Piezoelectric single crystals for ultrasonic transducers in biomedical applications

Piezoelectric single crystals, which have excellent piezoelectric properties, have extensively been employed for various sensors and actuators applications. In this paper, the state-of-art in piezoelectric single crystals for ultrasonic transducer applications is reviewed. Firstly, the basic principles and design considerations of piezoelectric ultrasonic transducers will be addressed. Then, the popular piezoelectric single crystals used for ultrasonic transducer applications, including LiNbO₃ (LN), PMN-PT and PIN-PMN-PT, will be introduced. After describing the preparation and performance of the single crystals, the recent development of both the single-element and array transducers fabricated using the single crystals will be presented. Finally, various biomedical applications including eye imaging, intravascular imaging, blood flow measurement, photoacoustic imaging, and microbeam applications of the single crystal transducers will be discussed.

Low power consumption integrated acousto-optic filter in domain inverted LiNbO3 superlattice

We report on an integrated acousto-optic filter in domain inverted LiNbO3 using a coplanar electrode configuration, which can achieve complete optical switching at electrical powers as low as 50 mW. These values are more than one order of magnitude lower than previously reported results [Opt. Lett. 34, 3205 (2009)]. In order to design the low power consumption devices, we have calculated surface acoustic wave excitation, propagation and acousto-optic interaction in the domain inverted LiNbO3 superlattice using scalar approximation and FEM analysis. Results from both modeling techniques are in good agreement with the experiments, including direct measurement of the acoustic displacement using laser interferometry and acousto-optic performance.

A bidirectional tunable optical diode based on periodically poled LiNbO3

We propose a bidirectional tunable optical diode based on a periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) with defect. An acoustic wave propagates together with the light beam so that a collinear photon-phonon interaction happens, which affects the nonlinear optical processes in PPLN. The fundamental wave exhibits an optical diode effect, i.e., the light only may travel toward a single direction while the opposite way is isolated. However, the acoustic wave could be used to adjust the contrast of optical isolation from -1 to 1. A direction-optional operation is thus realized. Moreover, the advantages of our tunable PPLN optical diode are also discussed.

Integrated acousto-optic polarization converter in a ZX-cut LiNbO(3) waveguide superlattice

We report an integrated acousto-optic polarization converter exploiting a novel surface acoustic superlattice (S-ASL) transducer. The S-ASL transducer is made of a ZX-cut periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) crystal with uniform coplanar electrodes for surface acoustic wave (SAW) generation. For a PPLN period of 20 microm the SAW is excited at an rf of about 190 MHz, while the phase matching occurs at an optical wavelength of around 1456 nm. The measured mode conversion efficiency of 90% at an input rf power of 1 W and the 3 dB optical bandwidth of 2.5 nm confirm the confinement of the SAW between the electrode gap and the constructive interaction along the whole 10 mm electrode length.

Acousto-optic tunable second harmonic generation in periodically poled LiNbO3

Acousto-optic (AO) tunable second harmonic generation (SHG) was proposed in periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN). The acoustic wave could either be induced from an external transducer or self-generated in PPLN driving with a cross-field radio frequency field. The reciprocal vector of PPLN compensates the SHG wave-vector mismatch when quasi-phase- matching (QPM) condition is satisfied, while phonons with suitable frequencies may affect it by scattering photons to different polarization state. The QPM SHG and AO polarization rotation are coupled together. Second harmonic waves' intensities, polarization states and even phases thus could be manipulated instantly through AO interaction.

Realization of an optical communication tunable filter using a diffraction-based optical system

Optical bandpass tunable filters are key elements for dense WDM optical communication systems. Recently, a realization of optical linear transformation using a spatial diffraction optical system was presented and theoretically analyzed [J. Opt. Soc. Am. A21, 732 (2004)]. We present an optical bandpass tunable filter based on this optical system and a spatial light modulator. The mathematical analysis and additional computer simulations for testing the filter's basic parameters using the Fresnel diffraction theory are presented. Some newly obtained laboratory experimental results of the device in the optical visible spectrum will be shown.

Monolithic bulk shear-wave acousto-optic tunable filter

We demonstrate a monolithic bulk shear-wave acousto-optic tunable filter combining a piezoelectric transducer array and the acoustic interaction medium in a single crystal. An X-propagating acoustic longitudinal wave is excited in the "crossed-field" scheme by an rf-Ey-field in a chirped acoustic superlattice formed by domain-inversion in lithium niobate (LiNbO3). The acoustic longitudinal wave is efficiently (97.5%) converted at a mechanically free boundary into a Y-propagating acoustic slow-shear wave that couples collinearly propagating e- and o-polarized optical waves. A relative conversion efficiency of 80%/W was measured at 980 nm.

Full electrical characterization of aperiodic acoustic gratings by an enhanced delta-function model: theory and experiment

We derive the admittance of an aperiodic one-dimensional acoustic grating with acoustically matched boundaries using an enhanced delta-function model combined with the Green's function approach. The expression obtained is compared with the classical delta-function model and with electric back reflection measurements on a linearly chirped bulk acoustic grating with matched boundaries formed in LiNbO3 by domain inversion and excited in "crossed-field" scheme. The agreement between calculated and measured results is excellent.
