Bound states in the continuum in anisotropic photonic crystal slabs

We investigate the bound states in the continuum (BICs) in photonic crystal slabs composed of alternating anisotropic and isotropic dielectric materials. According to the orientation of optical axis plane, three different configurations are proposed for analyzing various types of BICs, associated with extremely large quality factors and vanishing spectral linewidths. In particular, symmetry-protected (SP) BICs exist at the Brillouin zone center for zero rotation angle of the optical axis, which exhibit antisymmetric field patterns that are decoupled from the symmetric radiating fields. Accidental BICs and Friedrich-Wintgen (FW) BICs also occur at the Brillouin zone center for particular rotation angles of the optical axis. The former emerge on isolated bands with quasi-symmetric or quasi-antisymmetric field patterns, while the latter appear near the avoided crossing between two dispersion bands. At off the Brillouin zone center, SP BICs do not exist while accidental BICs and FW BICs appear at particular optical axis rotation angles, with similar features but somewhat more asymmetric field patterns than those at the Brillouin zone center.

Bound states in the continuum in asymmetric dual-patch metasurfaces

We investigate the bound states in the continuum (BICs) in dielectric metasurfaces consisting of asymmetric dual rectangular patches in the unit cell of a square lattice. Various types of BICs are identified in the metasurface at normal incidence, associated with very large quality factors and vanishing spectral linewidths. In particular, symmetry-protected (SP) BICs occur when the four patches are fully symmetric, which exhibit antisymmetric field patterns that are decoupled from the symmetric incident waves. By breaking the symmetry of patch geometry, the SP BICs degrade to quasi-BICs that are characterized by Fano resonance. Accidental BICs and Friedrich-Wintgen (FW) BICs occur when the asymmetry is introduced in the upper two patches, while holding the lower two patches symmetric. The accidental BICs occur on isolated bands when the linewidth of either the quadrupole-like mode or LC-like mode vanishes by tuning the upper vertical gap width. The FW BICs appear when the avoided crossing is formed between the dispersion bands of dipole-like and quadrupole-like modes by tuning the lower vertical gap width. At a special asymmetry ratio, the accidental BICs and FW BICs may appear in the same transmittance or dispersion diagram, accompanied with the concurrence of dipole-like, quadrupole-like, and LC-like modes.

Controlling Directionality and Dimensionality of Radiation by Perturbing Separable Bound States in the Continuum

A bound state in the continuum (BIC) is an unusual localized state that is embedded in a continuum of extended states. Here, we present the general condition for BICs to arise from wave equation separability. Then we show that by exploiting perturbations of certain symmetry such BICs can be turned into resonances that radiate with a tailorable directionality and dimensionality. Using this general framework, we construct new examples of separable BICs and resonances that can exist in optical potentials for ultracold atoms, photonic systems, and systems described by tight binding. Such resonances with easily reconfigurable radiation allow for applications such as the storage and release of waves at a controllable rate and direction, as well systems that switch between different dimensions of confinement.

Observation of trapped light within the radiation continuum

The ability to confine light is important both scientifically and technologically. Many light confinement methods exist, but they all achieve confinement with materials or systems that forbid outgoing waves. These systems can be implemented by metallic mirrors, by photonic band-gap materials, by highly disordered media (Anderson localization) and, for a subset of outgoing waves, by translational symmetry (total internal reflection) or by rotational or reflection symmetry. Exceptions to these examples exist only in theoretical proposals. Here we predict and show experimentally that light can be perfectly confined in a patterned dielectric slab, even though outgoing waves are allowed in the surrounding medium. Technically, this is an observation of an 'embedded eigenvalue'--namely, a bound state in a continuum of radiation modes--that is not due to symmetry incompatibility. Such a bound state can exist stably in a general class of geometries in which all of its radiation amplitudes vanish simultaneously as a result of destructive interference. This method to trap electromagnetic waves is also applicable to electronic and mechanical waves.

Deterministic design of wavelength scale, ultra-high Q photonic crystal nanobeam cavities

Photonic crystal nanobeam cavities are versatile platforms of interest for optical communications, optomechanics, optofluidics, cavity QED, etc. In a previous work [Appl. Phys. Lett. 96, 203102 (2010)], we proposed a deterministic method to achieve ultrahigh Q cavities. This follow-up work provides systematic analysis and verifications of the deterministic design recipe and further extends the discussion to air-mode cavities. We demonstrate designs of dielectric-mode and air-mode cavities with Q > 10⁹, as well as dielectric-mode nanobeam cavities with both ultrahigh-Q (> 10⁷) and ultrahigh on-resonance transmissions (T > 95%).

Disorder-immune confinement of light in photonic-crystal cavities

We demonstrate by finite-difference time-domain simulations in 2D and 3D that optical cavities in realistic finite photonic crystals have lifetimes and modal volumes that are essentially insensitive to disorder (of various types, including surface disorder and randomized positions), even with unphysically large disorder. A lifetime Q = 10(8) is demonstrated in a 3D single-mode cavity with a half-wavelength mode diameter using only eight vertical periods of a disordered crystal.

Microcavity confinement based on an anomalous zero group-velocity waveguide mode

We propose and demonstrate a mechanism for small-modal-volume high-Q cavities based on an anomalous uniform waveguide mode that has zero group velocity at a nonzero wave vector. In a short piece of a uniform waveguide with a specially designed cross section, light is confined longitudinally by small group-velocity propagation and transversely by a reflective cladding. The quality factor Q is greatly enhanced by the small group velocity for a set of cavity lengths that are separated by approximately pi/k0, where k0 is the longitudinal wave vector for which the group velocity is zero.

Discrete-mode cancellation mechanism for high-Q integrated optical cavities with small modal volume

A mechanism to reduce radiation loss from integrated optical cavities without a complete photonic bandgap is introduced and demonstrated. It is applicable to any device with a patterned substrate (including both low and high index-contrast systems), when it supports discrete guided or leaky modes through which power escaping the cavity can be channeled into radiation. One then achieves the associated increase in Q by designing the cavity such that the near-field pattern becomes orthogonal to these discrete modes, therefore canceling the coupling of power into them and thus reducing the total radiation loss. The method is independent of any delocalization mechanism and can be used to create high-Q cavities with small modal volume.
