Approaching the diffraction-limited, bandwidth-limited Petawatt

Spatio-temporal characterization of tightly focused femtosecond laser fields formed by paraboloidal mirrors with different F-numbers

The focusing spatiotemporal property of a femtosecond laser pulse is presented under tight focusing conditions by using the frequency-resolved incident electric field and vector diffraction formulas with the wavefront correction term. In the ideal case, the focused laser intensity reaches its maximum at the F-number of ∼0.35 due to the strong diffraction effect under extremely tight focusing conditions. In spatio-temporal coupling distortion cases, their spatiotemporal Strehl ratios show a trend of improvement as the F-number decreases and this phenomenon is mainly concentrated along the y-direction. Based on the numerical calculation method used in this work, the precise information of tightly focused ultra-intense femtosecond laser fields can be obtained, which is crucial for assessing a focused intensity and describing the motion of charged particles under an extremely strong electric field. Moreover, the evolution law of focal fields with spatiotemporal distortions found in this paper can offer some theoretical guidance for realizing ultrahigh laser intensity in the near future.

Optimum design of double-layer target for proton acceleration by ultrahigh intense femtosecond lasers considering relativistic rising edge

Advances in laser technology have led to ever-increasing laser intensities. As a result, in addition to the amplified spontaneous emission and pedestal, it has become necessary to accurately treat the relativistic rising edge component. This component has not needed much consideration in the past because of its not relativistic intensity. In the previous study, a thin contamination layer was blown away from the target by the rear sheath field due to the relativistic rising edge component, and the target bulk was accelerated by the sheath field due to the main pulse. These indicated that the proton acceleration is not efficient in the target normal sheath acceleration by the ultrahigh intense femtosecond laser if the proton-containing layer is as thin as the contamination layer. Here we employ a double-layer target, making the second (rear) layer thick enough not to be blown away by the rising edge, so that the second layer is accelerated by the main pulse. The first layer is composed of heavy ions to reduce the total thickness of the target for efficient proton acceleration. We investigate an optimal design of a double-layer target for proton acceleration by the ultrahigh intense femtosecond laser considering the relativistic rising edge using two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations. We also discuss how to optimize the design of such a double-layer target and find that it can be designed with two conditions: the first layer is not penetrated by hole boring, and the second layer is not blown away by the rising edge.

Enhanced ion acceleration from transparency-driven foils demonstrated at two ultraintense laser facilities

Laser-driven ion sources are a rapidly developing technology producing high energy, high peak current beams. Their suitability for applications, such as compact medical accelerators, motivates development of robust acceleration schemes using widely available repetitive ultraintense femtosecond lasers. These applications not only require high beam energy, but also place demanding requirements on the source stability and controllability. This can be seriously affected by the laser temporal contrast, precluding the replication of ion acceleration performance on independent laser systems with otherwise similar parameters. Here, we present the experimental generation of >60 MeV protons and >30 MeV u^-1 carbon ions from sub-micrometre thickness Formvar foils irradiated with laser intensities >10²¹ Wcm². Ions are accelerated by an extreme localised space charge field ≳30 TVm^-1, over a million times higher than used in conventional accelerators. The field is formed by a rapid expulsion of electrons from the target bulk due to relativistically induced transparency, in which relativistic corrections to the refractive index enables laser transmission through normally opaque plasma. We replicate the mechanism on two different laser facilities and show that the optimum target thickness decreases with improved laser contrast due to reduced pre-expansion. Our demonstration that energetic ions can be accelerated by this mechanism at different contrast levels relaxes laser requirements and indicates interaction parameters for realising application-specific beam delivery.

Accelerating Ions by Crossing Two Ultraintense Lasers in a Near-Critical Relativistically Transparent Plasma

A new scheme of ion acceleration by crossing two ultraintense laser pulses in a near-critical relativistically transparent plasma is proposed. One laser, acting as a trigger, preaccelerates background ions in its radial direction via the laser-driven shock. Another crossed laser drives a comoving snowplow field which traps some of the preaccelerated ions and then efficiently accelerates them to high energies up to a few giga-electron-volts. The final output ion beam is collimated and quasimonoenergetic due to a momentum-selection mechanism. Particle-in-cell simulations and theoretical analysis show that the scheme is feasible and robust.

Laser-driven multi-MeV high-purity proton acceleration via anisotropic ambipolar expansion of micron-scale hydrogen clusters

Multi-MeV high-purity proton acceleration by using a hydrogen cluster target irradiated with repetitive, relativistic intensity laser pulses has been demonstrated. Statistical analysis of hundreds of data sets highlights the existence of markedly high energy protons produced from the laser-irradiated clusters with micron-scale diameters. The spatial distribution of the accelerated protons is found to be anisotropic, where the higher energy protons are preferentially accelerated along the laser propagation direction due to the relativistic effect. These features are supported by three-dimensional (3D) particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations, which show that directional, higher energy protons are generated via the anisotropic ambipolar expansion of the micron-scale clusters. Reducing temporal pedestal in a Ti:sapphire chirped-pulse amplification system by using a stretcher based on two concave mirrors

We demonstrate the temporal pedestal suppression in a Ti:sapphire chirped-pulse amplification laser system. The far-field spectral phase noise can be avoided by using a stretcher based on two concave mirrors in the system, reducing the intensity and the time range of the amplified pulse's pedestal. At the amplified energy of 1.7 J, the contrast measurement showed that the pedestal intensity was at a level of about 10^-10 within a 10 ps time window near the main pulse. In the proton acceleration experiment, a 10 nm thickness CH target was irradiated by the high-contrast pulse with the focused intensity of ∼1.4×10²⁰W/cm², which generated a proton beam with a cutoff energy of 16 MeV.

Deconvolution of multi-Boltzmann x-ray distribution from linear absorption spectrometer via analytical parameter reduction

Accurate characterization of incident radiation is a fundamental challenge for diagnostic design. Herein, we present an efficient spectral analysis routine that is able to characterize multiple components within the spectral emission by analytically reducing the number of parameters. The technique is presented alongside the design of a hard x-ray linear absorption spectrometer using the example of multiple Boltzmann-like spectral distributions; however, it is generally applicable to all absorption based spectrometer designs and can be adapted to any incident spectral shape. This routine is demonstrated to be tolerable to experimental noise and suitable for real-time data processing at multi-Hz repetition rates.

Discriminative detection of laser-accelerated multi-MeV carbon ions utilizing solid state nuclear track detectors

A new diagnosis method for the discriminative detection of laser-accelerated multi-MeV carbon ions from background oxygen ions utilizing solid-state nuclear track detectors (SSNTDs) is proposed. The idea is to combine two kinds of SSNTDs having different track registration sensitivities: Bisphenol A polycarbonate detects carbon and the heavier ions, and polyethylene terephthalate detects oxygen and the heavier ions. The method is calibrated with mono-energetic carbon and oxygen ion beams from the heavy ion accelerator. Based on the calibration data, the method is applied to identify carbon ions accelerated from multilayered graphene targets irradiated by a high-power laser, where the generation of high-energy high-purity carbon ions is expected. It is found that 93 ± 1% of the accelerated heavy ions with energies larger than 14 MeV are carbons. The results thus obtained support that carbon-rich heavy ion acceleration is achieved.

Single-shot spatiotemporal characterization of a multi-PW laser using a multispectral wavefront sensing method

The single-shot spatiotemporal characterization of an ultrahigh intensity laser pulse was performed using a multispectral wavefront sensor. For the measurement of the spatio-spectral electric field, a femtosecond laser pulse was spectrally modulated and separated by a Fabry-Perot etalon coupled with a grating pair, and its spatio-spectral electric field was measured with a wavefront sensor. The spatiotemporal electric field was reconstructed from the measured spatio-spectral electric field of a multi-PW laser pulse. We found that the spatiotemporal distortion could reduce the focused laser intensity by 15%, compared to the case of a diffraction-limited and transform-limited laser pulse.

Analysis of angular dispersion induced by wavefront rotation in nanosecond optical parametric chirped pulse amplification

Angular dispersion observed in a nanosecond optical parametric chirped-pulse amplification (ns-OPCPA) amplifier adopted in the frontend of a multi-PW laser was analyzed. The theory on the angular dispersion, extended by including the wavefront rotation and the pulse front tilt of a strongly chirped laser pulse, revealed that the wavefront rotation is a major contributor to the angular dispersion, as compared to the pulse front tilt, in a ns-OPCPA amplifier. It was also shown that the wavefront rotation could be introduced by the phase mismatch and the noncollinear propagation angle in the noncollinear ns-OPCPA amplifier. The theoretical prediction was experimentally verified by measuring the angular dispersion of the ns-OPCPA frontend installed in the 20-fs, 4-PW Ti:Sapphire laser. We emphasize the importance of the proper characterization and control of the angular dispersion in the ns-OPCPA amplifier since the focus intensity of an ultrahigh power laser could be significantly reduced due to the spatiotemporal effect even for small induced angular dispersion.

Directly Measuring the Pulse Front Distortion of High-Peak-Power Femtosecond Lasers

Pulse front distortion occurring in lenses can broaden the temporal profile of the pulse at focus and therefore decrease the focused intensity, especially for large-aperture femtosecond lasers. A previously proposed self-reference cross correlator was improved to directly measure the pulse front distortion of high-peak-power femtosecond lasers. The measured results of a 200 TW/27 fs laser are in good accordance with the calculated value. Moreover, the temporal intensity distribution of the pulse in the focal region was also investigated, in order to better guide and further promote the strong laser-matter interaction investigations. According to the measured PFD, the effective pulse duration at far field of this 200 TW laser was theoretically simulated to be ≈49 fs, which is almost two times the generally regarded 27 fs. As a result, the actually available focused intensity of this laser is only 55% of the case without pulse front distortion.

Petawatt Femtosecond Laser Pulses from Titanium-Doped Sapphire Crystal

Ultra-high intensity femtosecond lasers have now become excellent scientific tools for the study of extreme material states in small-scale laboratory settings. The invention of chirped-pulse amplification (CPA) combined with titanium-doped sapphire (Ti:sapphire) crystals have enabled realization of such lasers. The pursuit of ultra-high intensity science and applications is driving worldwide development of new capabilities. A petawatt (PW = 1015 W), femtosecond (fs = 10−15 s), repetitive (0.1 Hz), high beam quality J-KAREN-P (Japan Kansai Advanced Relativistic ENgineering Petawatt) Ti:sapphire CPA laser has been recently constructed and used for accelerating charged particles (ions and electrons) and generating coherent and incoherent ultra-short-pulse, high-energy photon (X-ray) radiation. Ultra-high intensities of 1022 W/cm2 with high temporal contrast of 10−12 and a minimal number of pre-pulses on target has been demonstrated with the J-KAREN-P laser. Here, worldwide ultra-high intensity laser development is summarized, the output performance and spatiotemporal quality improvement of the J-KAREN-P laser are described, and some experimental results are briefly introduced.

Ion species discrimination method by linear energy transfer measurement in Fujifilm BAS-SR imaging plate

We have developed a novel discrimination methodology to identify ions in multispecies beams with similar charge-to-mass ratios, but different atomic numbers. After an initial separation by charge-to-mass ratios using co-linear electric and magnetic fields, individual ions can be discriminated by considering the linear energy transfer of ions irradiating a stimulable phosphor plate (Fujifilm imaging plate) by comparison with the Monte Carlo calculation. We apply the method to energetic multispecies laser-driven ion beams and use it to identify silver ions produced by the interaction between a high contrast, high intensity laser pulse; and a sub-micrometer silver foil target. We also show that this method can be used to calibrate the imaging plate for arbitrary ion species in the range of Z ≥ 6 with dE/dx > 0.1 MeV/μm without requiring individual calibration.

Enhanced photon emission from a double-layer target at moderate laser intensities

In this paper we study photon emission in the interaction of the laser beam with an under-dense target and the attached reflecting plasma mirror. Photons are emitted due to the inverse Compton scattering when accelerated electrons interact with a reflected part of the laser pulse. The enhancement of photon generation in this configuration lies in using the laser pulse with a steep rising edge. Such a laser pulse can be obtained by the preceding interaction of the incoming laser pulse with a thin solid-density foil. Using numerical simulations we study how such a laser pulse affects photon emission. As a result of employing a laser pulse with a steep rising edge, accelerated electrons can interact directly with the most intense part of the laser pulse that enhances photon emission. This approach increases the number of created photons and improves photon beam divergence.

Can Extreme Electromagnetic Fields Accelerate the α Decay of Nuclei?

The possibility to control the α decay channel of atomic nuclei with electromagnetic fields of extreme intensities envisaged for the near future at multipetawatt and exawatt laser facilities is investigated theoretically. Using both analytic arguments based on the Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin approximation and numerical calculations for the imaginary time method applied in the framework of the α decay precluster model, we show that no experimentally detectable modification of the α decay rate can be observed with super-intense lasers at any so-far-available wavelength. Comparing our predictions with those reported in several recent publications, where a considerable or even giant laser-induced enhancement of the decay rate has been claimed, we identify there the misuse of a standard approximation.

Experimental investigation on the temporal contrast of pre-pulses by post-pulses in a petawatt laser facility

We experimentally explore the generation of pre-pulses by post-pulses, created through internal reflection in the optical components, by the nonlinear process associated with the B-integral in the laser chain of the petawatt (PW) facility J-KAREN-P. At a large time delay between the main and the post-pulses, we have found that the pre-pulses are not generated from their counterpart post-pulses at an identical time difference before the main pulse, and the temporal shapes of the pre-pulses are greatly distorted asymmetrically. We have also observed that the peak intensities of the pre-pulses are drastically suppressed compared to the expected value at a small time delay. We briefly describe the origins of the pre-pulses generated by the post-pulses and demonstrate the removal of the pre-pulses by switching to optical components with a small wedge angle at our PW laser facility.

Effect of Small Focus on Electron Heating and Proton Acceleration in Ultrarelativistic Laser-Solid Interactions

Acceleration of particles from the interaction of ultraintense laser pulses up to 5×10^{21}  W cm^{-2} with thin foils is investigated experimentally. The electron beam parameters varied with decreasing spot size, not just laser intensity, resulting in reduced temperatures and divergence. In particular, the temperature saturated due to insufficient acceleration length in the tightly focused spot. These dependencies affected the sheath-accelerated protons, which showed poorer spot-size scaling than widely used scaling laws. It is therefore shown that maximizing laser intensity by using very small foci has reducing returns for some applications.

Diode-side-pumped joule-level square-rod Nd:glass amplifier with 1 Hz repetition rate and ultrahigh gain

An effective diode-side-pumped joule-level square-rod Nd:glass multipass amplifier with 1 Hz repetition rate is developed. A Pockels cell is used to extend the amplification-pass to twelve-pass. The linear depolarization compensation method and adaptive optics based wavefront aberration correction method are used to minimize the thermal effects. Combined with the relay-imaging technology and beam-shaping method, good beam quality is obtained. Under the small-signal gain of 3.23 and the input energy of 50 µJ, the output energy of 1 J and the net gain of 2×10⁴ are realized. The effective energy-extraction efficiency in the whole aperture of Nd:glass rod is 12%. The total wavefront aberration is 1.1 µm (peak valley). The Strehl Ratio is 0.62, and 90% of far-field energy is concentrated in 3 times the diffraction limit. The near-field modulation index of twelve-pass amplification at 1 J is 1.4.

Achieving the laser intensity of 5.5×1022 W/cm2 with a wavefront-corrected multi-PW laser

The generation of ultrahigh intensity laser pulses was investigated by tightly focusing a wavefront-corrected multi-petawatt Ti:sapphire laser. For the wavefront correction of the PW laser, two stages of deformable mirrors were employed. The multi-PW laser beam was tightly focused by an f/1.6 off-axis parabolic mirror and the focal spot profile was measured. After the wavefront correction, the Strehl ratio was about 0.4, and the spot size in full width at half maximum was 1.5×1.8 μm², close to the diffraction-limited value. The measured peak intensity was 5.5×10²² W/cm², achieving the highest laser intensity ever reached.

Probing non-perturbative QED with electron-laser collisions

The vast majority of QED results are obtained in relatively weak fields and so in the framework of perturbation theory. However, forthcoming laser facilities providing extremely high fields can be used to enter not-yet-studied regimes. Here, a scheme is proposed that might be used to reach a supercritical regime of radiation reaction or even the fully non-perturbative regime of quantum electrodynamics. The scheme considers the collision of a 100 GeV-class electron beam with a counterpropagating ultraintense electromagnetic pulse. To reach these supercritical regimes, it is unavoidable to use a pulse with ultrashort duration. Using two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations, it is therefore shown how one can convert a next-generation optical laser to an ultraintense (I ≈ 2.9 × 10²⁴ Wcm^-2) attosecond (duration ≈ 150 as) pulse. It is shown that if the perturbation theory persists in extreme fields, the spectrum of secondary particles can be found semi-analytically. In contrast, a comparison with experimental data may allow differentiating the contribution of high-order radiative corrections if the perturbation theory breaks.

Quasimonoenergetic Proton Bunch Acceleration Driven by Hemispherically Converging Collisionless Shock in a Hydrogen Cluster Coupled with Relativistically Induced Transparency

An approach for accelerating a quasimonoenergetic proton bunch via a hemispherically converging collisionless shock created in laser-cluster interactions at the relativistically induced transparency (RIT) regime is studied using three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations. By the action of focusing a petawatt class laser pulse onto a micron-size spherical hydrogen cluster, a crescent-shaped collisionless shock is launched at the laser-irradiated hemisphere and propagates inward. The shock converges at the sphere center in concurrence with the onset of the RIT, thereby allowing the proton bunch to be pushed out from the shock surface in the laser propagation direction. The proton bunch experiences further acceleration both inside and outside of the cluster to finally exhibit a quasimonoenergetic spectral peak around 300 MeV while maintaining a narrow energy spread (∼10%) and a small half-divergence angle (∼5°) via the effect of the RIT. This mechanism works for finite ranges of parameters with threshold values concerning the laser peak intensity and the cluster radius, resulting from the synchronization of the multiple processes in a self-consistent manner. The present scheme utilizing the internal and external degrees of freedom ascribed to the spherical cluster leads to the proton bunch alternative to the plain target, which allows the operation with a high repetition rate and impurity free.

All-optical structuring of laser-driven proton beam profiles

Extreme field gradients intrinsic to relativistic laser-interactions with thin solid targets enable compact MeV proton accelerators with unique bunch characteristics. Yet, direct control of the proton beam profile is usually not possible. Here we present a readily applicable all-optical approach to imprint detailed spatial information from the driving laser pulse onto the proton bunch. In a series of experiments, counter-intuitively, the spatial profile of the energetic proton bunch was found to exhibit identical structures as the fraction of the laser pulse passing around a target of limited size. Such information transfer between the laser pulse and the naturally delayed proton bunch is attributed to the formation of quasi-static electric fields in the beam path by ionization of residual gas. Essentially acting as a programmable memory, these fields provide access to a higher level of proton beam manipulation.

Improvement of the focusing ability by double deformable mirrors for 10-PW-level Ti: sapphire chirped pulse amplification laser system

Double deformable mirrors (DMs) with different actuator densities are cascaded to optimize the wavefront aberrations to improve the focus intensity of the Shanghai super-intense ultrafast laser facility (SULF), which plans to generate 10 PW laser pulse. The beam aberrations near the focal spot are corrected from 0.556 um to 0.112 um in RMS by a 300-mm DM with a large stroke installed after the compressor. After then, it is further optimized to 0.041 um using a 130-mm DM with a high spatial resolution working after the main amplifier. The corrected beam is focused to 2.75 × 2.87 um² at the full width at half maximum (FWHM) with an f/2.5 off-axis parabolic mirror (OAP), which contains approximately 27.69% energy. A peak intensity of 2 × 10²² W/cm² is achieved at the output of 5.4 PW, and it could exceed 10²³ W/cm² in the SULF 10 PW laser facility using an f/1.8 OAP.

Intense, directional and tunable γ-ray emission via relativistic oscillating plasma mirror

A mechanism for high energy γ-photon generation based on laser-plasma accelerator is proposed. The laser pulse with a peak intensity of 10²²W/cm² accelerates the electron beam to GeV by the laser wakefield effect. A solid Aluminium target serves as a plasma mirror which is located at the rear side of a gas jet and reflects the laser pulse. High order harmonics are generated due to the Doppler effect experienced by the incident laser. The collisions of the reflected attosecond pulses and the energetic electron beam provide a large cross section for nonlinear Compton scattering and produce a collimated γ-photon flux. The mechanism generates GeV photons with a pulse duration given by the duration of the electron beam.

High-contrast high-intensity repetitive petawatt laser

We report the generation of 63 J of broadband pulse energies at 0.1 Hz from the J-KAREN-P laser, which is based on an OPCPA/Ti:sapphire hybrid architecture. Pulse compression down to 30 fs indicates a peak power of over 1 PW. High temporal contrast of 10¹² prior to the main pulse has been demonstrated with 10 J output energy. High intensities of 10²²  W/cm² on target by focusing a 0.3 PW laser with an f/1.3 off-axis parabolic mirror have been achieved. Fundamental processes of laser matter interaction at over 10²²  W/cm² intensities belong to a new branch of science that will be the principal research task of our infrastructure.

Burst intensification by singularity emitting radiation in multi-stream flows

Burst Intensification by Singularity Emitting Radiation (BISER) is proposed. Singularities in multi-stream flows of emitting media cause constructive interference of emitted travelling waves, forming extremely localized sources of bright coherent emission. Here we for the first time demonstrate this extreme localization of BISER by direct observation of nano-scale coherent x-ray sources in a laser plasma. The energy emitted into the spectral range from 60 to 100 eV is up to ~100 nJ, corresponding to ~10¹⁰ photons. Simulations reveal that these sources emit trains of attosecond x-ray pulses. Our findings establish a new class of bright laboratory sources of electromagnetic radiation. Furthermore, being applicable to travelling waves of any nature (e.g. electromagnetic, gravitational or acoustic), BISER provides a novel framework for creating new emitters and for interpreting observations in many fields of science.
