Extracting Superficial Scattering by Q-Sensing Technique

Optical properties determine how light interacts with biological tissues. The current methods for measuring these optical properties are influenced by both deep and superficial skin layers. Polarization-based methods have been proposed in order to determine the influence of deep layer scattering. Polarized light allows for the separation of ballistic photons from diffuse ones, enhancing image contrast and resolution while providing additional tissue information. The Q-sensing technique captures co-polarizedI ∥ $$ \left({I}_{\parallel}\right) $$ and cross-polarizedI ⊥ $$ \left({I}_{\perp}\right) $$ signals, making it possible to isolate the superficial scattering. However, the random structure of tissues leads to rapid depolarization of the polarized light. Detecting where the light becomes depolarized aids in sensing abnormalities within the tissues. Hence, this research focuses on identifying where depolarization occurs within the tissue. Tissue-mimicking phantoms, simulating the optical properties of biological tissues, are created to measure depolarization at various thicknesses. Experimental findings are validated with a Monte Carlo simulation, modeling polarized light behavior through the polydisperse tissue (as the tissue scatterers are heterogeneous in size). Additionally, the research demonstrates how polarized light can extract the optical properties of the medium.

Dose Analysis of Photobiomodulation Therapy in Stomatology

The penetration depth and the power density of photobiomodulation (PBM) in human tissue under real conditions remain unclear to date. A novel quantitative measurement method was proposed in this study. This study aimed to design a noninvasive measurement system for the quantitative calculation of PBM dose on the attached gingiva. A flexible facial fixture appliance (FFFA) and nine piece detectors were mounted on the retainer to detect the real dose of 660 and 830 nm lasers on the attached gingiva. In addition, the angular distribution of light scattering and the light propagation in the biotissue were obtained. Two cases (a female and a male) are presented in this study. Experimental results demonstrated that the real power density of laser in the target tissue can be measured exactly after the laser light penetrates the orbicularis oris. Simulation results match with real conditions. Conversely, slight differences in power density are observed in the tissue radiated with collimated and uncollimated laser. The proposed method can be used to calculate the real dose in the target tissue for stomatology and deep acupoint stimulation.

The Various Oximetric Techniques Used for the Evaluation of Blood Oxygenation

Adequate oxygen delivery to a tissue depends on sufficient oxygen content in arterial blood and blood flow to the tissue. Oximetry is a technique for the assessment of blood oxygenation by measurements of light transmission through the blood, which is based on the different absorption spectra of oxygenated and deoxygenated hemoglobin. Oxygen saturation in arterial blood provides information on the adequacy of respiration and is routinely measured in clinical settings, utilizing pulse oximetry. Oxygen saturation, in venous blood (SvO₂) and in the entire blood in a tissue (StO₂), is related to the blood supply to the tissue, and several oximetric techniques have been developed for their assessment. SvO₂ can be measured non-invasively in the fingers, making use of modified pulse oximetry, and in the retina, using the modified Beer–Lambert Law. StO₂ is measured in peripheral muscle and cerebral tissue by means of various modes of near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), utilizing the relative transparency of infrared light in muscle and cerebral tissue. The primary problem of oximetry is the discrimination between absorption by hemoglobin and scattering by tissue elements in the attenuation measurement, and the various techniques developed for isolating the absorption effect are presented in the current review, with their limitations.

Self-Calibration Phenomenon for Near-Infrared Clinical Measurements: Theory, Simulation, and Experiments

An irradiated turbid medium scatters the light in accordance to its optical properties. Near-infrared (NIR) clinical methods, which are based on spectral-dependent absorption, suffer from an inherent error due to spectral-dependent scattering. We present here a unique spatial point, that is, iso-pathlength (IPL) point, on the surface of a tissue at which the intensity of re-emitted light remains constant. This scattering-indifferent point depends solely on the medium geometry. On the basis of this natural phenomenon, we suggest a novel optical method for self-calibrated clinical measurements. We found that the IPL point exists in both cylindrical and semi-infinite tissue geometries (Supporting Information, Video file). Finally, in vivo human finger and mice measurements are used to validate the crossing point between the intensity profiles of two wavelengths. Hence, measurements at the IPL point yield an accurate absorption assessment while eliminating the scattering dependence. This finding can be useful for oxygen saturation determination, NIR spectroscopy, photoplethysmography measurements, and a wide range of optical sensing methods for physiological aims.

Experimental results of full scattering profile from finger tissue-like phantom

Human tissue is one of the most complex optical media since it is turbid and nonhomogeneous. We suggest a new optical method for sensing physiological tissue state, based on the collection of the ejected light at all exit angles, to receive the full scattering profile. We built a unique set-up for noninvasive encircled measurement. We use a laser, a photodetector and finger tissues-mimicking phantoms presenting different optical properties. Our method reveals an isobaric point, which is independent of the optical properties. We compared the new finger tissues-like phantoms to others samples and found the linear dependence between the isobaric point's angle and the exact tissue geometry. These findings can be useful for biomedical applications such as non-invasive and simple diagnostic of the fingertip joint, ear lobe and pinched tissues.
