Integrated plasmonic biosensor on a vertical cavity surface emitting laser platform

SPP excitation and coupling mechanism based on micro/nano fibers

A hot trend in the development of optoelectronic devices is how to use the principle of surface plasmon resonance to enhance the performance of integrated photonics devices and achieve miniaturization. This paper proposes an accompanying waveguide coupling structure of micro/nano fibers, which consists of two parallel-placed micro/nano fibers (MNFs) coated with a silver film in the waist region and infused with a refractive index matching oil. In the overlapping region, there exists a segment of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) coupling area. The excitation and coupling characteristics of SPPs are studied through numerical simulation. Optimal coupling enhancement configuration is obtained by studying variables such as spacing distance, coupling length, and metal film thickness. A comparison is made with the SPP intensity of a single MNF, showing a 220% increase in electric field intensity, demonstrating its excellent coupling effect. By using this coupling structure, exploration of SPPs excitation and coupling mechanisms is enhanced, and structures resembling interferometric devices can be designed, providing new insights for high-performance miniaturized devices.

Label-free integrated microfluidic plasmonic biosensor from vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers for SARS-CoV-2 receptor binding domain protein detection

The nanoplasmonic sensor of the nanograting array has a remarkable ability in label-free and rapid biological detection. The integration of the nanograting array with the standard vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSEL) platform can achieve a compact and powerful solution to provide on-chip light sources for biosensing applications. Here, a high sensitivity and label-free integrated VCSELs sensor was developed as a suitable analysis technique for COVID-19 specific receptor binding domain (RBD) protein. The gold nanograting array is integrated on VCSELs to realize the integrated microfluidic plasmonic biosensor of on-chip biosensing. The 850 nm VCSELs are used as a light source to excite the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect of the gold nanograting array to detect the concentration of attachments. The refractive index sensitivity of the sensor is 2.99 × 10⁶ nW/RIU. The aptamer of RBD was modified on the surface of the gold nanograting to detect the RBD protein successfully. The biosensor has high sensitivity and a wide detection range of 0.50 ng/mL - 50 µg/mL. This VCSELs biosensor provides an integrated, portable, and miniaturized idea for biomarker detection.

Trends of Biosensing: Plasmonics through Miniaturization and Quantum Sensing

Despite being extremely old concepts, plasmonics and surface plasmon resonance-based biosensors have been increasingly popular in the recent two decades due to the growing interest in nanooptics and are now of relevant significance in regards to applications associated with human health. Plasmonics integration into point-of-care devices for health surveillance has enabled significant levels of sensitivity and limit of detection to be achieved and has encouraged the expansion of the fields of study and market niches devoted to the creation of quick and incredibly sensitive label-free detection. The trend reflects in wearable plasmonic sensor development as well as point-of-care applications for widespread applications, demonstrating the potential impact of the new generation of plasmonic biosensors on human well-being through the concepts of personalized medicine and global health. In this context, the aim here is to discuss the potential, limitations, and opportunities for improvement that have arisen as a result of the integration of plasmonics into microsystems and lab-on-chip over the past five years. Recent applications of plasmonic biosensors in microsystems and sensor performance are analyzed. The final analysis focuses on the integration of microfluidics and lab-on-a-chip with quantum plasmonics technology prospecting it as a promising solution for chemical and biological sensing. Here it is underlined how the research in the field of quantum plasmonic sensing for biological applications has flourished over the past decade with the aim to overcome the limits given by quantum fluctuations and noise. The significant advances in nanophotonics, plasmonics and microsystems used to create increasingly effective biosensors would continue to benefit this field if harnessed properly.

Materials Perspectives of Integrated Plasmonic Biosensors

With the growing need for portable, compact, low-cost, and efficient biosensors, plasmonic materials hold the promise to meet this need owing to their label-free sensitivity and deep light-matter interaction that can go beyond the diffraction limit of light. In this review, we shed light on the main physical aspects of plasmonic interactions, highlight mainstream and future plasmonic materials including their merits and shortcomings, describe the backbone substrates for building plasmonic biosensors, and conclude with a brief discussion of the factors affecting plasmonic biosensing mechanisms. To do so, we first observe that 2D materials such as graphene and transition metal dichalcogenides play a major role in enhancing the sensitivity of nanoparticle-based plasmonic biosensors. Then, we identify that titanium nitride is a promising candidate for integrated applications with performance comparable to that of gold. Our study highlights the emerging role of polymer substrates in the design of future wearable and point-of-care devices. Finally, we summarize some technical and economic challenges that should be addressed for the mass adoption of plasmonic biosensors. We believe this review will be a guide in advancing the implementation of plasmonics-based integrated biosensors.
