Femtosecond time-resolved absorption processes in lithium niobate crystals

Three-photon and four-photon absorption in lithium niobate measured by the Z-scan technique

Open-aperture Z-scan measurements have been carried out to investigate the three-photon (3 PA) and four-photon absorption (4 PA) coefficients at 800 nm and 1030 nm wavelengths, respectively in congruent and stoichiometric lithium niobate (cLN, sLN) with different concentrations of Mg doping. The laser pulse duration at the two wavelengths were 40 and 190 fs. The peak intensity inside the crystals varied between approximately 110 and 550 GW/cm2. The 3 PA and 4 PA coefficients were evaluated using a theoretical model and the results suggest that their minima are at or around the Mg doping level corresponding to the threshold for suppressing photo-refraction for both cLN and sLN. This result can be attributed to the contribution of crystal defects to the 3 PA and 4 PA processes. Furthermore, the 4 PA at 1030 nm exhibited greater nonlinear absorption than the 3 PA at 800 nm under the same intensity level. Possible reasons for this unexpected behavior are discussed. Overall, comparing the 3 PA and 4 PA values of these crystals will enable for selection of the optimum composition of LN crystal for efficient THz generation and for other nonlinear optical processes requiring high pump intensities.

An Introduction to Nonlinear Integrated Photonics Devices: Nonlinear Effects and Materials

The combination of integrated optics technologies with nonlinear photonics, which has led to the growth of nonlinear integrated photonics, has also opened the way to groundbreaking new devices and applications. Here we introduce the main physical processes involved in nonlinear photonics applications, and we discuss the fundaments of this research area, starting from traditional second-order and third-order phenomena and going to ultrafast phenomena. The applications, on the other hand, have been made possible by the availability of suitable materials, with high nonlinear coefficients, and/or by the design of guided-wave structures, which can enhance the material's nonlinear properties. A summary of the most common nonlinear materials is presented, together with a discussion of the innovative ones. The discussion of fabrication processes and integration platforms is the subject of a companion article, also submitted for publication in this journal. There, several examples of nonlinear photonic integrated devices to be employed in optical communications, all-optical signal processing and computing, or quantum optics are shown, too. We aimed at offering a broad overview, even if, certainly, not exhaustive. We hope that the overall work could provide guidance for those who are newcomers to this field and some hints to the interested researchers for a more detailed investigation of the present and future development of this hot and rapidly growing field.

Simulating self-learning in photorefractive optical reservoir computers

Photorefractive materials exhibit an interesting plasticity under the influence of an optical field. By extending the finite-difference time-domain method to include the photorefractive effect, we explore how this property can be exploited in the context of neuromorphic computing for telecom applications. By first priming the photorefractive material with a random bit stream, the material reorganizes itself to better recognize simple patterns in the stream. We demonstrate this by simulating a typical reservoir computing setup, which gets a significant performance boost on performing the XOR on two consecutive bits in the stream after this initial priming step.

Dynamic-grating-assisted energy transfer between ultrashort laser pulses in lithium niobate

Energy redistribution between two subpicosecond laser pulses of 2.5 eV photon energy is observed and studied in congruent, nominally undoped LiNbO₃, aiming to reveal the underlying coupling mechanisms. The dependences of pulse amplification on intensity, frequency detuning and pulse duration point to two different contributions of coupling, both based on self-diffraction from a recorded dynamic grating. The first one is caused by a difference in pulse intensities (transient energy transfer) while the second one originates from a difference in pulse frequencies. The latter appears when chirped pulses are mutually delayed in time. A quite high coupling efficiency has been observed in a 280 µm thin crystal: one order of magnitude energy amplification of a weak pulse and nearly 10% net energy enhancement of one pulse for the case of equal input intensities.

Latent light-assisted poling of LiNbO3

The observation of latent light-assisted poling (LAP) in lithium niobate single crystals is reported. More specifically, the nucleation field is reduced and remains reduced for an extended time period (up to several hours) after irradiation with ultrafast (approximately 150 fs) laser light at a wavelength of 400 nm. The maximum nucleation field reduction measured using latent-LAP (62%) was significantly higher in comparison with regular non-time-delayed LAP (41%) under identical irradiation conditions in undoped congruent lithium niobate crystals. No latent-LAP effect was observed in MgO-doped crystals for the experimental conditions used, despite the strong effect observed using regular LAP. The latent-LAP effect is attributed to the formation of a slowly decaying photo-induced space-charge distribution which assists local ferroelectric domain nucleation. The dynamics of latent-LAP are compared with the dynamics of photorefractive grating decay, recorded in lithium niobate crystals of different doping, confirming the space charge hypothesis.

Femtosecond holography in lithium niobate crystals

Spatial gratings are recorded holographically by two femtosecond pump pulses at 388 nm in lithium niobate (LiNbO3) crystals and read out by a Bragg-matched, temporally delayed probe pulse at 776 nm. We claim, to our knowledge, the first holographic pump-probe experiments with subpicosecond temporal resolution for LiNbO3. An instantaneous grating that is due mostly to the Kerr effect as well as a long-lasting grating that results mainly from the absorption caused by photoexcited carriers was observed. The Kerr coefficient of LiNbO3 for our experimental conditions, i.e., pumped and probed at different wavelengths, was approximately 1.0 x 10(-5) cm2/GW.

Evidence for light-induced hole polarons in LiNbO3

Transient light-induced absorption in LiNbO3 is observed in the blue-green spectral range after pulsed illumination with 532 nm. Its buildup and decay in Fe-doped LiNbO3 is satisfactorily described by a sum of two stretched exponential functions. For undoped LiNbO3, however, only one stretched exponential decay is observed. These experimental results are explained by the formation of both small Nb(Li)4+ electron polarons and O- hole polarons. The mechanism is discussed on the basis of a proposed band scheme.

Investigation of nonlinear absorption processes with femtosecond light pulses in lithium niobate crystals

The propagation of high-power femtosecond light pulses in lithium niobate crystals (LiNb O3 ) is investigated experimentally and theoretically in collinear pump-probe transmission experiments. It is found within a wide intensity range that a strong decrease of the pump transmission coefficient at wavelength 388 nm fully complies with the model of two-photon absorption; the corresponding nonlinear absorption coefficient is beta(p) approximately = 3.5 cm/GW. Furthermore, strong pump pulses induce a considerable absorption for the probe at 776 nm. The dependence of the probe transmission coefficient on the time delay Delta t between probe and pump pulses is characterized by a narrow dip (at Delta t approximately = 0) and a long (on the picosecond time scale) lasting plateau. The dip is due to direct two-photon transitions involving pump and probe photons; the corresponding nonlinear absorption coefficient is beta(r) approximately = 0.9 cm/GW. The plateau absorption is caused by the presence of pump-excited charge carriers; the effective absorption cross section at 776 nm is sigma(r) approximately = 8 x 10(-18) cm(2). The above nonlinear absorption parameters are not strongly polarization sensitive. No specific manifestations of the relaxation of hot carriers are found for a pulse duration of approximately = 0.24 ps.
