Beam deflection measurement of bound-electronic and rotational nonlinear refraction in molecular gases

Density functional theory study of the structure, stability, magnetic properties, and (hyper)polarizability of (sub-nm) rare-earth (RE) doped gold clusters: Au5RE with RE = Sc, Y, La-Lu

Rare-earth doped materials are of immense interest for their potential applications in linear and nonlinear photonics. There is also intense interest in sub-nanometer gold clusters due to their enhanced stability and unique optical, magnetic, and catalytic properties. To leverage their emergent properties, here we report a systematic study of the geometries, stability, electronic, magnetic, and linear and nonlinear optical properties of Au5RE (RE = Sc, Y, La-Lu) clusters using density-functional theory. Several low-energy isomers consisting of planar or non-planar configurations are identified. For most doped clusters, the non-planar configuration is energetically favored. In the case of La-, Pm-, Gd-, and Ho-doped clusters, a competition between planar and non-planar isomers is predicted. A distinct preference for the planar configuration is predicted for Au5Eu, Au5Sm, Au5Tb, Au5Tm, and Au5Yb. The distinction between the planar and non-planar configurations is highlighted by the calculated highest frequencies, with the stretching mode of the non-planar configuration predicted to be stiffer than the planar configuration. The bonding analysis reveals the dominance of the RE-d orbitals in the formation of frontier molecular orbitals, which, in turn, facilitates retaining the magnetic characteristics governed by RE-f orbitals, preventing spin-quenching of rare earths in the doped clusters. In addition, the doped clusters exhibit small energy gaps between frontier orbitals, large dipole moments, and enhanced hyperpolarizability compared to the host cluster.

Electric field measurement of femtosecond time-resolved four-wave mixing signals in molecules

We report an experiment to measure the femtosecond electric field of the signal emitted from an optical third-order nonlinear interaction in carbon dioxide molecules. Using degenerate four-wave mixing with femtosecond near infrared laser pulses in combination with the ultra-weak femtosecond pulse measurement technique of TADPOLE, we measure the nonlinear signal electric field in the time domain at different time delays between the interacting pulses. The chirp extracted from the temporal phase of the emitted nonlinear signal is found to sensitively depend on the electronic and rotational contributions to the nonlinear response. While the rotational contribution results in a nonlinear signal chirp close to the chirp of the input pulses, the electronic contribution results in a significantly higher chirp which changes with time delay. Our work demonstrates that electric field-resolved nonlinear spectroscopy offers detailed information on nonlinear interactions at ultrafast time scales.

Transient mid-IR nonlinear refraction in air

We use the polarization-sensitive, time-resolved Beam-Deflection technique to measure the nonlinear refraction of air, exciting in both the near and mid-IR and probing in the mid-IR. This gives us the first measurements for air using both excitation and probe in the mid-IR, and we find no dispersion of the bound-electronic nonlinear refractive index, n_2,el(λ_p;λ_e), assuming, as has been shown earlier, that the nuclear rotational nonlinear refraction is nearly dispersionless. From these data, we can model the pulsewidth dependence of the effective nonlinear refractive index, n_2,eff, i.e., as would be measured by a single beam. Interestingly, n_2,eff is maximized for a pulsewidth of approximately 0.5 ps. The position of this maximum is nearly independent of pressure while its magnitude decreases with increasing pressure and temperature. From the measurements and modeling, we predict the nonlinear refraction in the atmosphere at different altitudes.

Dispersion of nondegenerate nonlinear refraction in semiconductors

We use our recently developed beam-deflection technique to measure the dispersion of the nondegenerate nonlinear refraction (NLR) of direct-gap semiconductors. The magnitude and sign of the NLR coefficient n₂(ωa; ωb) are determined over a broad spectral range for different values of nondegeneracy. In the extremely nondegenerate case, n₂(ωa; ωb) is positively enhanced near the two-photon absorption (2PA) edge and is significantly larger than its degenerate counterpart, suggesting applications for nondegenerate all-optical switching. At higher photon energies within the 2PA regime, n₂(ωa; ωb) switches sign to negative over a narrow wavelength range. This strong anomalous nonlinear dispersion provides large phase modulation of a femtosecond pulse with bandwidth centered near the zero-crossing frequency. The measured nondegenerate dispersion closely follows our earlier predictions based on nonlinear Kramers-Kronig relations [Sheik-Bahae et. al, IEEE J. Quant. Electron. 30, 249 (1994)].

Measurement of the nonlinear refractive index of air constituents at mid-infrared wavelengths

We measure the nonlinear refractive index coefficients in N₂, O₂, and Ar from visible through mid-infrared wavelengths (λ=0.4-2.4  μm). The wavelengths investigated correspond to transparency windows in the atmosphere. Good agreement is found with theoretical models of χ((3)). Our results are essential for accurately simulating the propagation of ultrashort mid-infrared pulses in the atmosphere.
