Zak phase induced multiband waveguide by two-dimensional photonic crystals

Active control of resonant asymmetric transmission based on topological edge states in paired photonic crystals with a Ge2Sb2Te5 film

For many high-precision applications such as filtering, sensing, and photodetection, active control of resonant responses of metasurfaces is crucial. Herein, we demonstrate that active control of resonant asymmetric transmission can be realized based on the topological edge state (TES) of an ultra-thin G e 2 S b 2 T e 5 (GST) film in a photonic crystal grating (PCG). The PCG is composed of two pairs of one-dimensional photonic crystals (PCs) separated by a GST film. The phase change of the GST film re-distributes the field distributions of the PCG; thus active control of narrowband asymmetric transmission can be achieved due to the switch of the on-off state of the TES. According to multipole decompositions, the appearance and disappearance of the synergistically reduced dipole modes are responsible for the high-contrast asymmetric transmission of the PCG. In addition, the asymmetric transmission performances are robust to the variation of structural parameters, and good unidirectional transmission performances with a high peak transmission and high contrast ratio can be balanced, as the layer number of the two PCs is set as four. By changing the crystallization fraction of GST, the peak transmission and peak contrast ratio of asymmetric transmission can be flexibly tuned with the resonance locations kept almost the same.

A Multi-Channel Frequency Router Based on an Optimization Algorithm and Dispersion Engineering

Integrated frequency routers, which can guide light with different frequencies to different output ports, are an important kind of nanophotonic device. However, frequency routers with both a compact size and multiple channels are difficult to realize, which limits the application of these frequency routers in nanophotonics. Here, a kind of bandgap optimization algorithm, which consists of the finite element method and topology optimization, is proposed to design a multi-channel frequency router. Channels supporting photonic edge states with different frequencies are built through the synthetic dimension of translational deformation. Due to the help of the developed optimization algorithms, the number of channels and output ports can be increased up to nine while maintaining ultracompact device size. The device operates within a working band of 0.585-0.665 c/a, corresponding to 1.504-1.709 μm when the lattice constant is set as 1 μm, covering the telecom wavelength of 1.55 μm. The average crosstalk is about -11.49 dB. The average extinction ratio is around 16.18 dB. Because the bus of the device can be regarded as a part of a topological rainbow, the results show that the structure is robust to fabrication errors. This method is general, which can be used for different materials and different frequency ranges. The all-dielectric planar configuration of our router is compact, robust, and easy to integrate, providing a new method for on-chip multi-channel broadband information processing.

Lithography-free tunable absorber at visible region via one-dimensional photonic crystals consisting of an α-MoO3 layer

Flexible control of light absorption within the lithography-free nanostructure is crucial for many polarization-dependent optical devices. Herein, we demonstrated that the lithography-free tunable absorber (LTA) can be realized by using two one-dimensional (1D) photonic crystals (PCs) consisting of an α-MoO₃ layer at visible region. The two 1D PCs have different bulk band properties, and the topological interface state-induced light absorption enhancement of α-MoO₃ can be realized as the α-MoO₃ thin film is inserted at the interface between the two 1D PCs. The resonant cavity model is proposed to evaluate the anisotropic absorption performances of the LTA, and the results are in good agreement with those of the transfer matrix method (TMM). The absorption efficiency of the LTA can be tailored by the number of the period of the two PCs, and the larger peak absorption is the direct consequence of the larger field enhancement factor (FEF) within the α-MoO₃ layer. In addition, near-perfect absorption can be achieved as the LTA is operated at the over-coupled resonance. By varying the polarization angle, the absorption channels can be selected and the reflection response can be effectively modulated due to the excellent in-plane anisotropy of α-MoO₃.

Pulse Reshaping in Double-zero-index Photonic Crystals with Dirac-like-cone Dispersion

Triply-degenerate Dirac-like cone at the Brillouin zone center attracts much research interest in recent years. Whether the linear dispersion in such a Dirac-like cone reflects the same physics to Dirac cones at the Brillouin zone boundaries is still under investigation. In this manuscript, through microwave experiments and numerical simulations, we observe intriguing pulse reshaping phenomena in double-zero-index photonic crystals, which cannot be fully understood from their close-to-zero effective parameters. A reshaped pulse, with frequency components close to the Dirac frequency filtered, is propagating at a constant group velocity while part of these filtered frequencies appears at a much later time. In time domain measurements, we find a way to separate the effect between the linear dispersion and the extra flat band in Dirac-like cone to have a better understanding of the underneath physics. We succeed in obtaining the group velocity inside a double-zero-index photonic crystal and good consistence can be found between experiments, numerical simulations and band diagram calculations.
