Ultrafast Raman laser mode-locked by nanotubes

1.7 µm - 1.73 µm tunable ultrafast Raman fiber laser pumped by 1.6 µm dissipative soliton pulses

Here, we report an all-fiber tunable ultrafast Raman laser synchronously pumped by a home-made 1.6 µm dissipative soliton (DS) picosecond (ps) laser, which produces Stokes light beyond 1.7 µm. The Raman gain medium is a segment of highly germanium-doped (Ge-doped) fiber offering a high Raman gain coefficient at the target wavelength. Once the Raman conversion cavity is synchronized with the pump light, a stable 1.7 µm Raman laser (the first Stokes light) can be obtained at a low pump threshold. The maximum output power of the 1.7 µm Raman laser can reach ∼ 22.62 mW. The wavelength tuning operation is independent of tunable pump source and intra-cavity filter. By adjusting the intra-cavity delay line simply, the different spectral component within the broad Raman gain bandwidth can be selectively synchronized with the pump light so that the Raman laser wavelength can be tuned continuously from 1702.6 nm ∼ 1728.84 nm. This tunable 1.7 µm waveband ultrafast laser will have potential applications in multiphoton microscopy for e.g. deep bio-imaging.

Cascaded nonlinear optical gain modulation for coherent femtosecond pulse generation

Nonlinear optical gain modulation (NOGM) is a method to generate high performance ultrafast pulses with wavelength versatility. Here we demonstrate coherent femtosecond Raman pulse generation through cascaded NOGM process experimentally. Two single-frequency seed lasers (1121 and 1178 nm) are gain-modulated by 117 nJ 1064 nm picosecond pulses in a Raman fiber amplifier. Second-order (1178 nm) Stokes pulses are generated, which have a pulse energy of 76 nJ (corresponding to an optical conversion efficiency of 65%) with a pulse duration of 621 fs (after compression). Dynamic evolution of both pump and cascaded Stokes pulses within the Raman amplifier are investigated by numerical simulations. The influences of pump pulse duration and energy are studied in detail numerically. Moreover, the simulations reveal that NOGM pulses with higher energy and shorter pulse duration could be obtained by limiting the impact of walk-off effect between pump and Raman pulses. This approach can offer a high energy and wavelength-agile ultrafast source for various applications such as optical metrology and biomedical imagining.

Photonic device combined optical microfiber coupler with saturable-absorption materials and its application in mode-locked fiber laser

We demonstrated a mode-locked fiber laser based on a novel photonic device that combined optical microfiber coupler (OMC) and saturable absorption materials. The stable ultrafast laser was formed based on the interaction between the deposited Indium Antimonide (InSb) and the evanescent field on OMC. Different from optical microfiber (OM), OMC can directly output the mode-locked laser without additional beam splitting devices, which further improves the integrated characteristics of the fiber laser. The pulse duration of the output pulse is 405 fs at the central wavelength of 1560 nm. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that optical microfiber coupler based saturable absorber (OMC-SA) for mode-locked fiber laser is demonstrated.

High-Power Large-Energy Raman Soliton Generations Within a Mode-Locked Yb-Doped Fiber Laser Based on High-Damage-Threshold CVD-MoS2 as Modulator

In our work, based on a high-damage-threshold MoS₂ saturable absorber (SA), high-power intra-cavity Raman solitons within a passively mode-locked Yb-doped fiber laser were demonstrated successfully for the first time. The damage threshold of the MoS₂ SA was as high as ~0.48 J/cm². By adjusting the polarization states, stable single- or dual-pulse Raman soliton operations were obtained. The maximum average output power for single-pulse and dual-pulse Raman soliton operations was 80.11 and 89.33 mW, respectively. Our experiment results show significant enhancement in comparison with previous works, which provides fundamental guidance for future designs of high-power, large-energy, intra-cavity Raman soliton generations based on two-dimensional materials as SAs.

Raman dissipative soliton fiber laser mode locked by a nonlinear optical loop mirror

Raman dissipative soliton is generated in a mode locked polarization maintaining fiber laser with a nonlinear optical loop mirror. Ultrafast Raman laser with a repetition rate of 1.23 MHz is obtained. Signal to noise ratio of the radio frequency spectrum of the Raman dissipative soliton is as high as 85 dB. As the pump power increasing, the pulse energy and the spectral width increase, while the pulse width decreases. The highest pulse energy and lowest pulse width is 1.23 nJ and 63 ps, respectively. It is the first report of Raman dissipative soliton generation from an all polarization maintaining mode locked fiber laser to the best of our knowledge. This configuration provides a method to obtain linearly-polarized ultrafast laser at flexible wavelengths.

Wavelength and pulse duration tunable ultrafast fiber laser mode-locked with carbon nanotubes

Ultrafast lasers with tunable parameters in wavelength and time domains are the choice of light source for various applications such as spectroscopy and communication. Here, we report a wavelength and pulse-duration tunable mode-locked Erbium doped fiber laser with single wall carbon nanotube-based saturable absorber. An intra-cavity tunable filter is employed to continuously tune the output wavelength for 34 nm (from 1525 nm to 1559 nm) and pulse duration from 545 fs to 6.1 ps, respectively. Our results provide a novel light source for various applications requiring variable wavelength or pulse duration.

Raman dissipative soliton fiber laser pumped by an ASE source

The mode locking of a Raman fiber laser with an amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) pump source is investigated for performance improvement. Raman dissipative solitons with a compressed pulse duration of 1.05 ps at a repetition rate of 2.47 MHz are generated by utilizing nonlinear polarization rotation and all-fiber Lyot filter. A signal-to-noise ratio as high as 85 dB is measured in a radio-frequency spectrum, which suggests excellent temporal stability. Multiple-pulse operation with unique random static distribution is observed for the first time, to the best of our knowledge, at higher pump power in mode-locked Raman fiber lasers.

Fifty-ps Raman fiber laser with hybrid active-passive mode locking

Actively mode locked Raman lasing in a ring PM-fiber cavity pumped by a linearly polarized Yb-doped fiber laser is studied. At co-propagating pumping, a stochastic pulse with duration defined by the AOM switching time (~15 ns) is generated with the round-trip period. At counter-propagating pumping, one or several sub-ns pulses (within the AOM switching envelope) are formed. It has been found that the formation of such stable multi-pulse structure is defined by the single-pulse energy limit (~20 nJ) set by the second-order Raman generation. Adding a NPE-based saturable absorber in the actively mode locked cavity, results in sufficient shortening of the generated pulses both in single- and multi-pulse regimes (down to 50 ps). A model is developed adequately describing the regimes.

Cascaded generation of coherent Raman dissipative solitons

The cascaded generation of a conventional dissipative soliton (at 1020 nm) together with Raman dissipative solitons of the first (1065 nm) and second (1115 nm) orders inside a common fiber laser cavity is demonstrated experimentally and numerically. With sinusoidal (soft) spectral filtering, the generated solitons are mutually coherent at a high degree and compressible down to 300 fs. Numerical simulation shows that an even higher degree of coherence and shorter pulses could be achieved with step-like (hard) spectral filtering. The approach can be extended toward a high-order coherent Raman dissipative soliton source offering numerous applications such as frequency comb generation, pulse synthesis, biomedical imaging, and the generation of a coherent mid-infrared supercontinuum.

Actively mode-locked Raman fiber laser

Active mode-locking of Raman fiber laser is experimentally investigated for the first time. An all fiber connected and polarization maintaining loop cavity of ~500 m long is pumped by a linearly polarized 1120 nm Yb fiber laser and modulated by an acousto-optic modulator. Stable 2 ns width pulse train at 1178 nm is obtained with modulator opening time of > 50 ns. At higher power, pulses become longer, and second order Raman Stokes could take place, which however can be suppressed by adjusting the open time and modulation frequency. Transient pulse evolution measurement confirms the absence of relaxation oscillation in Raman fiber laser. Tuning of repetition rate from 392 kHz to 31.37 MHz is obtained with harmonic mode locking.

High-power synchronously pumped femtosecond Raman fiber laser

We report a high-power synchronously pumped femtosecond Raman fiber laser operating in the normal dispersion regime. The Raman laser is pumped by a picosecond Yb(3+)-doped fiber laser. It produces highly chirped pulses with energy up to 18 nJ, average power of 0.76 W and 88% efficiency. The pulse duration is measured to be 147 fs after external compression. We observed two different regimes of operation of the laser: coherent and noise-like regime. Both regimes were experimentally characterized. Numerical simulations are in a good agreement with experimental results.

Stable and wavelength-locked Q-switched narrow-linewidth Er:YAG laser at 1645 nm

A stable and wavelength-locked Q-switched narrow-linewidth Er:YAG laser with compact cavity structure, utilizing a volume Bragg grating (VBG) as a wavelength selector and a pump input mirror simultaneously, is reported. It yields high energy nanosecond pulse with pulse duration of 185 ns and pulse energy of 1.36 mJ at 1 kHz pulse repetition frequency for incident pump power of 21.6 W. The central wavelength of the Er:YAG laser is locked at 1645.3 nm with a spectral 3-dB linewidth of less than 0.08 nm, which coincides to the methane (CH4) absorption-line. The output has near diffraction-limited beam quality with M2 parameter of 1.08. Our work may provide an inroad for developing more miniaturized space-based integrated path differential absorption (IDPA) lidar transmitter.

Pulse dynamics in carbon nanotube mode-locked fiber lasers near zero cavity dispersion

We numerically and experimentally analyze the output characteristics and pulse dynamics of carbon nanotube mode-locked fiber lasers near zero cavity dispersion (from 0.02 to ~-0.02 ps(2)). We focus on such near zero dispersion cavities to reveal the dispersion related transition between different mode-locking regimes (such as soliton-like, stretched-pulse and self-similar regimes). Using our proposed model, we develop a nanotube-mode-locked fiber laser setup generating ~97 fs pulse which operates in the stretched-pulse regime. The corresponding experimental results and pulse dynamics are in good agreement with the numerical results. Also, the experimental results from soliton-like and self-similar regimes exhibit the same trends with simulations. Our study will aid design of different mode-locking regimes based on other new saturable absorber materials to achieve ultra-short pulse duration.

Science and technology roadmap for graphene, related two-dimensional crystals, and hybrid systems

We present the science and technology roadmap for graphene, related two-dimensional crystals, and hybrid systems, targeting an evolution in technology, that might lead to impacts and benefits reaching into most areas of society. This roadmap was developed within the framework of the European Graphene Flagship and outlines the main targets and research areas as best understood at the start of this ambitious project. We provide an overview of the key aspects of graphene and related materials (GRMs), ranging from fundamental research challenges to a variety of applications in a large number of sectors, highlighting the steps necessary to take GRMs from a state of raw potential to a point where they might revolutionize multiple industries. We also define an extensive list of acronyms in an effort to standardize the nomenclature in this emerging field.

Intermode beating mode-locking technique for O-band mixed-cascaded Raman fiber lasers

A novel intermode beating mode-locking (IBML) technique combined with a cascaded Raman process is proposed to mode-lock an O-band two-cascaded Raman fiber laser. Using a 980-m-long phosphosilicate fiber pumped by a 1064 nm laser, the second-order Raman oscillation at 1319 nm is generated by the mixed-cascaded Raman shifts of P2O5 and SiO2. By precisely matching the intermode beating frequencies of the 1064 nm pump laser and the second-order Raman cavity frequency, harmonic mode-locking at 1319 nm is initiated. The dynamic process of the IBML operation in the cascaded Raman laser is experimentally investigated. The 131st-order harmonic mode-locking with a repetition rate of 27.247 MHz is very stable with the radio-frequency (RF) signal-to-noise ratio of >56  dB and the RF supermode-suppression ratio of >43  dB. The mode-locked pulses with the square profile are confirmed as the noise-like pulses by an autocorrelator. The IBML technique, in combination with the cascaded Raman process, could offer an exciting new prospect for obtaining simple, compact, and arbitrary-wavelength mode-locked laser sources.

Stable high-energy Q-switched resonantly diode-pumped Er:YAG laser at 1645 nm

We demonstrate the generation of a stable high-energy Q-switched resonantly diode-pumped Er:YAG laser at 1645 nm in passive and active operation modes. For the passively Q-switched Er:YAG laser, the bi-layer graphene saturable absorber (SA), which was transferred onto the highly reflective cavity mirror by an improved method, was applied to deliver a stable pulse train with per-pulse energy of about 0.1 mJ. While in the active operation mode, the voltage-ON-type rubidium titanyl phosphate (RTP) Pockels cell as an electro-optic (EO) Q-switcher allows for the generation of a stable Q-switched pulse with per-pulse energy of up to 7.5 mJ. Our work may provide a basis for the development of a high-energy Er:YAG laser at 1645 nm to fulfill specific applications.

Raman fiber laser harmonically mode-locked by exploiting the intermodal beating of CW multimode pump source

We report here the first demonstration of a harmonic mode-locked Raman fiber laser using the intermodal beating of a continuous-wave (CW) multiple-longitudinal-mode pump laser. By matching the Raman-cavity round-trip frequency with the intermodal-beating one of a 1064 nm CW pump source, harmonic mode-locking in phosphosilicate Raman fiber laser is stably initiated at the first-order Stokes of 1239.5 nm, and generates rectangular-shape nanosecond pulses with the pulse energy up to 4.25 nJ. Using the new type of mode-locking, the harmonic order can be discretely tuned from 78 th- to 693 rd-order, and the cavity supermode is suppressed up to 51.1 dB with the signal-to-noise ratio of more than 65 dB.

Spectrum-, pulsewidth-, and wavelength-switchable all-fiber mode-locked Yb laser with fiber based birefringent filter

We examined methods of controlling the pulse duration, spectral width and wavelength of the output from an all-fiber Yb laser mode-locked by carbon nanotubes. It is shown that a segment of polarization maintaining (PM) fiber inserted into a standard single mode fiber based laser cavity can function as a spectral selective filter. Adjustment of the length of the PM fiber from 1 to 2 m led to a corresponding variation in the pulse duration from 2 to 3.8 ps, the spectral bandwidth of the laser output changes from 0.15 to 1.26 nm. Laser output wavelength detuning within up to 5 nm was demonstrated with a fixed length of the PM fiber by adjustment of the polarization controller.
