Graphene-deposited photonic crystal fibers for continuous refractive index sensing applications

Numerical Analysis of Highly Sensitive Twin-Core, Gold-Coated, D-Shaped Photonic Crystal Fiber Based on Surface Plasmon Resonance Sensor

This research article proposes and numerically investigates a photonic crystal fiber (PCF) based on a surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor for the detecting refractive index (RI) of unknown analytes. The plasmonic material (gold) layer is placed outside of the PCF by removing two air holes from the main structure, and a D-shaped PCF-SPR sensor is formed. The purpose of using a plasmonic material (gold) layer in a PCF structure is to introduce an SPR phenomenon. The structure of the PCF is likely enclosed by the analyte to be detected, and an external sensing system is used to measure changes in the SPR signal. Moreover, a perfectly matched layer (PML) is also placed outside of the PCF to absorb unwanted light signals towards the surface. The numerical investigation of all guiding properties of the PCF-SPR sensor is completed using a fully vectorial-based finite element method (FEM) to achieve the finest sensing performance. The design of the PCF-SPR sensor is completed using COMSOL Multiphysics software, version 1.4.50. According to the simulation results, the proposed PCF-SPR sensor has a maximum wavelength sensitivity of 9000 nm/RIU, an amplitude sensitivity of 3746 RIU^-1, a sensor resolution of 1 × 10^-5 RIU, and a figure of merit (FOM) of 900 RIU^-1 in the x-polarized direction light signal. The miniaturized structure and high sensitivity of the proposed PCF-SPR sensor make it a promising candidate for detecting RI of analytes ranging from 1.28 to 1.42.

Design and modeling of a graphene-based composite structure optical pressure sensor

In this paper, a novel graphene-based composite structure optical pressure sensor is designed and built with the aid of modeling. A PDMS force-sensitive structural mechanics model is established to optimize the size of the pyramid array distributed on the PDMS layer so that to support high levels of sensitivity and stability. Meanwhile, a graphene waveguide optical model is established to obtain the optimized interference length (L), arm spacing (H) and core width (W), with the objectives of advanced sensitivity, low propagation loss, high resolution. The experimental results show that the pressure sensitivity of the proposed sensor is 17.86 nm/kPa and the maximum pressure that can be detected is 3.40 kPa, which is consistent with the theoretical analysis and verifies the feasibility of the design, also the modeling methods of the graphene-based composite structure optical pressure sensor.

Highly Modulated In-Fiber Mach-Zehnder Interferometer Based on an Ultracompact Leaky-Guided Liquid Core

We proposed a novel sensor based on an ultracompact leaky-guided liquid core fiber Mach-Zehnder interferometer (LLCFMZI) for high modulation of an interference spectrum. The sensor structure is based on a micro-sized hollow-core fiber (HCF) splicing a tilt end face single-mode fiber (SMF) to create a miniature oblique gap for the effective access of different liquids. The liquid core with a relatively lower refractive index (RI) than the cladding can achieve a leaky-mode optical waveguide (LMOW) mechanism, and its volume is only approximately 7.85 pL. In addition, the utilized micro-length HCF can reduce the energy loss of core in the LMOW to obtain an acceptable extinction ratio (>30 dB) with high temperature (T) sensitivity in the interference spectra. Experimental results show that the interference spectra can be highly modulated within the wide measurement range of 1250-1650 nm with a steadily linear response for thermal effect. The measured temperature sensitivities (T-sensitivities) of various liquids of DI water, ethanol, and Cargille-liquid (n_D = 1.305) are 0.8869, 4.4754, and 4.8229 nm/°C, and the corresponding measured thermal optics coefficient (TOC) are -4.16 × 10^-5, -2.11 × 10^-4, and -3.6 × 10^-4 °C^-1, respectively. Measurement results demonstrate that the used liquids with a higher TOC can obtain better T-sensitivity modulation. The highest experimental sensitivity of the liquid-core filled with Cargille-liquid (n_D = 1.40) is up to +13.87 nm/°C with a corresponding TOC of -4.07 × 10^-4 °C^-1. Furthermore, the experimental and theoretical values are in good agreement according to FSR the measuring scheme that investigates the effectiveness of the proposed LLCFMZI.

Intensity-Modulated Polymer Optical Fiber-Based Refractive Index Sensor: A Review

The simple and highly sensitive measurement of the refractive index (RI) of liquids is critical for designing the optical instruments and important in biochemical sensing applications. Intensity modulation-based polymer optical fiber (POF) RI sensors have a lot of advantages including low cost, easy fabrication and operation, good flexibility, and working in the visible wavelength. In this review, recent developments of the intensity modulation POF-based RI sensors are summarized. The materials of the POF and the working principle of intensity modulation are introduced briefly. Moreover, the RI sensing performance of POF sensors with different structures including tapered, bent, and side-polished structures, among others, are presented in detail. Finally, the sensing performance for different structures of POF-based RI sensors are compared and discussed.

Monitoring heterogeneity in therapeutic samples using Schlieren

Antigen, antibodies, and other therapeutic biomolecule solutions are likely to undergo physical and chemical processes during their development, manufacturing, transport, and storage. This can induce internal stresses in the sample, resulting in aggregation, heterogeneities, and an overall reduction in the sample quality, e.g., freeze-thawing of samples for storage. Monitoring mixing is thus crucial to ensure homogeneity and consistency while further optimizing downstream processes. We present a simple and portable all-lens Schlieren setup to detect, visualize, and quantify heterogeneities in the protein/antigen or other pharmaceutical solutions during and after thawing in real-time. We illustrate the capabilities of the proposed method by visualizing and quantifying heterogeneities during the thawing of BSA and IgG in four different formulation buffers. The local concentration gradients in a thawing sample lead to light intensity variations which are captured using the Schlieren technique. The sample heterogeneity can then be quantified by relating these light intensity variations to concentration gradients. To this end, we first measure the refractive index of the sample solutions, which varies linearly with the sample concentration. This linear relation is then used to extract the concentration gradient field from the light intensity data. We establish the validity of the proposed approach by demonstrating its accuracy in measuring the diffusion coefficient of a diffusing interface. The portability of the setup and its applicability to a wide range of pharmaceutical solutions make this Schlieren-based technique suitable for monitoring the mixing, heterogeneity, and stability of pharmaceutical samples.

Birefringent Bragg Grating in C-Shaped Optical Fiber as a Temperature-Insensitive Refractometer

We demonstrate a simple-to-fabricate refractometer based on the inscription of fiber Bragg gratings in a special C-shaped optical fiber. The C-shaped fiber was drawn into shape using a quarter cladding removed preform of a commercial standard single-mode fiber by simple machining. The sensor did not suffer from cross-sensitivity of the refractive index with ambient temperature fluctuations, commonly occurring with many optical fiber refractometers. A refractive index sensitivity of 1300 pm per refractive index unit (RIU) was achieved without employing any additional sensitization techniques such as tapering or etching.

Optical Fibre Sensors Using Graphene-Based Materials: A Review

Graphene and its derivatives have become the most explored materials since Novoselov and Geim (Nobel Prize winners for Physics in 2010) achieved its isolation in 2004. The exceptional properties of graphene have attracted the attention of the scientific community from different research fields, generating high impact not only in scientific journals, but also in general-interest newspapers. Optical fibre sensing is one of the many fields that can benefit from the use of these new materials, combining the amazing morphological, chemical, optical and electrical features of graphene with the advantages that optical fibre offers over other sensing strategies. In this document, a review of the current state of the art for optical fibre sensors based on graphene materials is presented.
