Optical pulling and pushing forces exerted on silicon nanospheres with strong coherent interaction between electric and magnetic resonances

Optical Force Effects of Rayleigh Particles by Cylindrical Vector Beams

High-order cylindrical vector beams possess flexible spatial polarization and exhibit new effects and phenomena that can expand the functionality and enhance the capability of optical systems. However, building a general analytical model for highly focused beams with different polarization orders remains a challenge. Here, we elaborately develop the vector theory of high-order cylindrical vector beams in a high numerical aperture focusing system and achieve the vectorial diffraction integrals for describing the tight focusing field with the space-variant distribution of polarization orders within the framework of Richards-Wolf diffraction theory. The analytical formulae include the exact three Cartesian components of electric and magnetic distributions in the tightly focused region. Additionally, utilizing the analytical formulae, we can achieve the gradient force, scattering force, and curl-spin force exerted on Rayleigh particles trapped by high-order cylindrical vector beams. These results are crucial for improving the design and engineering of the tightly focused field by modulating the polarization orders of high-order cylindrical vector beams, particularly for applications such as optical tweezers and optical manipulation. This theoretical analysis also extends to the calculation of complicated optical vortex vector fields and the design of diffractive optical elements with high diffraction efficiency and resolution.

Tunable optical pulling force mediated by resonant electromagnetic coupling

In terms of the law of momentum conservation, the optical pulling force (OPF) is a counterintuitive phenomenon for optical manipulation. We investigate analytically and numerically the tunable OPF exerted on the low refractive index nanoparticle (NP) in a hybrid dimer system when it is illuminated by a plane wave based on the coupled dipole approximation method and the finite-difference time-domain method, respectively. The underlying physical mechanism relies on the near-field electromagnetic coupling between the low refractive index dielectric NP and the plasmonic NP. We further evaluate the dependence of the OPF on the geometrical parameters of the system. It is also numerically demonstrated that a Gaussian beam can be used to achieve pure OPF with no transverse force component. The proposed OPF offers an additional degree of freedom for optical sorting, transport, and trapping of NPs.

Investigation of optical force on magnetic nanoparticles with magnetic-fluid-filled Fabry-Perot interferometer

The optical force acting on the magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) is investigated with the magnetic-fluid-filled fiber-optic Fabry-Perot interferometer. The shift of interference spectra is related with the local refractive index variation in the light path, which is assigned to the optical-force-induced outward movement of MNPs. The influence of magnetic fluid’s viscosity, ambient temperature, strength and orientation of the externally applied magnetic field on the optical-force-induced MNPs’ movement is studied in details. The results of this work provide a further understanding of interaction between light and MNPs and clarify the dynamic micro-processes of MNPs within magnetic fluid under external stimuli. It may have the potentials in the fields of light-controllable magnetic-fluid-based devices and vector magnetic field detection.

Generalized Kerker effects in nanophotonics and meta-optics [Invited]

The original Kerker effect was introduced for a hypothetical magnetic sphere, and initially it did not attract much attention due to a lack of magnetic materials required. Rejuvenated by the recent explosive development of the field of metamaterials and especially its core concept of optically-induced artificial magnetism, the Kerker effect has gained an unprecedented impetus and rapidly pervaded different branches of nanophotonics. At the same time, the concept behind the effect itself has also been significantly expanded and generalized. Here we review the physics and various manifestations of the generalized Kerker effects, including the progress in the emerging field of meta-optics that focuses on interferences of electromagnetic multipoles of different orders and origins. We discuss not only the scattering by individual particles and particle clusters, but also the manipulation of reflection, transmission, diffraction, and absorption for metalattices and metasurfaces, revealing how various optical phenomena observed recently are all ubiquitously related to the Kerker's concept.

Tailoring optical pulling force on gain coated nanoparticles with nonlocal effective medium theory

We study the optical scattering force on the coated nanoparticles with gain core and nonlocal plasmonic shell in the long-wavelength limit, and demonstrate negative optical force acting on the nanoparticles near the symmetric and/or antisymmetric surface plasmon resonances. To understand the optical force behavior, we propose nonlocal effective medium theory to derive the equivalent permittivity for the coated nanoparticles with nonlocality. We show that the imaginary part of the equivalent permittivity is negative near the surface resonant wavelength, resulting in the negative optical force. The introduction of nonlocality may shift the resonant wavelength of the optical force, and strengthen the negative optical force. Two examples of Fano-like resonant scattering in such coated nanoparticles are considered, and Fano resonance-induced negative optical force is found too. Our findings could have some potential applications in plasmonics, nano-optical manipulation, and optical selection.
