Spatial dispersion in metamaterials with negative dielectric permittivity and its effect on surface waves

Extraction and control of permittivity of hyperbolic metamaterials with optical nonlocality

Metal nanorod arrays exhibit hyperbolic dispersion and optical nonlocality under certain conditions. Therefore, their optical behaviors can hardly be expressed by incident-angle-independent effective permittivity. Here we extract effective permittivity of silver nanorod arrays with diameters of 4 nm, 12 nm, and 20 nm by polarized transmission method in the visible range. The incident angles are chosen from 20° to 60° to study the influence of optical nonlocality on permittivity. We demonstrate how the diameter of the nanorods can control the effective permittivity beyond the effective medium theory. The results suggest that the effective permittivity gradually loses its accuracy as the diameter increases due to the optical nonlocality. Our experiment verifies that ultrathin nanorod arrays can resist the fluctuations caused by changes in incident angle. We also extract k-dependent effective permittivity of nanorods with larger diameters.

High power microwave source with a three dimensional printed metamaterial slow-wave structure

For over the last decade, the concept of metamaterials has led to new approaches for considering the interaction of radiation with complex structures. However, practical manifestations of such a device operating at high power densities have proven difficult to achieve due to the resonant nature of metamaterials and the resultant high electric fields, which place severe constraints on manufacturing the slow wave structures. In this paper, we describe the first experimental manifestation of a high power microwave device utilizing a metallic slow wave structure (metamaterial-like) fabricated using additive manufacturing. The feasibility of utilizing additive manufacturing as a technique for building these relatively complicated structures has thus been demonstrated. The MW class microwave source operates in the C-band and shows frequency tunablility with electron beam voltage. The basic electromagnetic characteristics of this device, the construction using additive manufacturing, and the basic performance as a microwave oscillator are considered. Due to the tunable nature of the device, it shows promise not only as an oscillator but also as a microwave amplifier. Therefore, the dispersive characteristics and a discussion of the anticipated gain is included as it relates to an amplifier configuration.

Experimental verification of spoof surface plasmons in wire metamaterials

In this paper, we experimentally demonstrate the excitation of spoof surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) on a wire-medium metamaterial slab in the microwave region. The spoof SPPs are excited on the opposite side of the slab from the source, which is desirable for applications such as sensing devices. Using the prism coupling method, we verify the excitation of spoof SPPs by measuring the reflection spectrum and near-field enhancement. The excitation of spoof SPPs is also verified by using the grating coupling method, where we demonstrate transmission enhancement through the metamaterial slab by placing diffraction gratings on both sides of the slab. Numerical investigation shows that the enhanced transmission can be attributed to the dispersion relations of the spoof SPPs and the periodicity of the diffraction grating. These properties can be used to realize extraordinary transmission and directional beaming.

Study of incident angle dependence for dual-band double negative-index material using elliptical nanohole arrays

This work demonstrates the angular dependence of dual-band negative-index materials implemented by elliptical nanohole arrays (ENAs) consisting of an Al2O3 dielectric layer between two Au films. This article, it is believed for the first time, analyzes the scattering coefficients and displacement current of the ENA at different angles of plane-wave incidence to show that the ENA is double negative (showing both a negative effective permeability μ(eff) and a negative effective permittivity ε(eff) at multiple wavelengths (1095 and 1680 nm) for p polarization over a broad range of incident angles.

Complex k band diagrams of 3D metamaterial/photonic crystals

A finite element method (FEM) for solving a complex valued k(ω) vs. ω dispersion curve of a 3D metamaterial/photonic crystal system is presented. This 3D method is a generalization of a previously reported 2D eigenvalue method [Opt. Express 15, 9681 (2007)]. This method is particularly convenient for analyzing periodic systems containing dispersive (e.g., plasmonic) materials, for computing isofrequency surfaces in the k-space, and for calculating the decay length of the evanescent waves. Two specific examples are considered: a photonic crystal comprised of dielectric spheres and a plasmonic fishnet structure. Hybridization and avoided crossings between Mie resonances and propagating modes are numerically demonstrated. Negative index propagation of four electromagnetic modes distinguished by their symmetry is predicted for the plasmonic fishnets. By calculating the isofrequency contours, we also demonstrate that the fishnet structure is a hyperbolic medium.

Rigorous theoretical framework for particle sizing in turbid colloids using light refraction

Using a non-local effective-medium approach, we analyze the refraction of light in a colloidal medium. We discuss the theoretical grounds and all the necessary precautions to design and perform experiments to measure the effective refractive index in dilute colloids. As an application, we show that it is possible to retrieve the size of small dielectric particles in a colloid by measuring the complex effective refractive index and the volume fraction occupied by the particles.

Guiding, focusing, and sensing on the subwavelength scale using metallic wire arrays

We show that tapered arrays of thin metallic wires can manipulate electromagnetic fields on the subwavelength spatial scale. Two types of nanoscale imaging applications using terahertz and midinfrared waves are enabled: image magnification and radiation focusing. First, the tapered wire array acts as a multipixel TEM endoscope by capturing an electromagnetic field profile created by deeply subwavelength objects at the endoscope's tip and magnifying it for observation. Second, the image of a large mask at the endoscope's base is projected onto a much smaller image at the tip.
