Enhancement of chi((2)) cascading processes in one-dimensional photonic bandgap structures

Modeling of surface-induced second-harmonic generation from multilayer structures by the transfer matrix method

We analytically and numerically investigate surface second-harmonic generation (SHG) from a stack of dielectric layers. We develop a theoretical formalism based on the transfer matrix method for the calculation of the surface-driven second-harmonic radiation from multilayer structures and elaborate it for the case of ultrathin dielectric layers using a power series expansion to derive the effective surface nonlinear tensor for the whole stack. We show that for deeply subwavelength thicknesses of the layers the surface responses from all interfaces can efficiently sum up, leading to largely enhanced efficiency of SHG. As a result, such surface-driven nonlinearity can become comparable to the bulk nonlinearity in noncentrosymmetric semiconductors and can yield high performance for nonlinear nanophotonic applications.

Maximum-exponent scaling behavior of optical second-harmonic generation in finite multilayer photonic crystals

Scaling laws of second-harmonic generation (SHG) in nonlinear Bragg stacks (or finite one-dimensional photonic crystals) as a function of the number N of periods are explored. While it is known that SHG scales like the sixth power of N when phase matching is achieved, we find maximal scaling like the eighth power of N under appropriate non-phase-matching conditions with the pump and harmonic waves being resonant with band-edge states. In this framework we introduce the concept of self-adaptive coherence length that scales with the system length. An analytical treatment based on coupled-mode equations clarifies the conditions for obtaining different scaling laws as a function of filling factor in the photonic gap map.

Large enhancement of interface second-harmonic generation near the zero-n(-) gap of a negative-index Bragg grating

We predict a large enhancement of interface second-harmonic generation near the zero-n(-) gap of a Bragg grating made of alternating layers of negative- and positive-index materials. Field localization and coherent oscillations of the nonlinear dipoles located at the structure's interfaces conspire to yield conversion efficiencies at least an order of magnitude greater than those achievable in the same length of nonlinear, phase-matched bulk material. These findings thus point to a new class of second-harmonic-generation devices made of standard centrosymmetric materials.

Energy exchange properties during second-harmonic generation in finite one-dimensional photonic band-gap structures with deep gratings

We study second-harmonic generation in finite, one-dimensional, photonic band-gap structures with large index contrast in the regime of pump depletion and global phase-matching conditions. We report a number of surprising results: above a certain input intensity, field dynamics resemble a multiwave mixing process, where backward and forward components compete for the available energy; the pump field is mostly reflected, revealing a type of optical limiting behavior; and second-harmonic generation becomes balanced in both directions, showing unusual saturation effects with increasing pump intensity. This dynamics was unexpected, and it is bound to influence the way one goes about thinking and designing nonlinear frequency conversion devices in a practical way.

Determination of refractive indices of quarter-wavelength Bragg reflectors by reflectance measurements in wavelength and angular domains

We show that all the structural properties of periodic dielectric multilayers can be accurately determined by a combined measurement of the transmission as a function of the wavelength and of the reflection as a function of the angle of incidence when the wavelength of the incident light is fixed. This method is applied to determine the structural properties of two commercial dielectric mirrors, and the results obtained are compared with a measurement of the same structural parameters by use of another technique based on the more standard optical guiding method.

Photonic band edge effects in finite structures and applications to chi 2 interactions

Using the concept of an effective medium, we derive coupled mode equations for nonlinear quadratic interactions in photonic band gap structures of finite length. The resulting equations reveal the essential roles played by the density of modes and effective phase matching conditions necessary for the strong enhancement of the nonlinear response. Our predictions find confirmation in an experimental demonstration of significant enhancement of second harmonic generation near the photonic band edge. The measured conversion efficiency is in good agreement with the conversion efficiency predicted by the effective-medium model.
