Timing restoration dynamics in an actively mode-locked fiber ring laser

Nearly quantum-noise-limited timing jitter from miniature Er:Yb:glass lasers

We report on nearly quantum-limited timing-jitter performance of two passively mode-locked Er:Yb:glass lasers with a repetition rate of 10 GHz. The relative timing jitter of both lasers was measured to be 190 fs (100 Hz-1.56 MHz) root mean square. The remaining cavity-length fluctuations are below 7.5 pm in the 6 Hz-8 kHz frequency range, indicating the stability of a rugged miniature cavity setup. By actively controlling the cavity length we reduced the timing jitter to 26 fs (6 Hz-1.56 MHz). We also discuss the influence of cavity length on the practically achievable timing jitter.

Ultralow-noise mode-locked laser with coupled optoelectronic oscillator configuration

We describe simultaneous generation of ultralow-noise optical pulses and microwave signal with a mode-locked fiber laser in a coupled optoelectronic oscillator configuration. We demonstrate 9.2-GHz optical and microwave signals with the measured phase noise of -140 dBc/Hz at 10-kHz offset frequency. We show that the mode-locked laser in the photonic oscillator serves as a high-Q filter and is responsible for the observed low phase noise.

Observation of quantum-limited timing jitter in an active, harmonically mode-locked fiber laser

We report on the observation of quantum-limited timing jitter in a harmonically mode-locked soliton fiber laser with an ultralow-noise local oscillator. The effects of amplitude and phase modulation on the spectrum are described and compared with theory.

Spectral oscillations in a frequency-modulation laser operation

We show the existence of coherent oscillations in the optical frequency spectrum of a laser with internal frequency modulation. These oscillations arise in presence of a slight detuning between the modulation frequency and the cavity axial mode separation and are analogous to collective oscillation modes of a chain of weakly coupled pendula with resonance frequencies slightly varying along the chain. Although spectral oscillations are damped due to the finite gain bandwidth of the laser cavity, they can be observed in the transient dynamics during switch-on of the modulator, or can be resonantly excited by an external forcing.

Stabilization of an active harmonically mode-locked fiber laser using two-photon absorption

Two-photon absorption provided by a semiconductor mirror structure is shown to reduce amplitude fluctuations significantly in a harmonically mo e-locked fiber ring laser. Pulse dropouts are eliminated in a laser that produces picosecond pulses at a repetition rate of 2 GHz.
