High-average-power, 50-fs parametric amplifier front-end at 1.55 μm

Cr:ZnS-based soliton self-frequency shifted signal generation for a tunable sub-100 fs MWIR OPCPA

We present a tunable, high-energy optical parametric chirped pulse amplification system with a front-end based on a femtosecond Cr:ZnS laser. By taking advantage of the broad emission spectrum of the femtosecond Cr:ZnS master oscillator, we are able to directly seed the holmium-based pump around 2 µm. At the same time, the signal pulses for the parametric process are generated via Raman self-frequency shifting of the red end of the spectrum centered at 2.4 µm. The solitons, generated in a fluoride fiber, are tunable over the wavelength range between 2.8 and 3.2 µm. The optical parametric amplifier operates at a 1 kHz repetition rate, and consists of two stages equipped with ZGP as nonlinear crystal. The generated idler pulses are tunable between 5.4 and 6.8 µm with a pulse energy of up to 400 µJ. Dispersion management using bulk material stretching and compression in combination with precise phase shaping prior to amplification enables idler pulses of a sub-100 fs duration, translating into a peak power as high as 4 GW.

Compact OPCPA system seeded by a Cr:ZnS laser for generating tunable femtosecond pulses in the MWIR

A compact mid-wavelength infrared (MWIR) optical parametric chirped pulse amplification (OPCPA) system generates sub-150 fs pulses at wavelengths from 5.4 to 6.8 µm with >400µJ energy at a 1 kHz repetition rate. A femtosecond Cr:ZnS master oscillator emitting 40 fs pulses at 2.4 µm seeds both a Ho:YLF regenerative amplifier and a two-stage OPCPA based on ZnGeP₂ crystals. The 2.05 µm few-picosecond pump pulses from the Ho:YLF amplifier have an energy of 13.4 mJ. Seed pulses for the OPCPA are generated by soliton self-frequency shifting in a fluoride fiber and are tunable between 2.8 and 3.25 µm with a sub-100 fs duration and few-nanojoule energy. The intense MWIR pulses hold strong potential for applications in ultrafast mid-infrared nonlinear optics and spectroscopy.

Self-compression in a multipass cell

We demonstrate self-compression of short-wavelength infrared pulses in a multipass cell (MPC) containing a plate of silica. Nonlinear propagation in the cell in the anomalous dispersion regime results in the generation of 14 μJ 22 fs pulses at 125 kHz repetition rate and 1550 nm wavelength. Periodic focusing inside the cell allows us to circumvent catastrophic self-focusing, despite an output peak power of 440 MW well beyond the critical power in silica of 10 MW. This technique allows straightforward energy scaling of self-compression setups and control over the spatial manifestation of Kerr nonlinearity. More generally, MPCs can be used to perform, at higher energy levels, temporal manipulations of pulses that have been previously demonstrated in waveguides.

43 W, 1.55 μm and 12.5 W, 3.1 μm dual-beam, sub-10 cycle, 100 kHz optical parametric chirped pulse amplifier

We present a 100 kHz optical parametric chirped pulse amplifier (OPCPA) developed for strong-field attosecond physics and soft-x-ray transient absorption experiments. The system relies on noncollinear potassium titanyl arsenate booster OPCPAs and is pumped by a 244 W, 1.1 ps Yb:YAG Innoslab chirped pulse laser amplifier. Two optically synchronized infrared output beams are simultaneously available: a 430 μJ, 51 fs, carrier-envelope phase stable beam at 1.55 μm and an angular-dispersion-compensated, 125 μJ, 73 fs beam at 3.1 μm.

Highly stable, 15 W, few-cycle, 65 mrad CEP-noise mid-IR OPCPA for statistical physics

We demonstrate a 100 kHz optical parametric chirped-pulse amplifier delivering under 4-cycle (38 fs) pulses at ~3.2 µm with an average power of 15.2 W with a pulse-to-pulse energy stability <0.7% rms and a single-shot CEP noise of 65 mrad RMS over 8h. This source is continuously monitored, by using a fast 100 kHz data acquisition device, and presents an extreme stability, in the short and long terms.

100-kHz, dual-beam OPA delivering high-quality, 5-cycle angular-dispersion-compensated mid-infrared idler pulses at 3.1 µm

We demonstrate a dual-beam infrared optical parametric source featuring a noncollinear KTA booster amplifier and straightforward angular dispersion compensation of the idler beam. Through careful beam and pulse characterization, and high-harmonic generation in a crystalline solid, we show that the corrected idler beam is diffraction-limited, astigmatism-free, and compressible to its transform-limited, 5-cycle pulse duration. Pumped by only 40-µJ pulses at 1.03 µm, the parametric source delivers 7.8-µJ, 38-fs, 1.53-µm and 2.3-µJ, 53-fs, CEP-stable, 3.1-µm pulses at a repetition rate of 100 kHz. The scheme provides a promising route to scale the pulse energy and average power beyond PPLN- or KTA-based collinear OPA architectures.

Continuous every-single-shot carrier-envelope phase measurement and control at 100 kHz

With the emergence of high-repetition-rate few-cycle laser pulse amplifiers aimed at investigating ultrafast dynamics in atomic, molecular, and solid-state science, the need for ever faster carrier-envelope phase (CEP) detection and control has arisen. Here we demonstrate a high-speed, continuous, every-single-shot measurement and fast feedback scheme based on a stereo above-threshold ionization time-of-flight spectrometer capable of detecting the CEP and pulse duration at a repetition rate of up to 400 kHz. This scheme is applied to a 100 kHz optical parametric chirped pulse amplification few-cycle laser system, demonstrating improved CEP stabilization and allowing for CEP tagging.

100 kHz Yb-fiber laser pumped 3 μm optical parametric amplifier for probing solid-state systems in the strong field regime

We report on a laser source operating at 100 kHz repetition rate and delivering 8 μJ few-cycle mid-IR pulses at 3 μm. The system is based on optical parametric amplification pumped by a high repetition rate Yb-doped femtosecond fiber-chirped amplifier. This high-intensity ultrafast system is a promising tool for strong-field experiments (up to 50 GV/m and 186 T) in low ionization potential atomic and molecular systems, or solid-state physics with coincidence measurements. As a proof of principle, up to the sixth harmonic has been generated in a 1 mm zinc selenide sample.

Numerical study of spatiotemporal distortions in noncollinear optical parametric chirped-pulse amplifiers

During amplification in a noncollinear optical parametric amplifier the spatial and temporal coordinates of the amplified field are inherently coupled. These couplings or distortions can limit the peak intensity, among other things. In this work, a numerical study of the spatiotemporal distortions in BBO-based noncollinear optical parametric chirped-pulse amplifiers (NOPCPAs) is presented for a wide range of parameters and for different amplification conditions. It is shown that for Gaussian pump beams, gain saturation introduces strong distortions and high conversion efficiency always comes at the price of strong spatiotemporal couplings which drastically reduce the peak intensity even when pulse fronts of the pump and the signal are matched. However, high conversion efficiencies with minimum spatiotemporal distortions can still be achieved with flat-top pump beam profiles.

4-W, 100-kHz, few-cycle mid-infrared source with sub-100-mrad carrier-envelope phase noise

We demonstrate an optical parametric chirped-pulse amplifier delivering 4-cycles (38-fs) pulses centered around 3.1 µm at 100-kHz repetition rate with an average power of 4 W and an undersampled single-shot carrier-envelope phase noise of 81 mrad recorded over 25 min. The amplifier is pumped by a ~1.1 ps, Yb-YAG, thin-disk regenerative amplifier and seeded with a supercontinuum generated in bulk YAG from the same pump pulses. Carrier-envelope phase stability is passively achieved through difference-frequency generation between pump and seed pulses. An additional active stabilization at 10 kHz combining 2f-to-f interferometry and a LiNbO₃ acousto-optic programmable dispersive filter achieves a record low phase noise.

Supercontinuum-seeded few-cycle mid-infrared OPCPA system

We propose and demonstrate an OPCPA architecture emitting few-cycle pulses at 3070 nm and 1550 nm based on a high-energy femtosecond ytterbium-doped fiber amplifier pump. The short pump pulse duration allows direct seeding by a supercontinuum in the 1.4 - 1.7 µm signal range, generated in bulk YAG. It also allows a simplified dispersion management along the system and broad optical gain bandwidth. The dual output system delivers 20 µJ, 49 fs signal pulses at 1550 nm and 10 µJ, 72 fs idler pulses at 3070 nm. Power scaling limitations due to beam distortion in the last MgO:PPLN-based OPCPA stage are discussed and investigated.

Close to transform-limited, few-cycle 12 µJ pulses at 400 kHz for applications in ultrafast spectroscopy

Non-collinear optical parametric amplification has become the leading technology for amplifying few-cycle carrier-envelope phase (CEP) stable pulses to high energy at extreme repetition rates. In this work, a parametric amplifier system devoted to ultrafast photoionization experiments with coincidence detection is reported. The amplifier delivers CEP-stable few-cycle pulses with an average power of 5 W, and operates at repetition rates between 400 and 800 kHz. Close to transform-limited compression of the few-cycle pulses is achieved with minimized spatio-temporal distortions. Potential limitations introduced by spatio-temporal couplings to applications in attosecond science are analyzed. In particular, it is shown that pulse front tilt resulting from non-collinear amplification can considerably reduce the asymmetry in stereo above threshold ionization (stereo-ATI) experiments.

Focus issue introduction: Advanced Solid-State Lasers (ASSL) 2015

The editors introduce the focus issue on "Advanced Solid-State Lasers (ASSL) 2015", which is based on the topics presented at a congress of the same name held in Berlin, Germany, from October 4 to October 9, 2015. This focus issue, jointly prepared by Optics Express and Optical Materials Express, includes 23 contributed papers (17 for Optics Express and 6 for Optical Materials Express) selected from the voluntary submissions from attendees who presented at the congress and have extended their work into complete research articles. We hope this focus issue offers a good snapshot of a variety of topical discussions held at the congress and will contribute to the further expansion of the associated research areas.
