Scanning near-field optical images of ordered polystyrene particle layers in transmission and luminescence excitation modes

Light propagation from a fluorescent particle embedded in a photonic cluster of micrometer-sized dielectric spheres

In self-assembled multilayer arrays of micrometer-sized spheres that include small amounts of fluorescent particles, unique six-dot-triangular and seven-dot-hexagonal patterns have been known to appear in the fluorescence microscopic images. Although it has been suggested that these two types of patterns correspond to local domain structures, i.e., face centered cubic (fcc) or hexagonal closed packed (hcp), no conclusive evidence has been provided to support this claim. In this study, we systematically investigated the relationship between the propagation patterns and the arrangement of the particles. Through a cross-check between an experiment using well-defined clusters fabricated by a micromanipulation technique and a rigorous calculation based on the expansion of vector spherical harmonics, we confirmed that the six-dot-triangular and seven-dot-hexagonal patterns correspond to the fcc and hcp domains, respectively. Further, we also found that the propagation patterns depend on the size of the clusters. As a result of a quantitative discussion on the light propagation in clusters with various sizes, it was clarified that a sufficient domain size is necessary for the appearance of clear triangular or hexagonal patterns.

Observation of nanojet-induced modes with small propagation losses in chains of coupled spherical cavities

Nanojet-induced modes (NIMs) and their attenuation properties are studied in linear chains consisting of tens of touching polystyrene microspheres with sizes in the 2-10 micro m range. To couple light to NIMs we used locally excited sources of light formed by several dye-doped fluorescent microspheres from the same chain of cavities. We directly observed the formation and propagation of NIMs by means of the scattering imaging technique. By measuring attenuation at long distances from the source, we demonstrate propagation losses for NIMs as small as 0.5 dB per sphere.

Analysis of specular resonance in dielectric bispheres using rigorous and geometrical-optics theories

We have recently identified the resonant scattering from dielectric bispheres in the specular direction, which has long been known as the specular resonance, to be a type of rainbow (a caustic) and a general phenomenon for bispheres. We discuss the details of the specular resonance on the basis of systematic calculations. In addition to the rigorous theory, which precisely describes the scattering even in the resonance regime, the ray-tracing method, which gives the scattering in the geometrical-optics limit, is used. Specular resonance is explicitly defined as strong scattering in the direction of the specular reflection from the symmetrical axis of the bisphere whose intensity exceeds that of the scattering from noninteracting bispheres. Then the range of parameters for computing a particular specular resonance is specified. This resonance becomes prominent in a wide range of refractive indices (from 1.2 to 2.2) in a wide range of size parameters (from five to infinity) and for an arbitrarily polarized light incident within an angle of 40 degrees to the symmetrical axis. This particular scattering can stay evident even when the spheres are not in contact or the sizes of the spheres are different. Thus specular resonance is a common and robust phenomenon in dielectric bispheres. Furthermore, we demonstrate that various characteristic features in the scattering from bispheres can be explained successfully by using intuitive and simple representations. Most of the significant scatterings other than the specular resonance are also understandable as caustics in geometrical-optics theory. The specular resonance becomes striking at the smallest size parameter among these caustics because its optical trajectory is composed of only the refractions at the surfaces and has an exceptionally large intensity. However, some characteristics are not accounted for by geometrical optics. In particular, the oscillatory behaviors of their scattering intensity are well described by simple two-wave interference models.

Microsphere resonators strongly coupled to a plane dielectric substrate: coupling via the optical near field

A model is proposed that describes the essential optical process in the recently observed resonant light scattering from a microsphere resonator that is strongly coupled to the substrate. The experimentally observed field patterns across the resonance can be reproduced quite well by a numerical calculation taking into account only a few vector spherical waves that are converted from nonpropagating to propagating waves at the substrate surface. Explicit consideration of the multiple-reflection effect is not necessary to reproduce the experimental results. Comparison of the experiment and the calculation suggests the splitting of degenerate resonance modes that have different azimuthal mode numbers within a single broad resonance line. These results are discussed on the basis of the strongly coupled nature of the system.
