Abstract
We present a highly stable polarization-maintained supercontinuum (SC) using a setup solely based on ZBLAN (ZrF4-BaF2-LaF3-AlF3-NaF) fibers. The pumping source consists of a femtosecond master oscillator fiber amplifier based on thulium-doped ZBLAN fibers. It provides multi-watts of output power with the center wavelength of 1920 nm at 1 MHz repetition rate. The SC generated by pumping an elliptical core passive single-mode ZBLAN fiber spans from 350 nm to 4.5 µm and exhibits high stability. We characterized the SC pulse using sum-frequency cross-correlation frequency resolved optical gating.

Abstract
Supercontinuum (SC) can be generated directly from a random fiber laser (RFL). However, its spectral bandwidth and flatness need to be further optimized for many practical applications. To solve this issue, a RFL based on random distributed Rayleigh scattering in photonic crystal fiber is demonstrated for the first time in this paper. The experimental results revealed that compared with the traditional single or double clad fiber, photonic crystal fiber not only can provide random distributed feedback effectively, but is also a superior nonlinear medium for SC generation which can realize better spectral width and flatness. A flat SC covering 400 nm to 2300 nm is obtained directly from a RFL based on photonic crystal fiber and the corresponding 20 dB bandwidth is more than 1600 nm, which is the widest ever reported to the best of our knowledge. The optical rogue waves caused by solitonic collisions can explain the instability of the output pulses in the time domain. This work proves that photonic crystal fiber can be used in RFL to provide random distributed feedback as well as nonlinear medium for spectrum broadening, and the spectral width and flatness of the generated SC is as good as the conventional method of using a high peak power pulsed laser to pump a piece of photonic crystal fiber, which can greatly reduce the cost of the SC and enrich the research scope of SC as well as RFL.

Abstract
We present mid-infrared (MIR) supercontinuum generation in polarization-maintained ZBLAN fibers pumped by 2 µm femtosecond pulses from a Tm:YAP regenerative amplifier. A stable supercontinuum that spreads from 380 nm to 4 µm was generated by coupling only 0.5 µJ pulse energy into an elliptical core ZBLAN fiber. The supercontinuum was characterized using cross-correlation frequency-resolved optical gating (XFROG). The complex structure of the XFROG trace due to the pulse-to-pulse spectrum instability have been fixed by reducing the length of the applied fibers or improving the quality of the incident pulse spectrum.

Abstract
We unveil the relation between the linear Anderson localisation process and nonlinear modulation instability. Anderson localised modes are formed in certain temporal intervals due to the random background noise. Such localised modes seed the formation of solitary waves that will appear during the modulation instability process at those preferred intervals. Afterwards, optical-event horizon effects between dispersive waves and solitons produce an artificial collective acceleration that favours the collision of solitons, which could eventually lead to a rogue-soliton generation.

Abstract
Optical rogue waves are featured as the generation of high amplitude events at low probability in optical systems. Moreover, the formation of optical rogue waves is unpredictable and transient in photonic crystal fibers. In this paper, we put forward a method to generate high-intensity optical rogue waves in a more controlled way based on induced modulation instability, which can suppress the noise effect and hence play a leading role in the process of pulse evolution. Our numerical simulations indicate that the generation of rogue wave can be controlled when seeding at the optimal modulation frequency and the intensity of rogue wave can be enhanced with appropriate modulation depth. Further, high-intensity rogue wave can also be ejected in the fiber with a shorter propagation length by regulating the modulation depth. These results all provide a better understanding of optical rogue wave, which can contribute to the generation of tunable long-wavelength spectral components and selective excitation of mid-infrared supercontinuum.

Abstract
We introduce a general technique how to reveal in experiments of limited electrical bandwidth which is lower than the optical bandwidth of the optical signal under study, whether the statistical properties of the light source obey Gaussian distribution or mode correlations do exist. To do that one needs to perform measurements by decreasing the measurement bandwidth. We develop a simple model of bandwidth-limited measurements and predict universal laws how intensity probability density function and intensity auto-correlation function of ideal completely stochastic source of Gaussian statistics depend on limited measurement bandwidth and measurement noise level. Results of experimental investigation are in good agreement with model predictions. In particular, we reveal partial mode correlations in the radiation of quasi-CW Raman fibre laser.

Abstract
For the first time we report the results of both numerical simulation and experimental observation of second-harmonic generation as an example of non-linear frequency conversion of pulses generated by passively mode-locked fiber master oscillator in different regimes including conventional (stable) and double-scale (partially coherent and noise-like) ones. We show that non-linear frequency conversion efficiency of double-scale pulses is slightly higher than that of conventional picosecond laser pulses with the same energy and duration despite strong phase fluctuations of double-scale pulses.

Abstract
We use numerical simulations to revisit the generation of fiber supercontinua pumped by partially coherent continuous-wave (CW) sources. Specifically, we show that intensity fluctuations characteristic of temporal partial coherence can be described as a stochastic train of high-order solitons, whose individual dynamics drive continuum formation. For sources with sufficiently low coherence, these solitons actually undergo fission rather than modulation instability, changing the nature of the CW supercontinuum evolution.

Abstract
A supercontinuum spanning over 700 nm with an average spectral power of 1.7 mW/nm and flatness of 6 dB was produced in a solid core, double zero dispersion wavelength photonic crystal fiber pumped with a high power, continuous-wave ytterbium fiber laser. The spectrum displays a strong feature centered around 1980 nm. Through numerical simulations we demonstrate that this feature is initially generated through the shedding of Cherenkov radiation by solitons at the second zero dispersion wavelength, and then extended by a four-wave mixing process between this generated dispersive component and other solitons forming the continuum.

Abstract
We show that the infrared edge of supercontinua generated in solid core photonic bandgap fibers is characterized by a very different temporal behavior than the one obtained in standard fibers. In particular, pulse-to-pulse spectral power fluctuations are significantly reduced near the bandgap edge, and the statistical distribution is quasi-gaussian. The spectral dynamics of this process and statistical properties are investigated experimentally and confirmed by numerical simulations. The reduction of power fluctuations originates from the cancellation of the soliton self-frequency shift near the bandgap edge.

Abstract
We perform a detailed quantitative numerical analysis of a partially coherent quasi-cw fiber laser on the example of a high-Q normal dispersion cavity Raman fiber laser. The key role of precise spectral performances of fiber Bragg gratings forming the laser cavity is clarified. It is shown that cross-phase modulation between the pump and Stokes waves does not affect the generation. Amplitudes of different longitudinal modes strongly fluctuate, obeying the Gaussian distribution. As the intensity statistics is noticeably nonexponential, longitudinal modes should be correlated.

Abstract
We investigate the intensity noise of a continuous-wave Raman fiber laser based on a novel technique where the noise is sampled with a low repetition rate signal in a low walk-off Raman amplifier configuration. With this method, we experimentally demonstrate that continuous-wave Raman fiber lasers exhibit high contrast intensity fluctuations on a timescale of several tens to hundreds of GHz. In fact, the power of the Raman laser fluctuates between nearly zero and a high multiple of the average power. Numerical simulations are used to study the role of pump depletion on the noise transfer process. Our study validates models of pumps used in some recent continuous wave supercontinuum generation simulations.

Abstract
We study experimentally and numerically the temporal features of supercontinuum generated with a continuous-wave ytterbium-doped fiber laser. We show that the temporal output of the supercontinuum is characterized by strong and brief power fluctuations, i.e. so-called optical rogue waves. We demonstrate numerically that these rare and strong events that appear and disappear from nowhere result from solitonic collisions.

Abstract
Supercontinuum generation using continuous-wave pumping is usually obtained by pumping a suitable fiber with a high-power fiber laser. Whereas many studies have concentrated in optimizing the dispersion characteristics of the nonlinear medium (the fiber) used to obtain the spectral broadening, very few have actually concentrated in optimizing the pump laser characteristics, and in particular, the dispersion in the cavity. In this paper we experimentally demonstrate that the fiber laser cavity dispersion has a strong influence in Raman fiber laser-pumped continuous-wave supercontinuum generation. We show that anomalous dispersion in the cavity favors spectral broadening over normal dispersion, since large, high-contrast intensity noise appears at the output of the laser. Additionally, we find that there is an optimum value of chromatic dispersion coefficient to obtain the most efficient broadening.

Abstract
Modulation instability of a continuous infrared wave leading to red-shifting solitons and blue-shifting dispersive waves and then subsequent soliton trapping is shown to enable the generation of blue solitary waves in optical fibers. The physical mechanism is described in the context of continuous wave supercontinuum generation leading to a spectrum which spans the visible and near infrared within practical experimental conditions.

Abstract
We demonstrate that rogue waves provide a powerful tool to actively control a nonlinear system with minimal effort. Specifically, optical rogue waves--rare, bright flashes of broadband light arising in subthreshold supercontinuum generation--are initiated by an exceedingly weak stimulus. Using this effect, we produce an optically switchable, ultrastable, and bright supercontinuum with greatly enhanced coherence.

Abstract
We report experimental observation and characterization of rogue wave-like extreme value statistics arising from pump-signal noise transfer in a fiber Raman amplifier. Specifically, by exploiting Raman amplification with an incoherent pump, the amplified signal is shown to develop a series of temporal intensity spikes whose peak power follows a power-law probability distribution. The results are interpreted using a numerical model of the Raman gain process using coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations, and the numerical model predicts results in good agreement with experiment.

Abstract
We demonstrate continuous wave supercontinuum generation extending to the visible spectral region by pumping photonic crystal fibers at 1.07 microm with a 400 W single mode, continuous wave, ytterbium fiber laser. The continuum spans over 1300 nm with average powers up to 50 W and spectral power densities over 50 mW/nm. Numerical modeling and understanding of the physical mechanisms has led us to identify the dominant contribution to the short wavelength extension to be trapping and scattering of dispersive waves by high energy solitons.

Abstract
For the first time the influence of noise amplification on decay of modulated continuous-wave pumping into a pulse series in an optical fiber is considered. Dependence of noise-to-signal ratio in pulse train at fibre exit on initial modulation depth obtained both analytically and by means of numerical simulations. The minimum modulation frequency is estimated which leads to a regular pulse train formation from CW pumping.

Abstract
We theoretically study broadband supercontinuum generation in photonic crystal fibers exhibiting two zero dispersion wavelengths and under continuous-wave pumping. We show that when the pump wavelength is located in between the zero-dispersion wavelengths, a wide and uniform spectral broadening is achieved through modulation instability, generation of both blue-shifted and red-shifted dispersive waves and subsequently through soliton self-frequency shift. This supercontinuum is therefore bounded by these two dispersive waves which allow the control of its bandwidth by a suitable tuning of the fiber dispersion. As a relevant example, we predict that broadband (1050-1600 nm) continuous-wave light can be generated in short lengths of microstructured fibers pumped by use of a 10-W Ytterbium fiber laser.

Abstract
The development of high-power cw fiber lasers has triggered a great interest in the phenomena of nonlinear pump spectral broadening and cw supercontinuum generation. These effects have very convenient applications in Raman amplification, optical fiber metrology, and fiber sensing. In particular, it was recently shown that pump incoherence has a strong impact in these processes. We study experimentally the effect of pump incoherence in nonlinear pump spectral broadening and cw supercontinuum generation in optical fibers. We show that under certain experimental conditions an optimum degree of pump incoherence yields the best performance in the broadening process. We qualitatively explain these results, and we point out that these results may have important implications in cw supercontinuum optimization.

Abstract
We numerically investigate supercontinuum generation using continuous-wave pumping. It is found that energy transfer during collision of solitons plays an important role. The relative influence of Raman gain on spectral broadening is shown to depend on the width of the calculation time window. Our results indicate that increasing the spectral linewidth of the pump can decrease the supercontinuum spectral width. Using a fiber with smaller dispersion at the pump wavelength reduces the required fiber length by decreasing the temporal width of the solitons formed from modulation instability. This also reduces the sensitivity to the pump spectral linewidth.

Abstract
We experimentally demonstrate that continuous-wave supercontinuum generation in optical fibers can be significantly enhanced by using both multiwavelength pumping and dispersion management. We show by detailed spectral analysis that continuum enhancement is achieved mainly through a combination of Raman-assisted modulation instabilities, soliton compression, and dispersive wave generation. With this technique, an 800 nm wide (from 1.2 to 2.0 microm) 2 W supercontinuum source is reported that uses a three-wavelength pump and a dispersion-tailored four-optical fibers arrangement.

Abstract
We investigate experimentally and theoretically the broadening of the optical spectrum of a multimode cw field propagating in the normal dispersion regime of a single-mode fiber. The width of the optical spectrum is not a monotonic function of propagation length. This behavior arising from the interplay between the Kerr effect and group-velocity dispersion contrasts with spectral broadening of mode-locked pulses.
