Control of transverse mode in a He-Ne laser using an astigmatic resonator

The realization of output of the controllable transverse mode in a laser resonator has always been the key problem in applications of lasers. At present, the theory of optical resonators for passive resonators is relatively mature, but the non-uniformity of gain media greatly affects the output of the laser transverse mode for astigmatic resonators in operation; especially for gas lasers, controllable high-order modes have not been studied. To realize the theory of an astigmatic passive resonator of a gas laser as a good approximation of an active resonator, this paper develops the theory of selecting the laser eigenmode through an astigmatic resonator, and verifies that the two-dimensional tilt of the cavity mirror can break the axial symmetry. Controllable output of the laser mode is realized in real time and conveniently for the first time, to the best of our knowledge. This scheme is not only common to all kinds of lasers, but also has important research significance for the high-order modes required for real-time and rapid regulation of gas lasers under operating conditions.

Micro-sized tunable liquid crystal optical filters

Liquid crystal arrayed microcavities (LCAM) is a new technology for ultra-narrow optical filtering (FWHM ∼0.1  nm) that uses picoliter volume Fabry-Perot-type optical cavities filled with liquid crystal for tuning. LCAMs are sub-nm spectral resolution filters, which utilize well-established laser writing, thin film deposition, and wafer manufacturing techniques. These filters are compact, robust, and inexpensive. Compact, high-resolution optical filters have applications, including biomedical imaging, chemical detection, and environmental monitoring. Here, we describe the LCAM design and initial performance metrics.

Synthetic gauge fields for light beams in optical resonators

A method to realize artificial magnetic fields for light waves trapped in passive optical cavities with anamorphic optical elements is theoretically proposed. In particular, when a homogeneous magnetic field is realized, a highly degenerate Landau-level structure for the frequency spectrum of the transverse resonator modes is obtained, corresponding to a cyclotron motion of the optical-cavity field. This can be probed by transient excitation of the passive optical resonator.

Photonic crystal-based flat lens integrated on a Bragg mirror for high-Q external cavity low noise laser

We demonstrate a high reflectivity (> 99%), low-loss (< 0.1%) and aberrations-free (2% of λ rms phase fluctuations) concave Bragg mirror (20mm radius of curvature) integrating a photonic crystal with engineered spherical phase and amplitude transfer functions, based on a III-V semiconductors flat photonics technology. This mirror design is of high interest for highly coherent high power stable external cavity semiconductor lasers, exhibiting very low noise. We design the photonic crystal for operation in the pass band. The approach incorporates spatial, spectral (filter bandwidth= 5nm) and polarization filtering capabilities. Thanks to the mirror, a compact single mode TEM(00) 2mm-long air gap high finesse (cold cavity Q-factor 10(6) - 10(7)) stable laser cavity is demonstrated with a GaAs-based quantum-wells 1/2-VCSEL gain structure at 1μm. Excellent laser performances are obtained in single frequency operation: low threshold density of 2kW/cm(2) with high differential efficiency (21%). And high spatial, temporal and polarization coherence: TEM(00) beam close to diffraction limit, linear light polarization (> 60dB), Side Mode Suppression Ratio > 46dB, relative intensity noise at quantum limit (< -150dB) in 1MHz-84GHz radio frequency range, and a theoretical linewidth fundamental limit at 10 Hz (Q-factor ∼ 3.10(13)).
