Reducing the first-order Doppler shift in a Sagnac interferometer

Passively Stabilized Phase-Resolved Collinear SFG Spectroscopy Using a Displaced Sagnac Interferometer

Sum-frequency generation (SFG) vibrational spectroscopy is a powerful technique to study interfaces at the molecular level. Phase-resolved SFG (PR-SFG) spectroscopy provides direct information on interfacial molecules' orientation. However, its implementation is technologically demanding: it requires the generation of a local oscillator wave and control of its time delay with sub-fs accuracy. Commonly used noncollinear PR-SFG provides this control naturally but requires very accurate sample height control. Collinear PR-SFG spectroscopy is less demanding regarding sample positioning, but tuning the local oscillator time delay with this beam geometry is challenging. Here, we develop a collinear PR-SFG setup using a displaced Sagnac interferometer. This scheme allows full, independent control of the time delay and intensity of the local oscillator and provides long-time phase stabilization (better than 5° over 12 h) for the measured signal. This approach substantially reduces the complexity of an experimental setup and combines the advantages of collinear and noncollinear PR-SFG techniques.

Photolysis Production and Spectroscopic Investigation of the Highest Vibrational States in H2 (X1Σg+ v = 13, 14)

Rovibrational quantum states in the X1Σg+ electronic ground state of H2 are prepared in the v = 13 vibrational level up to its highest bound rotational level J = 7, and in the highest bound vibrational level v = 14 (for J = 1) by two-photon photolysis of H2S. These states are laser-excited in a subsequent two-photon scheme into F1Σg+ outer well states, where the assignment of the highest (v,J) states is derived from a comparison of experimentally known levels in F1Σg+, combined with ab initio calculations of X1Σg+ levels. The assignments are further verified by excitation of F1Σg+ population into autoionizing continuum resonances, which are compared with multichannel quantum defect calculations. Precision spectroscopic measurements of the F-X intervals form a test for the ab initio calculations of ground state levels at high vibrational quantum numbers and large internuclear separations, for which agreement is found.

Manipulating beams of paramagnetic atoms and molecules using inhomogeneous magnetic fields

We review methods to manipulate the motion of pulsed supersonic atomic and molecular beams using time-independent and -dependent inhomogeneous magnetic fields. In addition, we discuss current and possible future applications and research directions.

Precision measurements and test of molecular theory in highly excited vibrational states of H2 (v = 11)

Accurate E F 1 Σ g + - X 1 Σ g + transition energies in molecular hydrogen were determined for transitions originating from levels with highly excited vibrational quantum number, v = 11, in the ground electronic state. Doppler-free two-photon spectroscopy was applied on vibrationally excited H 2 ∗ , produced via the photodissociation of H2S, yielding transition frequencies with accuracies of 45 MHz or 0.0015 cm-1. An important improvement is the enhanced detection efficiency by resonant excitation to autoionizing 7 p π electronic Rydberg states, resulting in narrow transitions due to reduced ac-Stark effects. Using known EF level energies, the level energies of X(v = 11, J = 1, 3-5) states are derived with accuracies of typically 0.002 cm-1. These experimental values are in excellent agreement with and are more accurate than the results obtained from the most advanced ab initio molecular theory calculations including relativistic and QED contributions.

High-Precision Ramsey-Comb Spectroscopy at Deep Ultraviolet Wavelengths

High-precision spectroscopy in systems such as molecular hydrogen and helium ions is very interesting in view of tests of quantum electrodynamics and the proton radius puzzle. However, the required deep ultraviolet and shorter wavelengths pose serious experimental challenges. Here we show Ramsey-comb spectroscopy in the deep ultraviolet for the first time, thereby demonstrating its enabling capabilities for precision spectroscopy at short wavelengths. We excite ^{84}Kr in an atomic beam on the two-photon 4p^{6}→4p^{5}5p[1/2]_{0} transition at 212.55 nm. It is shown that the ac-Stark shift is effectively eliminated, and combined with a counterpropagating excitation geometry to suppress Doppler effects, a transition frequency of 2 820 833 101 679(103) kHz is found. The uncertainty of our measurement is 34 times smaller than the best previous measurement, and only limited by the 27 ns lifetime of the excited state.

Active fiber-based retroreflector providing phase-retracing anti-parallel laser beams for precision spectroscopy

We present an active fiber-based retroreflector providing high quality phase-retracing anti-parallel Gaussian laser beams for precision spectroscopy of Doppler sensitive transitions. Our design is well-suited for a number of applications where implementing optical cavities is technically challenging and corner cubes fail to match the demanded requirements, most importantly retracing wavefronts and preservation of the laser polarization. To illustrate the performance of the system, we use it for spectroscopy of the 2S-4P transition in atomic hydrogen and demonstrate an average suppression of the first order Doppler shift to 4 parts in 10⁶ of the full collinear shift. This high degree of cancellation combined with our cryogenic source of hydrogen atoms in the metastable 2S state is sufficient to enable determinations of the Rydberg constant and the proton charge radius with competitive uncertainties. Advantages over the usual Doppler cancellation based on corner cube type retroreflectors are discussed as well as an alternative method using a high finesse cavity.

High-precision laser spectroscopy of the CO A(1)Π - X(1)Σ(+) (2,0), (3,0), and (4,0) bands

High-precision two-photon Doppler-free frequency measurements have been performed on the CO A(1)Π - X(1)Σ(+) fourth-positive system (2,0), (3,0), and (4,0) bands. Absolute frequencies of forty-three transitions, for rotational quantum numbers up to J = 5, have been determined at an accuracy of 1.6 × 10(-3) cm(-1), using advanced techniques of two-color 2  +  1' resonance-enhanced multi-photon ionization, Sagnac interferometry, frequency-chirp analysis on the laser pulses, and correction for AC-Stark shifts. The accurate transition frequencies of the CO A(1)Π - X(1)Σ(+) system are of relevance for comparison with astronomical data in the search for possible drifts of fundamental constants in the early universe. The present accuracies in laboratory wavelengths of Δλ/λ = 2 × 10(-8) may be considered exact for the purpose of such comparisons.

Fundamental vibration of molecular hydrogen

The fundamental ground tone vibration of H(2), HD, and D(2) is determined to an accuracy of 2×10(-4) cm(-1) from Doppler-free laser spectroscopy in the collisionless environment of a molecular beam. This rotationless vibrational splitting is derived from the combination difference between electronic excitation from the X(1)Σ(g)(+), v=0, and v=1 levels to a common EF(1)Σ(g)(+), v=0 level. Agreement within 1σ between the experimental result and a full ab initio calculation provides a stringent test of quantum electrodynamics in a chemically bound system.

QED effects in molecules: test on rotational quantum states of H2

Quantum electrodynamic effects have been systematically tested in the progression of rotational quantum states in the X 1Σ(g)(+), v=0 vibronic ground state of molecular hydrogen. High-precision Doppler-free spectroscopy of the EF 1Σ(g)(+)-X 1Σ(g)(+) (0,0) band was performed with 0.005  cm(-1) accuracy on rotationally hot H2 (with rotational quantum states J up to 16). QED and relativistic contributions to rotational level energies as high as 0.13  cm(-1) are extracted, and are in perfect agreement with recent calculations of QED and high-order relativistic effects for the H2 ground state.

Improved laboratory values of the H2 Lyman and Werner lines for constraining time variation of the proton-to-electron mass ratio

Two distinct high-accuracy laboratory spectroscopic investigations of the H2 molecule are reported. Anchor lines in the EF1Sigmag+-X1Sigmag+ system are calibrated by two-photon deep-UV Doppler-free spectroscopy, while independent Fourier-transform spectroscopic measurements are performed that yield accurate spacings in the B1Sigmau+-EF1Sigmag+ and I1Pig-C1Piu systems. From combination differences accurate transition wavelengths for the B-X Lyman and the C-X Werner lines can be determined with accuracies better than approximately 5 x 10(-9), representing a major improvement over existing values. This metrology provides a practically exact database to extract a possible variation of the proton-to-electron mass ratio based on H2 lines in high-redshift objects. Moreover, it forms a rationale for equipping a future class of telescopes, carrying 30-40 m dishes, with novel spectrometers of higher resolving powers.

A narrow-band injection-seeded pulsed titanium:sapphire oscillator-amplifier system with on-line chirp analysis for high-resolution spectroscopy

A narrow-band tunable injection-seeded pulsed titanium:sapphire laser system has been developed for application in high-resolution spectroscopic studies at the fundamental wavelengths in the near infrared as well as in the ultraviolet, deep ultraviolet, and extreme ultraviolet after upconversion. Special focus is on the quantitative assessment of the frequency characteristics of the oscillator-amplifier system on a pulse-to-pulse basis. Frequency offsets between continuous-wave seed light and the pulsed output are measured as well as linear chirps attributed mainly to mode pulling effects in the oscillator cavity. Operational conditions of the laser are found in which these offset and chirp effects are minimal. Absolute frequency calibration at the megahertz level of accuracy is demonstrated on various atomic and molecular resonance lines.
