Direct Laser Writing of Fluorescent Silver Nanoclusters: A Review of Methods and Applications

Metal nanoclusters (NCs) are nanomaterials of size of less than 2 nm that exhibit a set of unique physical, chemical, optical, and electronic properties. Because of recent interest in NCs, a great deal of effort is being made to develop synthetic routes that allow control over the NC size, shape, geometry, and properties. Direct laser writing is one of the few synthesis methods that allow the generation of photostable NCs with high quantum yield in a highly controlled fashion. A key advantage of laser-written NCs is the ability to create easy-to-use solid-state devices for a range of applications. This review will present necessary background and recent advances in laser writing of silver NCs and their applications in different solid-state matrixes such as glass, zeolites, and polymer substrate. This topic will be of interest to researchers in the fields of materials science, optics and photonics, chemistry, and biomedical sciences.

Two-color pump-probe interferometry of ultra-fast light-matter interaction

Two-color side-view probing of light-matter interaction from minute focal volume of a tightly focused fs-laser pump pulse reveals charge dynamics with high 0.9 μm optical resolution and approximately ~45fs temporal resolution defined by pulse duration. Use of two colors is advantageous for probing optically excited plasma regions with different density. Holographical digital focusing and spatial filtering were implemented to obtain the same resolution images for subsequent Fourier analysis. Fast plasma density decay with time constant ~150 fs was resolved and is consistent with self-trapping. Potential applications of an optical control over light-induced defects with deep-sub-wavelength resolution is discussed.

Sub-diffraction-limited fluorescent patterns by tightly focusing polarized femtosecond vortex beams in a silver-containing glass

We report that the shape and size of fluorescent patterns can be controlled by the focused laser intensity distribution, which depends on irradiation conditions as well as on the spin and orbital angular momenta being carried by light, inducing the formation of silver cluster patterns in a silver-containing zinc phosphate glass. In particular, we demonstrate that sub-diffraction-limited inner structures of fluorescent patterns can be generated by direct laser writing (DLW) with tightly focused femtosecond laser vortex beams as Laguerre-Gauss modes (LG0l) with linear and left-handed circular polarizations. We believe this technique, further combined with dual-color DLW, can be useful and powerful for developing structured light enabled nanostructures.
