Group velocity of light in internal conical refraction

We calculated the group velocity of light in internal conical refraction in a biaxial crystal as a function of the direction of the electric displacement vector, or the vibration direction, of its carrier wave. Our method represents group velocity through the electromagnetic fields of light, rather than its wave normal or ray direction. The travel time of a light pulse traversing a parallel plate biaxial crystal in internal conical refraction is found to vary as a sinusoidal function of twice the vibration angle of the light wave. Our method distinguishes the four directions of the two optic axes in monoclinic and triclinic crystals. Numerical examples are given for K N b O 3 at the wavelength of 400 nm, and for S n 2 P 2 S 6 at the wavelength of 550 nm.

Partially coherent conical refraction promises new counter-intuitive phenomena

In this paper, we extend the paraxial conical refraction model to the case of the partially coherent light using the unified optical coherence theory. We demonstrate the decomposition of conical refraction correlation functions into well-known conical refraction coherent modes for a Gaussian Schell-model source. Assuming randomness of the electrical field phase of the input beam, we reformulated and significantly simplified the rigorous conical refraction theory. This approach allows us to consider the propagation of light through a conical refraction crystal in exactly the same way as in the classical case of coherent radiation. Having this in hand, we derive analytically the conical refraction intensity both in the focal plane and in the far field, which allows us to explain and rigorously justify earlier experimental findings and predict new phenomena. The last include the counterintuitive effect of narrowing of the conical refraction ring width, disappearance of the dark Poggendorff’s ring in the Lloyd’s plane, and shift of Raman spots for the low-coherent conical refraction light. We also demonstrate a universal power-law dependence of conical refraction cones coherence degree on the input correlation length and diffraction-free propagation of the low-coherent conical refraction light in the far field.

Conical refraction output from a Nd:YVO4 laser with an intracavity conerefringent element

A conical refraction (CR) laser based on an a-cut Nd:YVO₄ laser was demonstrated. By using a KGW crystal as a CR element, a typical laser with a Gaussian intensity output profile was transformed into a laser with conically refracted output. The CR laser delivered 220 mW of output power for 500 mW of pump power. The separation of the laser gain medium and the CR element reduced the complexity of the pumping scheme, and resulted in the generation of well-behaved CR laser beams with outstanding quality. The presented approach is power scalable and offers a unique possibility of studying the transformation of a Gaussian laser mode into a conically refracted one in a laser cavity.

3D micromanipulation at low numerical aperture with a single light beam: the focused-Bessel trap

Full-three-dimensional (3D) manipulation of individual glass beads with radii in the range of 2-8 μm is experimentally demonstrated by using a single Bessel light beam focused through a low-numerical-aperture lens (NA=0.40). Although we have a weight-assisted trap with the beam propagating upward, we obtain a stable equilibrium position well away from the walls of the sample cell, and we are able to move the particle across the entire cell in three dimensions. A theoretical analysis for the optical field and trapping forces along the lateral and axial directions is presented for the focused-Bessel trap. This trap offers advantages for 3D manipulation, such as an extended working distance, a large field of view, and reduced aberrations.

On the dual-cone nature of the conical refraction phenomenon

In conical refraction (CR), a focused Gaussian input beam passing through a biaxial crystal and parallel to one of the optic axes is transformed into a pair of concentric bright rings split by a dark (Poggendorff) ring at the focal plane. Here, we show the generation of a CR transverse pattern that does not present the Poggendorff fine splitting at the focal plane, i.e., it forms a single light ring. This light ring is generated from a nonhomogeneously polarized input light beam obtained by using a spatially inhomogeneous polarizer that mimics the characteristic CR polarization distribution. This polarizer allows modulating the relative intensity between the two CR light cones in accordance with the recently proposed dual-cone model of the CR phenomenon. We show that the absence of interfering rings at the focal plane is caused by the selection of one of the two CR cones.
