic sensors. These can be used to fabricate the biosensors based on fluorescence. In an optical fiber, the evanescent field excitation is employed to sense the environmental refractive index changes. Optical fibers as waveguides can be used as sensors to measure strain, temperature, pressure, displacements, vibrations, and other quantities by modifying a fiber. For some application areas, however, fiber-optic sensors are increasingly recognized as a technology with very interesting possibilities. In this review, we present the most common and recent applications of the optical fiber-based sensors. These kinds of sensors can be fabricated by a modification of the waveguide structures to enhance the evanescent field; therefore, direct interactions of the measurand with electromagnetic waves can be performed. In this research, the most recent applications of photonics components are studied and discussed.

LP01-LP11a mode converters based on long-period fiber gratings in a two-mode polarization-maintaining photonic crystal fiber

A long-period fiber grating (LPFG) mode converter based on a two-mode polarization-maintaining photonic crystal fiber (PM-PCF) is proposed and demonstrated. The mode converters realize conversions between the LP₀₁ modes and LP_11a modes with parallel polarization directions. Different from typical conventional mode converters, the PM-PCF-LPFG mode converters most notably can separate out two linearly polarized LP_11a modes at different wavelengths. The highest mode-conversion efficiency is more than 99%. In addition, the bandwidth of the mode converter is adjustable by changing the grating number of the LPFG.

Mode converters based on cascaded long-period waveguide gratings

We propose a mode-conversion platform based on cascaded long-period waveguide gratings. We demonstrate two specific devices by cascading a surface-corrugated grating and a sidewall-corrugated grating. One device allows conversion among the LP₀₁, LP_11b, and LP_11a modes in a cyclic manner. The maximum conversion efficiency of a typical experimental device fabricated with polymer materials is about 94% at 1540 nm. The other device allows conversion between the LP₀₁ and LP_21a modes. The maximum conversion efficiency of a typical experimental device is estimated to be higher than 90% at 1550 nm. The performance of both devices is polarization-insensitive. The proposed platform could be developed into various mode converters for mode-division-multiplexing systems and other mode-sensitive applications.
