Escaping solitons from a trapping potential

Solitons propagating within a confining potential undergo momentum-dependent scattering and eventually escape for large excitations. We experimentally highlight this phenomenon in the presence of a nonperturbative nonlinear response using self-confined light beams in a reorientational medium.

Multisoliton ejection from an amplifying potential trap

We study theoretically the dynamics of a beam launched inside an amplifying trap potential. Raising the amplification transforms the dynamics from linear tunneling at low amplification to periodic ejection of a sequence of identical solitons (when the amplification rate exceeds the tunneling rate) and, at strong amplification, to nonperiodic multisoliton ejection.

Observation of soliton tunneling phenomena and soliton ejection

We study, theoretically and experimentally, the nonlinear dynamics of a wave packet launched inside a trap potential. Increasing the power of the wave packet transforms its dynamics from linear tunneling through a potential barrier, to soliton tunneling, and eventually, above a well-defined threshold, to the ejection of a soliton from the potential trap.

Boundary force effects exerted on solitons in highly nonlinear media

We study the effects caused by remote boundaries on soliton dynamics in nonlinear media with a large range of nonlocality, and demonstrate theoretically and experimentally how asymmetric boundary forces can lead to soliton steering and oscillation in predetermined trajectories.

Reflection of quadratic solitons at the boundary of nonlinear media

We report experimental evidence of soliton reflection at the boundary of quadratic nonlinear media. The evolution of beams incident upon the interface of periodically poled LiNbO3 and uniform LiNbO3 is considered; in the whole device the linear refractive index is homogeneous. Linear beam transmission and soliton reflection at the nonlinear phase-mismatched boundary were observed. Numerical simulations that correspond to the experiments are also presented.

Soliton emission at a phase-mismatch boundary in a quadratic nonlinear film waveguide

We report the experimental demonstration of spatial nonlinear beam displacement caused by an interface between periodically modulated and uniform quadratic nonlinearity. We observe intensity- and phase-mismatch-dependent spatial beam displacement at 1548 nm in lithium niobate waveguides. The device has the potential to provide a soliton-emission-based, ultrafast all-optical switch.
