Intracavity frequency doubling of a diode-pumped 946-nm Nd:YAG laser with bulk periodically poled MgO LiNbO(3)

Efficient generation of coherent blue light at 440 nm by intracavity-frequency-tripling 1319-nm emission from a Nd:YAG laser

A new route for efficiently generating coherent blue light has been explored based on intracavity effective third-harmonic generation in one partly periodically poled KTiOPO4 crystal placed inside the cavity of a diode-pumped Nd:YAG laser. To achieve efficient conversion, we use a dual-temperature oven to separately control the phase-matching conditions for the two second-order nonlinear processes. In addition, a Fabry-Perot cavity at 660 nm is incorporated into the crystal to increase the blue power significantly. When the laser is Q switched to produce long pulses, an average power of 118 mW is generated at 440 nm at a pump power of 10 W.

Imaging and detection technologies for image analysis in electrophoresis

Image capture is the first step of image analysis. There are two major devices for image capture in the field of electrophoresis. One is the charged-couple device (CCD) camera and the other is the scanner. Image capture technologies have shown great progress in recent years especially in the field of fluorescence detection and chemiluminescent detection. The direction of image analysis is high resolution, wide dynamic range and high density precision and this holds true for the CCD camera system. Various components in the CCD camera system suitable for high-sensitive fluorescence detection and chemiluminescent detection are explained. As an example, the LAS-1000plus camera system which has 1364 x 922 pixels and generates 14-bits image is introduced. Powerful cooling enables overnight exposure of chemiluminescence. Introduction of blue light-emitting diode (LED) as excitation light source improved safety to eyes. Two types of scanners for fluorescence detection and the specific characteristics are explained. There are mechanical scanning systems using confocal optics and optical scanning systems using light collecting guide optics. Deep focusing range and equal fluorescence intensity at various depth is a characteristic feature of light collecting guide optics.

Generation of 740 mW of blue light by intracavity frequency doubling with a first-order quasi-phase-matched KTiOPO(4) crystal

We report on efficient intracavity frequency doubling of a cw diode-pumped Nd:YAG laser on the (4)F(3/2)?(4)I(9/2) laser transition at 946 nm. The nonlinear crystal used in the experiments was a first-order quasi-phase-matched flux-grown KTiOPO(4) crystal (period, 6.09mum ; thickness, 1 mm; length, 9 mm). The fluctuations in the generated second-harmonic wave were lower than 3% at output powers of as much as 500 mW. The overall optical-to-optical efficiency was 5.7%. A maximum output power of 740 mW of blue light was generated, which was stable for only 0.5 min. The decrease the output power at this power level was attributed to heating and thermal lensing in the periodically poled KTiOPO(4) crystal. The short-term behavior of the second-harmonic wave exhibited switching between a cw mode and chaotic intensity fluctuations.
