Temporal soliton excitation in an ε-near-zero plasmonic metamaterial

Tunable couplings between location-insensitive emitters mediated by an epsilon-near-zero plasmonic waveguide

This work demonstrates the efficient tuning of incoherent and coherent coupling between emitters embedded in an epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) waveguide coated with a multilayer graphene. As a result, a tunable two-qubit quantum phase gate based on the ENZ waveguide is realized at the cutoff frequency. Furthermore, due to the vanishingly small permittivity of the ENZ waveguide, all incoherent coupling between any two identical emitters located in the central area of the slit approaches a maximum, enabling near-ideal bipartite and multipartite entanglement. The coherent coupling between emitters is much larger at an operating frequency far from the ENZ resonance frequency than at the cutoff frequency, and the coherent coupling and resulting energy transfer efficiency can also be effectively tuned by the Fermi level of graphene. These results demonstrate an efficiently tunable electro-optical platform for quantum devices.

Enhancement and redshift of vortex harmonic radiation in epsilon-near-zero materials

The harmonic radiation from a vortex laser field interacting with an epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) material is numerically investigated via solving the Maxwell-paradigmatic-Kerr equations. For a laser field of long duration, the harmonics up to the seventh-order can be generated with a low laser intensity (∼10⁹ W/cm²). Moreover, the intensities of high order vortex harmonics at the ENZ frequency are higher than at other frequency points due to the ENZ field enhancement effects. Interestingly, for a laser field of short duration, the obvious frequency redshift occurs beyond enhancement in high order vortex harmonic radiation. The reason is that the strong change of the laser waveform propagating in the ENZ material and the non-constant field enhancement factor around the ENZ frequency. Because the topological number of harmonic radiation is linearly proportional to its harmonic order, the high order vortex harmonics with redshift still possess the exact harmonic orders indicated by the transverse electric field distribution of each harmonic.

Resonance energy transfer and quantum entanglement mediated by epsilon-near-zero and other plasmonic waveguide systems

The resonance energy transfer and entanglement between two-level quantum emitters are typically limited to sub-wavelength distances due to the inherently short-range nature of the dipole-dipole interactions. Moreover, the entanglement of quantum systems is hard to preserve for a long time period due to decoherence and dephasing mainly caused by radiative and nonradiative losses. In this work, we outperform the aforementioned limitations by presenting efficient long-range inter-emitter entanglement and large enhancement of resonance energy transfer between two optical qubits mediated by epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) and other plasmonic waveguide types, such as V-shaped grooves and cylindrical nanorods. More importantly, we explicitly demonstrate that the ENZ waveguide resonant energy transfer and entanglement performance drastically outperforms the other waveguide systems. Only the excited ENZ mode has an infinite phase velocity combined with a strong and homogeneous electric field distribution, which leads to a giant energy transfer and efficient entanglement independent of the emitters' separation distances and nanoscale positions in the ENZ nanowaveguide, an advantageous feature that can potentially accommodate multi-qubit entanglement. Moreover, the transient entanglement can be further improved and become almost independent of the detrimental decoherence effect when an optically active (gain) medium is embedded inside the ENZ waveguide. We also present that efficient steady-state entanglement can be achieved by using a coherent external pumping scheme. Finally, we report a practical way to detect the steady-state entanglement by computing the second-order correlation function. The presented findings stress the importance of plasmonic ENZ waveguides in the design of the envisioned on-chip quantum communication and information processing plasmonic nanodevices.

Graphene patterns supported terahertz tunable plasmon induced transparency

The tunable plasmonic induced transparency has been theoretically investigated based on graphene patterns/SiO₂/Si/polymer multilayer structure in the terahertz regime, including the effects of graphene Fermi level, structural parameters and operation frequency. The results manifest that obvious Fano peak can be observed and efficiently modulated because of the strong coupling between incident light and graphene pattern structures. As Fermi level increases, the peak amplitude of Fano resonance increases, and the resonant peak position shifts to high frequency. The amplitude modulation depth of Fano curves is about 40% on condition that the Fermi level changes in the scope of 0.2-1.0 eV. With the distance between cut wire and double semi-circular patterns increases, the peak amplitude and figure of merit increases. The results are very helpful to develop novel graphene plasmonic devices (e.g. sensors, modulators, and antenna) and find potential applications in the fields of biomedical sensing and wireless communications.

Tunable nonlinear coherent perfect absorption with epsilon-near-zero plasmonic waveguides

We propose a scheme to realize nonlinear coherent perfect absorption (CPA) at the nanoscale using epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) plasmonic waveguides. The general conditions to achieve CPA in a linear ENZ plasmonic waveguide are analyzed and presented. The proposed ENZ waveguides support an effective ENZ response at their cutoff frequency, where the CPA effect occurs under the illumination of two counterpropagating plane waves with equal amplitudes and appropriate phase distributions. In addition, the strong and uniform field enhancement inside the nanochannels of the waveguides at the ENZ resonance can efficiently boost Kerr nonlinearities, resulting in a new all-optical switching intensity-dependent CPA phenomenon that can be tunable with ultrafast speed. The proposed free-standing ENZ structures combine third-order nonlinear functionality with standing wave CPA interference effects in a nanoscale plasmonic configuration, thus leading to a novel degree of tunable light-matter interactions achieved in subwavelength regions. Our findings provide a new platform to efficiently excite nonlinear phenomena at the nanoscale and design tunable coherent perfect absorbers.

Controlling collective spontaneous emission with plasmonic waveguides

We demonstrate a plasmonic route to control the collective spontaneous emission of two-level quantum emitters. Superradiance and subradiance effects are observed over distances comparable to the operating wavelength inside plasmonic nanochannels. These plasmonic waveguides can provide an effective epsilon-near-zero operation in their cut-off frequency and Fabry-Pérot resonances at higher frequencies. The related plasmonic resonant modes are found to efficiently enhance the constructive (superradiance) or destructive (subradiance) interference between different quantum emitters located inside the waveguides. By increasing the number of emitters located in the elongated plasmonic channel, the superradiance effect is enhanced at the epsilon-near-zero operation, leading to a strong coherent increase in the collective spontaneous emission rate. In addition, the separation distance between neighboring emitters and their emission wavelengths can be changed to dynamically control the collective emission properties of the plasmonic system. It is envisioned that the dynamic modification between quantum superradiant and subradiant modes will find applications in quantum entanglement of qubits, low-threshold nanolasers and efficient sensors.

All-optical modulation in wavelength-sized epsilon-near-zero media

We investigate the interaction of two pulses (pump and probe) scattered by a nonlinear epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) slab whose thickness is comparable with the ENZ wavelength. We show that when the probe has a narrow spectrum localized around the ENZ wavelength, its transmission is dramatically affected by the intensity of the pump. Conversely, if the probe is not in the ENZ regime, its propagation is not noticeably affected by the pump. Such all-optical modulation is due to the oversensitive character of the ENZ regime, and it is so efficient that it even occurs in a wavelength thick slab.

Enhanced four-wave mixing with nonlinear plasmonic metasurfaces

Plasmonic metasurfaces provide an effective way to increase the efficiency of several nonlinear processes while maintaining nanoscale dimensions. In this work, nonlinear metasurfaces based on film-coupled silver nanostripes loaded with Kerr nonlinear material are proposed to achieve efficient four-wave mixing (FWM). Highly localized plasmon resonances are formed in the nanogap between the metallic film and nanostripes. The local electric field is dramatically enhanced in this subwavelength nanoregion. These properties combined with the relaxed phase matching condition due to the ultrathin area lead to a giant FWM efficiency, which is enhanced by nineteen orders of magnitude compared to a bare silver screen. In addition, efficient visible and low-THz sources can be constructed based on the proposed nonlinear metasurfaces. The FWM generated coherent wave has a directional radiation pattern and its output power is relatively insensitive to the incident angles of the excitation sources. This radiated power can be further enhanced by increasing the excitation power. The dielectric nonlinear material placed in the nanogap is mainly responsible for the ultrastrong FWM response. Compact and efficient wave mixers and optical sources spanning different frequency ranges are envisioned to be designed based on the proposed nonlinear metasurface designs.
