Stabilization of an active harmonically mode-locked fiber laser using two-photon absorption

Rational number harmonic mode-locked dual-loop optoelectronic oscillator with low supermode noise and low intermodulation distortions

A rational number harmonic mode-locked dual-loop optoelectronic oscillator (RHML-DL-OEO) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. In the proposed system, an external radio frequency (RF) signal and a feedback oscillating microwave signal drive two arms of a dual-drive Mach-Zehnder modulator (DMZM). Mode locking is realized by frequency detuning. The larger effective free spectrum range (FSR) and higher side-mode suppression result from the Vernier effect effectively suppress supermode noise and intermodulation distortions (IMDs). Experimental results demonstrate that the microwave frequency comb (MFC) signals with repetition frequencies of 901.8 kHz, 2.3046 MHz and 5.3106 MHz are generated by 9th-, 23rd- and 53rd-order rational number harmonic mode-locking, respectively. Compared with the rational number harmonic mode-locked optoelectronic oscillator based on single-loop structure, the supermode noise suppression ratios of the scheme we propose are improved by 30.5 dB, 27.6 dB and 20.3 dB, respectively. Furthermore, the performance of single sideband (SSB) phase noise is also investigated.

Supermode noise suppression with polarization-multiplexed dual-loop for active mode-locking optoelectronic oscillator

The active mode-locking (AML) technique has been widely used in erbium-doped fiber lasers to generate picosecond pulse trains. Here we propose a novel active mode-locking dual-loop optoelectronic oscillator (AML-DL-OEO), which can generate microwave frequency comb (MFC) signals with adjustable comb spacings. Based on this scheme, the order of harmonic mode-locking is dramatically decreased for a certain AML driving frequency compared with a single-loop AML-OEO. Thus, the supermode noise caused by harmonic mode-locking can be efficiently suppressed. In addition, the sidemodes are well suppressed by the dual-loop architecture. An experiment is performed. MFC signals with different comb spacings are generated under fundamental or harmonic mode-locking states. AML-DL-OEO systems with different length differences between two loops are implemented to evaluate supermode noise suppression capability. The performance of the generated MFC signals is recorded and analyzed.

Generation and Coherent Control of Pulsed Quantum Frequency Combs

We present a method for the generation and coherent manipulation of pulsed quantum frequency combs. Until now, methods of preparing high-dimensional states on-chip in a practical way have remained elusive due to the increasing complexity of the quantum circuitry needed to prepare and process such states. Here, we outline how high-dimensional, frequency-bin entangled, two-photon states can be generated at a stable, high generation rate by using a nested-cavity, actively mode-locked excitation of a nonlinear micro-cavity. This technique is used to produce pulsed quantum frequency combs. Moreover, we present how the quantum states can be coherently manipulated using standard telecommunications components such as programmable filters and electro-optic modulators. In particular, we show in detail how to accomplish state characterization measurements such as density matrix reconstruction, coincidence detection, and single photon spectrum determination. The presented methods form an accessible, reconfigurable, and scalable foundation for complex high-dimensional state preparation and manipulation protocols in the frequency domain.

Practical system for the generation of pulsed quantum frequency combs

The on-chip generation of large and complex optical quantum states will enable low-cost and accessible advances for quantum technologies, such as secure communications and quantum computation. Integrated frequency combs are on-chip light sources with a broad spectrum of evenly-spaced frequency modes, commonly generated by four-wave mixing in optically-excited nonlinear micro-cavities, whose recent use for quantum state generation has provided a solution for scalable and multi-mode quantum light sources. Pulsed quantum frequency combs are of particular interest, since they allow the generation of single-frequency-mode photons, required for scaling state complexity towards, e.g., multi-photon states, and for quantum information applications. However, generation schemes for such pulsed combs have, to date, relied on micro-cavity excitation via lasers external to the sources, being neither versatile nor power-efficient, and impractical for scalable realizations of quantum technologies. Here, we introduce an actively-modulated, nested-cavity configuration that exploits the resonance pass-band characteristic of the micro-cavity to enable a mode-locked and energy-efficient excitation. We demonstrate that the scheme allows the generation of high-purity photons at large coincidence-to-accidental ratios (CAR). Furthermore, by increasing the repetition rate of the excitation field via harmonic mode-locking (i.e. driving the cavity modulation at harmonics of the fundamental repetition rate), we managed to increase the pair production rates (i.e. source efficiency), while maintaining a high CAR and photon purity. Our approach represents a significant step towards the realization of fully on-chip, stable, and versatile sources of pulsed quantum frequency combs, crucial for the development of accessible quantum technologies.

Passive stabilization of a passively mode-locked laser by nonlinear absorption in indium phosphide

A diode-pumped Nd:KGd(WO4)2 laser mode locked by a saturable Bragg reflector (SBR) is passively stabilized to suppress Q-switched mode locking and to extend the parameter range of continuous-wave mode locking. An indium phosphide plate exhibiting two-photon absorption and free-carrier absorption is used for passive stabilization. The intracavity pulse energy for the onset of stable continuous-wave mode locking is reduced by a factor of 4 compared with the laser without stabilization. By increasing the modulation depth of the SBR, pulse shortening by 30% is achieved and bandwidth-limited 6.2-ps pulses are measured.

Ultralow noise and supermode suppression in an actively mode-locked external-cavity semiconductor diode ring laser

We report what is to our knowledge the lowest phase and amplitude noise characteristics achieved to date in a 10-GHz pulse train produced by the active harmonic mode locking of an external-cavity semiconductor diode laser. Supermode noise has also been suppressed below -140 dBc/Hz by use of a high-finesse fiber Fabry-Perot etalon as an intracavity filter. Novel noise sideband measurements that extend to the Nyquist offset frequency suggest a significant advantage in using harmonic (rather than fundamental) mode locking to produce ultralow-noise pulse trains, owing to the relationship between the noise roll-off frequency and the fundamental cavity frequency.

Stable single- and dual-wavelength fiber laser mode locked and spectrum shaped by a Fabry-Perot saturable absorber

We show that the spectral response of a Fabry-Perot semiconductor saturable absorber depends on laser beam focusing. We used this effect to achieve stable passive mode-locked operation in a simple and environmentally stable fiber laser by introducing spectral filtering and forcing near-resonant operation. By reducing the free spectral range and increasing the nonlinear response of the Fabry-Perot saturable absorber, we obtained dual-wavelength mode-locked operation.
