Multi-user high-speed QAM-OFDMA visible light communication system using a 75-µm single layer quantum dot micro-LED

AL-aided AMC in a multi-user white-light OFDMA VLC system over a light-diffusing fiber loop

To develop an adaptive modulation scheme for flexible high-speed multi-user visible light communication (VLC), automatic modulation classification (AMC) is adopted for monitoring the modulation formats of different subcarrier groups. An AMC scheme based on a joint convolutional neural network (CNN), active learning (AL), and data augmentation (DA) is demonstrated over an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing access (OFDMA) VLC system. The configuration of the diffuse white-light VLC system is combined with a pair integrated transceiver module, a light-diffusing fiber (LDF), and a wireless channel, which can provide white-light illumination and ubiquitous access. Within the forward error correction (FEC) threshold, the data rates of the white-light VLC links can reach 325.5 Mbps with a bit error rate (BER) of 2.163 × 10^-3. An experiment with two-user access via the proposed VLC link with an unequal bandwidth allocation was demonstrated. The performance of the AL-aided CNN AMC scheme also shows a classification accuracy rate of 95.48% for the constellation diagrams of different subcarriers of the OFDMA signal over 240 training samples and faster convergence than a CNN-based AMC.

12 Gbit/s indoor optical wireless communication system with ultrafast beam-steering using tunable VCSEL

Optical wireless communication (OWC) using line-of-sight connections has great application potential for indoor scenes due to its advantages of high data transmission speed and privacy. In our proposed system, we use infrared tunable vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) as light source, array waveguide gratings (AWG) combined with 6 × 6 integrated optical fiber arrays as a router to realize ultrafast beam-steering and high capacity point-to-point data transmission, which makes the indoor OWC system compact, low-cost, and easy to install. The high tuning rate of VCSEL enables the channel switching to be completed within 1.7 µs. Based on the modulation format of non-return-to-zero on-off keying (NRZ-OOK), a data rate of 12 Gbit/s per channel can be realized with high sensitivity through 3.1 m free space when the detected optical power is low. The system is proved to be a flexible link with high-speed communication for mobile terminals in a limited space.

Multi-user accessible indoor infrared optical wireless communication systems employing VIPA-based 2D optical beam-steering technique

Infrared optical wireless communication system can achieve ultrahigh capacity and high privacy data transmission. However, for using narrow infrared laser beam as carrier to transmit signal, the high-speed data transmission can only be achieved by point-to-point connection. With the rapid number increasement of consumer electronic devices, such connection method puts a heavy burden on the number of transmitters. Thus, the transmitting end with the point-to-multipoint capability or multi-user accessibility is required. In this paper, we present a multi-user accessible indoor infrared optical wireless communication system employing passive diffractive optics based on a virtually imaged phased array (VIPA). Multiple beams can be generated in a point-to-multipoint scheme by using VIPA-based beam-steering antenna (BSA). On the other hand, by tuning wavelength of laser source, fast 2D steering of multiple beams with the same steering trajectory is supported, which can be used for user ends with changing locations. In the experiment, 5 beams are generated by utilizing only one transmitter. All five beams can realize 12.5 Gb/s on-off-keying (OOK) data rate transmission. Free-space optical wireless transmission at 3.6-m communication distance is demonstrated for system performance verification and evaluation. a total 3.44°×7.9° scanning field of view of five beams is achieved.

Full-duplex high-speed indoor optical wireless communication system based on a micro-LED and VCSEL array

We built a full-duplex high-speed optical wireless communication (OWC) system based on high-bandwidth micro-size devices, for which micro-LED and VCSEL arrays are implemented to establish downlink and uplink, respectively. The high-capacity downlink based on a single-pixel quantum dot (QD) micro-LED can reach a data rate of 2.74 Gbps with adaptive orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). VCSEL-based line-of-sight (LOS) and non-line-of-sight (NLOS) uplinks are designed with lens-free receiving functions for a 2.2-m communication distance. Experimental results have been demonstrated and confirmed that both downlink and uplinks are capable of providing sufficient bandwidth for a multi-gigabit OWC. Besides, the lens-free uplink receiver can alleviate requirements for aligning and improve the mobility of the transmitter. The VCSELs implemented for both systems work with low driving currents of 140-mA and 190-mA under consideration of the human eye safety. For non-return-to-zero on-off keying (NRZ-OOK), both uplinks can achieve 2.125 Gbps with bit-error-rate (BER) lower than the forward error correction (FEC) threshold of 3.8×10^-3 for Ethernet access.

Direct Epitaxial Approach to Achieve a Monolithic On-Chip Integration of a HEMT and a Single Micro-LED with a High-Modulation Bandwidth

Visible light communications (VLC) require III-nitride visible micro-light-emitting diodes (μLEDs) with a high-modulation bandwidth. Such μLEDs need to be driven at a high injection current density on a kA/cm² scale, which is about 2 orders of magnitude higher than those for normal visible LED operation. μLEDs are traditionally fabricated by dry-etching techniques where dry-etching-induced damages are unavoidable, leading to both a substantial reduction in performance and a great challenge to viability at a high injection current density. Furthermore, conventional biasing (which is simply applied across a p-n junction) is good enough for normal LED operation but generates a great challenge for a single μLED, which needs to be modulated at a high injection current density and at a high frequency. In this work, we have proposed a concept for an epitaxial integration and then demonstrated a completely different method that allows us to achieve an epitaxial integration of a single μLED with a diameter of 20 μm and an AlGaN/GaN high-electron-mobility transistor (HEMT), where the emission from a single μLED is modulated by tuning the gate voltage of its HEMT. Furthermore, such a direct epitaxial approach has entirely eliminated any dry-etching-induced damages. As a result, we have demonstrated an epitaxial integration of monolithic on-chip μLED-HEMT with a record modulation bandwidth of 1.2 GHz on industry-compatible c-plane substrates.
