Enhanced absorption and photoluminescence from dye-containing thin polymer film on plasmonic array

Enhancing Up-Conversion Luminescence Using Dielectric Metasurfaces: Role of the Quality Factor of Resonance at a Pumping Wavelength

Photonic applications of up-conversion luminescence (UCL) suffer from poor external quantum yield owing to a low absorption cross-section of UCL nanoparticles (UCNPs) doped with lanthanide ions. In this regard, plasmonic nanostructures have been proposed for enhancing UCL intensity through strong electromagnetic local-field enhancement; however, their intrinsic ohmic loss opens additional nonradiative decay channels. Herein, we demonstrate that dielectric metasurfaces can overcome this disadvantage. A periodic array of amorphous-silicon nanodisks serves as a metasurface on which a layer of UCNPs is self-assembled. Sharp resonances supported by the metasurface overlap the absorption wavelength (λ = 980 nm) of UCNPs to excite them, resulting in the enhancement of UCL intensity. We further sharpen the resonances through rapid thermal annealing (RTA) of the metasurface, crystallizing silicon to reduce intrinsic optical losses. By optimizing the RTA condition (at 1000 °C for 20 min in N2/H2 (3 vol %) atmosphere), the resonance quality factor improves from 17.2 to 32.9, accompanied by an increase in the enhancement factor of the UCL intensity from 86- to over 600-fold. Moreover, a reduction in the intrinsic optical losses mitigates the UCL thermal quenching under a high excitation density. These findings provide a strategy for increasing light-matter interactions in nanophotonic composite systems and promote UCNP applications.

Tailoring Resonant Energy Transfer Processes for Sustainable and Bio-Inspired Sensing

Dipole–Dipole interactions (DDI) constitute an effective mechanism by which two physical entities can interact with each other. DDI processes can occur in a resonance framework if the energies of the two dipoles are very close. In this case, an energy transfer can occur without the need to emit a photon, taking the name of Förster Resonance Energy Transfer (FRET). Given their large dependence on the distance and orientation between the two dipoles, as well as on the electromagnetic properties of the surrounding environment, DDIs are exceptional for sensing applications. There are two main ways to carry out FRET-based sensing: (i) enhancing or (ii) inhibiting it. Interaction with resonant environments such as plasmonic, optical cavities, and/or metamaterials promotes the former while acting on the distance between the FRET molecules favors the latter. In this review, we browse both the two ways, pointing the spotlight to the intrinsic interdisciplinarity these two sensing routes imply. We showcase FRET-based sensing mechanisms in a variety of contexts, from pH sensors to molecular structure measurements on a nano-metrical scale, with a particular accent on the central and still mostly overlooked role played between a nano-photonically structured environment and photoluminescent molecules.

Surface-Enhanced Absorption Spectroscopy for Optical Fiber Sensing

Visible and near-infrared spectroscopy are widely used for sensing applications but suffer from poor signal-to-noise ratios for the detection of compounds with low concentrations. Enhancement by surface plasmon resonance is a popular technique that can be utilized to increase the signal of absorption spectroscopy due to the increased near-field created close to the plasmons. Despite interest in surface-enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy (SEIRAS), the method is usually applied in lab setups rather than real-life sensing situations. This study aimed to achieve enhanced absorption from plasmons on a fiber-optic probe and thus move closer to applications of SEIRAS. A tapered coreless fiber coated with a 100 nm Au film supported signal enhancement at visible wavelengths. An increase in absorption was shown for two dyes spanning concentrations from 5 × 10⁻⁸ mol/L to 8 × 10⁻⁴ mol/L: Rhodamine 6G and Crystal Violet. In the presence of the Au film, the absorbance signal was 2–3 times higher than from an identically tapered uncoated fiber. The results confirm that the concept of SEIRAS can be implemented on an optical fiber probe, enabling enhanced signal detection in remote sensing applications.
