Theoretical excitation of 2-D (1, 1) cavity mode with asymmetric sword-shaped notched square resonators for metamaterial perfect multiband absorbers in infrared range

Ultra-narrow multi-band polarization-insensitive plasmonic perfect absorber for sensing

We theoretically propose a simple ultra-narrow multi-band perfect absorber for sensing applications. The perfect absorber consists of periodically arranged metallic nanodisks etched with regular prismatic holes standing on the dielectric-metal bi-layer films. Multiple ultra-narrow perfect absorption bands are obtained in the near-infrared region with the maximum bandwidth less than 21 nm and the intensity as high as 99.86%. The ultra-narrow multi-band perfect absorption originates from the synergy of localized surface plasmons, propagating surface plasmons and lattice resonances. The perfect absorber also presents other significant advantages, e.g. polarization insensitivity and high sensitivity of surrounding environments. Moreover, the prominent sensing performance for detecting the trace amounts of glucose in water is demonstrated. These features make it a promising candidate with great potential in the fields of perfect absorbers, plasmonic sensors, filters and multiplexing binding bio-molecular detection.

Elimination of Unwanted Modes in Wavelength-Selective Uncooled Infrared Sensors with Plasmonic Metamaterial Absorbers using a Subtraction Operation

Wavelength- or polarization-selective uncooled infrared (IR) sensors have various applications, such as in fire detection, gas analysis, hazardous material recognition, biological analysis, and polarimetric imaging. The unwanted modes originating due to the absorption by the materials used in these sensors, other than plasmonic metamaterial absorbers (PMAs), cause serious issues by degenerating the wavelength or polarization selectivity. In this study, we demonstrate a method for eliminating these unwanted modes in wavelength- or polarization-selective uncooled IR sensors with various PMAs, using a subtraction operation and a reference pixel. The aforementioned sensors and the reference pixels were fabricated using a complementary metal oxide semiconductor and micromachining techniques. We fabricated the reference pixel with the same structure as the PMA sensors, except a flat mirror was formed on the absorber surface instead of PMAs. The spectral responsivity measurements demonstrated that single-mode detection can be achieved through the subtraction operation with the reference pixel. The method demonstrated in this study can be applied to any type of uncooled IR sensors to create high-performance wavelength- or polarization-selective absorbers capable of multispectral or polarimetric detection.

Linearly thermal-tunable near-infrared ultra-narrowband metamaterial perfect absorber with low power and a large modulation depth based on a four-nanorod-coupled a-silicon resonator

The bandwidths of thermal-tunable metamaterial perfect absorbers (MPAs) based on the phase change materials such as Ge₂Sb₂Te₅ and VO₂ are usually hundreds of nanometers at near-infrared frequency. Amorphous silicon (a-Si) provides the approach to achieve linearly thermal-tunable ultra-narrowband MPAs, if the absorption band is narrow enough. Four-nanorod-coupled a-Si resonators are proposed in this Letter. An absorption band at 1064 nm is obtained with ultra-narrow bandwidth (FWHM) only 1.4 nm by exciting the coupled magnetic dipole (CMD) mode, which exhibits great linearity to the temperature. In addition, the thermo-optical sensitivity (S=Δλ/ΔT) is about 0.08 nm/°C. The figure of merit of the thermal tunability performance FOM=S/FWHM=0.06. As a modulator, the critical temperature of absorptivity at 1064 nm is only 40°C, which is much lower than the Ge₂Sb₂Te₅ (GST) and VO₂. In addition, the modulation depth is up to 82% at near-infrared frequency.
