Extension of water-window harmonic cutoff by laser defocusing-assisted phase matching

Generation of high-order harmonics and attosecond pulses in the water window via nonlinear propagation of a few-cycle laser pulse

We theoretically and computationally study the generation of high-order harmonics in the water window from a semi-infinite gas cell where a few-cycle, carrier-envelope-phase-controlled 1.7-µm driving laser pulse undergoes nonlinear propagation via optical Kerr effect (self-focusing) and plasma defocusing. Our calculation shows that high harmonic signals are enhanced for extended propagation distances and furthermore, isolated attosecond pulses in the water window can be generated from the semi-infinite gas cell. This enhancement is attributed mainly to better phase matching for extended propagation distances achieved via nonlinear propagation and resulting intensity stabilization.

Role of the Porras factor in phase matching of high-order harmonic generation driven by focused few-cycle laser pulses

We investigate the role of the Porras factor (or laser focusing effect) on the macroscopic high-order harmonic generation (HHG) driven by a focused broadband few-cycle laser beam. By employing a non-adiabatic phase-matching analysis method, we reveal that phase mismatch due to the induced-dipole phase varies with the Porras factor, which is dominant in phase matching at low gas pressure. We also find that in a strongly ionized medium when gas pressure is high, the nonlinear propagation is dominated by a plasma effect such that the focusing effect is mitigated, resulting in similar poor phase matching of HHG regardless of the Porras factor. Our results are expected to assist experimentalists identifying optimal conditions for HHG using ultrashort laser pulses.

Theoretical Simulation of the High–Order Harmonic Generated from Neon Atom Irradiated by the Intense Laser Pulse

Based on the strong field approximation theory and numerical solution of Maxwell’s propagation equations, the high–order harmonic is generated from a neon (Ne) atom irradiated by a high–intensity laser pulse whose central wavelength is 800 nm. In the harmonic spectrum, it is found that in addition to the odd harmonics of the driving laser, a new frequency peak appeared. By examining the time–dependent behavior of the driving laser, it is found that the symmetry of the laser field is broken. We demonstrated that these new spectrum peaks are caused by the intensity reduction and frequency blue shift of the high–intensity laser during propagation. Our results reveal that it is feasible to modulate the harmonics of the specific energy to produce high–intensity harmonic emission by changing the gas density and the position of the gas medium interacting with the laser pulse.

Extension of the bright high-harmonic photon energy range via nonadiabatic critical phase matching

The concept of critical ionization fraction has been essential for high-harmonic generation, because it dictates the maximum driving laser intensity while preserving the phase matching of harmonics. In this work, we reveal a second, nonadiabatic critical ionization fraction, which substantially extends the phase-matched harmonic energy, arising because of the strong reshaping of the intense laser field in a gas plasma. We validate this understanding through a systematic comparison between experiment and theory for a wide range of laser conditions. In particular, the properties of the high-harmonic spectrum versus the laser intensity undergoes three distinctive scenarios: (i) coincidence with the single-atom cutoff, (ii) strong spectral extension, and (iii) spectral energy saturation. We present an analytical model that predicts the spectral extension and reveals the increasing importance of the nonadiabatic effects for mid-infrared lasers. These findings are important for the development of high-brightness soft x-ray sources for applications in spectroscopy and imaging.

Optimal generation and isolation of attosecond pulses in an overdriven ionized medium

We identify optimal conditions for the generation and isolation of attosecond pulses in an overdriven ionized medium. In a high-pressure and highly ionized gas, the spatiotemporal wavefront rotation of a driving laser can be optimized, leading to complete spatial separation of successive attosecond bursts in the far field. The resulting isolated attosecond pulses (IAPs) are much more divergent such that they are spatially separated from the driving laser in the far field. We show that the time delay of near-field harmonic emission along the radial distance determines the divergence of the attosecond burst in the far field. The generated IAPs are phase matched upon propagation in the second half of the gas medium. Validity of the generation scheme is tested at different carrier-envelope phases for a few-cycle laser pulse and by synthesizing the fundamental and its second harmonic field for a long-duration pulse.

Enhanced XUV harmonics generation from diatomic gases using two orthogonally polarized laser fields

Enhanced high repetition rate coherent extreme ultraviolet (XUV) harmonics represent efficient probe of electron dynamics in atoms, molecules and solids. In this work, we used orthogonally-polarized two-color laser field to generate strong even and odd high order harmonics from molecular gas targets. The dynamics of odd and even harmonics from O2, and N2 gases were investigated by employing single- and two-color laser fields using the fundamental radiation and second harmonic of 1030 nm, 37 fs, 50 kHz pulses. The relative efficiencies of harmonics were analyzed as a function of the thickness of the barium borate crystal used for second harmonic generation. Defocusing-assisted phase matching conditions were achieved in N2 gas for different groups of XUV harmonics.

Attosecond soft X-ray high harmonic generation

High harmonic generation (HHG) of an intense laser pulse is a highly nonlinear optical phenomenon that provides the only proven source of tabletop attosecond pulses, and it is the key technology in attosecond science. Recent developments in high-intensity infrared lasers have extended HHG beyond its traditional domain of the XUV spectral range (10-150 eV) into the soft X-ray regime (150 eV to 3 keV), allowing the compactness, stability and sub-femtosecond duration of HHG to be combined with the atomic site specificity and electronic/structural sensitivity of X-ray spectroscopy. HHG in the soft X-ray spectral region has significant differences from HHG in the XUV, which necessitate new approaches to generating and characterizing attosecond pulses. Here, we examine the challenges and opportunities of soft X-ray HHG, and we use simulations to examine the optimal generating conditions for the development of high-flux, attosecond-duration pulses in the soft X-ray spectral range. Application of optimized waveforms for enhancing high-harmonic yields in a three-color laser-field synthesizer

We apply the optimization method suggested by Jin et al. [Nat. Commun.5, 4003 (2014)24873949] to a three-color laser-field synthesizer in a recent experiment by Burger et al. [Opt. Express25(25), 31130 (2017)29245790] for efficient high-order harmonic generation (HHG). With the experimental laser parameters being precisely tuned according to those returned by the genetic optimization, the three-color waveform composed by a 790-nm laser with its second and third harmonic fields, can enhance the macroscopic HHG yields by one to two orders with only 80% pulse energy compared to the fundamental single-color field. We check that this enhancement can be realized for He or Ne gas at both low and high gas pressures. The optimized waveform enables the short-trajectory emissions dominant to facilitate the buildup of the harmonic field, which is revealed by analyzing the behaviors of electron trajectories and the time-frequency pictures of the single-atom and macroscopic HHG. We also optimize the two-color waveform consisting of the fundamental laser and its third harmonic field for the flexible choice in the experiment. This study provides with a practical route to implement the optimization technique in the experiment for the high-flux harmonic generation from the extreme ultraviolet to the X-rays.
