Controlling the nonlinear optical properties of plasmonic nanoparticles with the phase of their linear response

Tunable Switching between Slow and Fast Light in the Graphene Nanodisks (GND)-Quantum Dot (QD) Plasmonic Hybrid Systems

Plasmonic nanocomposites demonstrate unique properties due to the plasmonic effects, especially those with graphene within their structures, thereby paving the way to various promising applications. In this paper, we investigate the linear properties of the graphene-nanodisks--quantum-dots hybrid plasmonic systems in the near-infrared region of the electromagnetic spectrum by numerically solving the linear susceptibility of the weak probe field at a steady state. Utilising the density matrix method under the weak probe field approximation, we derive the equations of motion for the density matrix elements using the dipole--dipole-interaction Hamiltonian under the rotating wave approximation, where the quantum dot is modelled as a three-level atomic system of Λ configuration interacting with two externally applied fields, a probe field, and a robust control field. We find that the linear response of our hybrid plasmonic system exhibits an electromagnetically induced transparency window and switching between absorption and amplification without population inversion in the vicinity of the resonance, which can be controlled by adjusting the parameters of the external fields and the system's setup. The probe field and the distance-adjustable major axis of the system must be aligned with the direction of the resonance energy of the hybrid system. Moreover, our plasmonic hybrid system offers tunable switching between slow and fast light near the resonance. Therefore, the linear properties obtained by the hybrid plasmonic system can be employed in applications such as communication, biosensing, plasmonic sensors, signal processing, optoelectronics, and photonic devices.

Electric dipole-quadrupole hybridization induced enhancement of second-harmonic generation in T-shaped plasmonic heterodimers

In this work, we demonstrate computationally that electric dipole-quadrupole hybridization (EDQH) could be utilized to enhance plasmonic SHG efficiency. To this end, we construct T-shaped plasmonic heterodimers consisting of a short and a long gold nanorod with finite element method simulation. By controlling the strength of capacitive coupling between two gold nanorods, we explore the effect of EDQH evolution on the SHG process, including the SHG efficiency enhancement, corresponding near-field distribution, and far-field radiation pattern. Simulation results demonstrate that EDQH could enhance the SHG efficiency by a factor >100 in comparison with that achieved by an isolated gold nanorod. Additionally, the far-field pattern of the SHG could be adjusted beyond the well-known quadrupolar distribution and confirms that EDQH plays an important role in the SHG process.

Shape and size dependent nonlinear refraction and absorption in citrate-stabilized, near-IR plasmonic silver nanopyramids

Using a combination of a mild stabilizer and a mild reductant, sodium citrate and hydrazine hydrate, anisotropic silver nanocrystals (NCs) were synthesized with tunable plasmon peaks at 550 nm, 700 nm, 800 nm, 900 nm and 1010 nm (the samples are named Ag-550, Ag-700, Ag-800, Ag-900 and Ag-1010, respectively). TEM investigations revealed that Ag-550 NCs were pentagonal nanoplates while the other four samples were nanopyramids with a pentagonal base with the edge length varying between 15 and 30 nm. The non-linear optical (NLO) properties of these NCs were studied by the Z-scan technique using the CW He-Ne laser (632.8 nm, 15 mW). The shape change from 2D nanoplates (Ag-550) to 3D nanopyramids (Ag-700) resulted in sign reversal of the non-linear refractive index, n₂, from a negative (-3.164 × 10^-8 cm² W^-1) to a positive one (1.195 × 10^-8 cm² W^-1). This corresponds to a change from a self-defocussing effect to a self-focussing one. Besides shape, the size effect is also prominently observed. Amongst nanopyramids, as the edge length increases, n₂ increases linearly and reaches a maximum of 3.124 × 10^-8 cm² W^-1. Doubling the edge length from 15 nm to 30 nm resulted in 162% increase in n₂. On moving from Ag-550 to Ag-900 NCs, with the increasing plasmon wavelength, the non-linear absorption (NLA) coefficient increased exponentially to a high value of 8.52 × 10^-4 cm W^-1. However, Ag-1010 showed 29% decrease in NLA which is attributed to twinning present in the crystal structure as seen in the HR-TEM images. Due to the tunable NLO properties, these anisotropic Ag NCs hold great potential for applications in optical limiting, switching and data storage.

Anticrossing double Fano resonances generated in metallic/dielectric hybrid nanostructures using nonradiative anapole modes for enhanced nonlinear optical effects

Third-harmonic generation with metallic or dielectric nanoparticles often suffer from, respectively, small modal volumes and weak near-field enhancements. This study propose and demonstrate that a metallic/dielectric hybrid nanostructure composed of a silver double rectangular nanoring and a silicon square nanoplate can be used to overcome these obstacles for enhanced third-harmonic generation. It is shown that the nonradiative anapole mode of the Si plate can be used as a localized source to excite the dark subradiant octupole mode of the Ag ring, and the mode hybridization leads to the formation of an antibonding and a bonding subradiant collective mode, thereby forming anticrossing double Fano resonances. With the strong coupling between individual particles and the effectively suppressed radiative losses of the Fano resonances, several strong hot spots are generated around the Ag ring due to the excitation of the octupole mode, and electromagnetic fields within the Si plate are also strongly amplified, making it possible to confine more incident energy inside the dielectric nanoparticle. Calculation results reveal that the confined energy inside the Si plate and the Ag ring for the hybrid structures can be about, respectively, more than three times and four orders stronger than that of the corresponding isolated nanoparticles, which makes the designed hybrid nanostructure a promising platform for enhanced third-harmonic generation.
