High-speed mid-infrared graphene electro-optical modulator based on suspended germanium slot waveguides

The mid-infrared (MIR) region is attracting increasing interest for on-chip synchronous detection and free-space optical (FSO) communications. For such applications, a high-performance electro-optical modulator is a crucial component. In this regard, we propose and investigate a graphene-based electro-absorption modulator (EAM) and microring modulator (MRM) using the suspended germanium waveguide platform. The modulators are designed for the second atmospheric window (8 to 12 µm). The incorporation of double-layer graphene on the suspended slot waveguide structure allows for the significant enhancement of light-graphene interaction, theoretically achieving a 3-dB bandwidth as high as 78 GHz. The EAM shows a calculated modulation depth of 0.022-0.045 dB/µm for the whole operation wavelength range. The MRM exhibits a calculated extinction ratio as high as 68.9 dB and a modulation efficiency of 0.59 V·cm around 9 µm. These modulators hold promise for constructing high-speed FSO communication and on-chip spectroscopic detection systems in the MIR atmospheric window.

Broadband integrated racetrack ring resonators for long-wave infrared photonics

Long-wave infrared photonics is an exciting research field meant to revolutionize our daily life by means of key advances in several domains including communications, imaging systems, medical care, environmental monitoring, or multispectral chemical sensing, among others. For this purpose, integrated photonics is particularly promising owing to its compactness, mass fabrication, and energy-efficient characteristics. We present in this Letter, for the first time to the best of our knowledge, broadband integrated racetrack ring resonators operating within the crucial molecular fingerprint region. Devices show an operation bandwidth of Δλ≈900  nm with a central wavelength of λ≈8  μm, a quality factor of Q≈3200, and an extinction ratio of ER≈10  dB around the critical coupling condition. These resonant structures establish the basis of a new generation of integrated building blocks for long-wave infrared photonics that opens the route towards miniaturized multitarget molecule detection systems.

Introduction to Photonics: Principles and the Most Recent Applications of Microstructures

Light has found applications in data transmission, such as optical fibers and waveguides and in optoelectronics. It consists of a series of electromagnetic waves, with particle behavior. Photonics involves the proper use of light as a tool for the benefit of humans. It is derived from the root word “photon”, which connotes the tiniest entity of light analogous to an electron in electricity. Photonics have a broad range of scientific and technological applications that are practically limitless and include medical diagnostics, organic synthesis, communications, as well as fusion energy. This will enhance the quality of life in many areas such as communications and information technology, advanced manufacturing, defense, health, medicine, and energy. The signal transmission methods used in wireless photonic systems are digital baseband and RoF (Radio-over-Fiber) optical communication. Microwave photonics is considered to be one of the emerging research fields. The mid infrared (mid-IR) spectroscopy offers a principal means for biological structure analysis as well as nonintrusive measurements. There is a lower loss in the propagations involving waveguides. Waveguides have simple structures and are cost-efficient in comparison with optical fibers. These are important components due to their compactness, low profile, and many advantages over conventional metallic waveguides. Among the waveguides, optofluidic waveguides have been found to provide a very powerful foundation for building optofluidic sensors. These can be used to fabricate the biosensors based on fluorescence. In an optical fiber, the evanescent field excitation is employed to sense the environmental refractive index changes. Optical fibers as waveguides can be used as sensors to measure strain, temperature, pressure, displacements, vibrations, and other quantities by modifying a fiber. For some application areas, however, fiber-optic sensors are increasingly recognized as a technology with very interesting possibilities. In this review, we present the most common and recent applications of the optical fiber-based sensors. These kinds of sensors can be fabricated by a modification of the waveguide structures to enhance the evanescent field; therefore, direct interactions of the measurand with electromagnetic waves can be performed. In this research, the most recent applications of photonics components are studied and discussed.

Mid-infrared high-Q germanium microring resonator

Germanium is a promising material for mid-infrared (MIR) integrated photonics due to its CMOS compatibility and wide transparency window covering the fingerprint spectral region (2-15 μm). However, due to the limited quality and structural configurations of conventional germanium-based integration platforms, the realization of high-Q on-chip germanium resonators in the MIR spectral range remains challenging to date. Here we experimentally demonstrate an air-cladding MIR germanium microring resonator with, to the best of our knowledge, the highest loaded Q-factor of ∼57,000 across all germanium-based integration platforms to date. A propagation loss of 5.4 dB/cm and a high extinction ratio of 22 dB approaching the critical coupling condition are experimentally realized. These are enabled by our smart-cut methods for developing high-quality germanium-on-insulator wafers and by implementing our suspended-membrane structure. Our high-Q germanium microring resonator is a promising step towards a number of on-chip applications in the MIR spectral range.

Suspended silicon waveguides for long-wave infrared wavelengths

In this Letter, we report suspended silicon waveguides operating at a wavelength of 7.67 μm with a propagation loss of 3.1±0.3  dB/cm. To our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of low-loss silicon waveguides at such a long wavelength, with loss comparable to other platforms that use more exotic materials. The suspended Si waveguide core is supported by a sub-wavelength grating that provides lateral optical confinement while also allowing access to the buried oxide layer so that it can be wet etched using hydrofluoric acid. We also demonstrate low-loss waveguide bends and s-bends.

Silicon ring resonator-coupled Mach-Zehnder interferometers for the Fano resonance in the mid-IR

We present ring resonator (RR)-coupled Mach-Zehnder interferometers (MZIs) based on silicon-on-insulator rib waveguides, operating around the mid-IR wavelength of 3.8 μm. A number of different photonic integrated devices have been designed and fabricated experimentally to obtain the asymmetric Fano resonances in the mid-IR. We have investigated the influence of the coupling efficiency between the RR and the MZI as well as the phase shift between the two arms of the MZI on the Fano-type resonance spectral features, in agreement with theoretical predictions. Finally, wavelength-dependent Fano transmittances have been successfully measured with insertion losses up to ∼1  dB and extinction ratios of ∼20  dB. A slope of sharp Fano resonances as high as -574.6/μm has been achieved and estimated to be 35.5% higher than the slope of single RR Lorentzian-type resonances.
