Spectroscopic properties of some derivatives of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons

Antiandrogenic and Estrogenic Activity Evaluation of Oxygenated and Nitrated Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons Using Chemically Activated Luciferase Expression Assays

To establish the risk of the endocrine disrupting activity of polycyclic aromatic compounds, especially oxygenated and nitrated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (oxy-PAHs and nitro-PAHs, respectively), antiandrogenic and estrogenic activities were determined using chemically activated luciferase expression (CALUX) assays with human osteoblast sarcoma cells. A total of 27 compounds including 9 oxy-PAHs (polycyclic aromatic ketones and quinones) and 8 nitro-PAHs was studied. The oxy-PAHs of 7H-benz[de]anthracen-7-one (BAO), 11H-benzo[a]fluoren-11-one (B[a]FO), 11H-benzo[b]fluoren-11-one (B[b]FO), and phenanthrenequinone (PhQ) exhibited significantly the potent inhibition of AR activation. All nitro-PAHs exhibited high antiandrogenic activities (especially high for 3-nitrofluoranthene (3-NFA) and 3-nitro-7H-benz[de]anthracen-7-one (3-NBAO)), and the AR inhibition was confirmed as noncompetitive for 3-NFA, 3-NBAO, and 1,3-dinitropyrene (1,3-DNPy). Antiandrogenic activity of 3-NFA demonstrated characteristically a U-shaped dose-response curve; however, the absence of fluorescence effect on the activity was confirmed. The prominent estrogenic activity dependent on dose-response curve was confirmed for 2 oxy-PAHs (i.e., B[a]FO and B[b]FO). Elucidating the role of AR and ER on the effects of polycyclic aromatic compounds (e.g., oxy- and nitro-PAHs) to endocrine dysfunctions in mammals and aquatic organisms remains a challenge.

Heteroatom Cycloaddition at the (BN)2 Bay Region of Dibenzoperylene

Cycloaddition-dehydration involving a BNBN-butadiene analogue at the bay region of a dibenzoperylene and a non-enolizable aldehyde provides a novel strategy for incorporation of the oxadiazadiborinane (B₂ N₂ CO) ring into the scaffold of a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon resulting in highly emissive compounds.

Preparation of Metal Oxides Containing ppm Levels of Pd as Catalysts for the Reduction of Nitroarene and Evaluation of Their Catalytic Activity by the Fluorescence-Based High-Throughput Screening Method

Herein, an easily accessible and efficient green method for the reduction of nitroarene compounds was developed using metal oxide catalysts. Heterogeneous metal oxides with or without Pd were prepared by a simple and scalable co-precipitation method and used for the reduction of nitroarenes. A fluorescence-based high-throughput screening (HTS) method was also developed for the rapid analysis of the reaction conditions. The catalytic activity of the metal oxides and reaction conditions were rapidly screened by the fluorescence-based HTS method, and Pd/CuO showed the highest catalytic activity under mild reaction conditions. After identifying the optimal reaction conditions, various nitroarenes were reduced to the corresponding aniline derivatives by Pd/CuO (0.005 mol% of Pd) under these conditions. Furthermore, the Pd/CuO catalyst was used for the one-pot Suzuki–Miyaura cross-coupling/reduction reaction. A gram-scale reaction (20 mmol) was successfully performed using the present method, and Pd/CuO showed high reusability without a loss of catalytic activity for five cycles.

Determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and their nitro-, amino-derivatives absorbed on particulate matter 2.5 by multiphoton ionization mass spectrometry using far-, deep-, and near-ultraviolet femtosecond lasers

Multiphoton ionization processes of parent-polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PPAHs), nitro-PAHs (NPAHs), and amino-PAHs (APAHs) were examined by gas chromatography combined with time-of-flight mass spectrometry using a femtosecond Ti:sapphire laser as the ionization source. The efficiency of multiphoton ionization was examined using lasers emitting in the far-ultraviolet (200 nm), deep-ultraviolet (267 nm), and near-ultraviolet (345 nm) regions. The largest signal intensities were obtained when the far-ultraviolet laser was employed. This favorable result can be attributed to the fact that these compounds have the largest molar absorptivities in the far-ultraviolet region. On the other hand, APAHs were ionized more efficiently than NPAHs in the near-ultraviolet region because of their low ionization energies. A sample extracted from a real particulate matter 2.5 (PM2.5) sample was measured, and numerous signal peaks arising from PAH and its analogs were observed at 200 nm. On the other hand, only a limited number of signed peaks were observed at 345 nm, some of which were signed to PPAHs, NPAHs, and APAHs. Thus, multiphoton ionization mass spectrometry has potential for the use in comprehensive analysis of toxic environmental pollutants.
