A fundamental understanding of the dependence of the laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) signal strength on the complex focusing dynamics of femtosecond laser pulses on either side of the focus

Near-Infrared Femtosecond Laser Ablation of Au-Coated Ni: Effect of Organic Fluids and Water on Crater Morphology, Ablation Efficiency and Hydrodynamic Properties of NiAu Nanoparticles

Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and profilometry of the crater morphology and ablation efficiency upon femtosecond laser ablation of Au-coated Ni targets in various fluids revealed a pronounced dependence on the ablation medium. For ethanol, a sufficient ablation efficiency was obtained, whereas for 2-butanol a higher efficiency indicated stronger laser-target interaction. Hierarchical features in the crater periphery pointed to asymmetrical energy deposition or a residual effect of the Coulomb-explosion-initiating ablation. Significant beam deviation in 2-butanol caused maximum multiple scattering at the crater bottom. The highest values of microstrain and increased grain size, obtained from Williamson-Hall plots, indicated the superposition of mechanical stress, defect formation and propagation of fatigue cracks in the crater circumference. For n-hexane, deposition of frozen droplets in the outer crater region suggested a femtosecond-laser-induced phase explosion. A maximum ablation depth occurred in water, likely due to its high cooling efficiency. Grazing incidence micro X-ray diffraction (GIXRD) of the used target showed residual carbon and partial surface oxidation. The produced nanoparticle colloids were examined by multiangle dynamic light scattering (DLS), employing larger scattering angles for higher sensitivity toward smaller nanoparticles. The smallest nanoparticles were obtained in 2-butanol and ethanol. In n-hexane, floating carbon flakes originated from femtosecond-laser-induced solvent decomposition.

Effects of Laser Beam Focusing Characteristics on Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectra

The impact of altering laser focusing conditions on laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy experiments is investigated under ambient Earth laboratory and simulated Martian atmospheres. Experiments were performed in which the focal spot size was varied on a sample by altering the lens to sample distance with respect to targets of interest. Samples investigated include aluminum, copper, and steel. Specific neutral and ionic transitions of each sample were monitored. Atomic and ionic emissions show different intensity peak distributions along the varying lens to sample distance. Ionic species have peak emissions when laser plasma is initiated with a focused spot within the sample in ambient Earth laboratory air, while atomic emissions have peak intensities several millimeters deeper into a sample. In simulated Martian atmospheres, atomic emissions are observed to peak when the laser is focused within the sample, while ionic emissions have peak intensities when the laser is focused near the surface of a sample.

Femtosecond laser induced breakdown spectroscopy based standoff detection of explosives and discrimination using principal component analysis

We report the standoff (up to ~2 m) and remote (~8.5 m) detection of novel high energy materials/explosive molecules (Nitroimidazoles and Nitropyrazoles) using the technique of femtosecond laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). We utilized two different collection systems (a) ME-OCT-0007 (commercially available) and (b) Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope for these experiments. In conjunction with LIBS data, principal component analysis was employed to discriminate/classify the explosives and the obtained results in both configurations are compared. Different aspects influencing the LIBS signal strength at far distances such as fluence at target, efficiency of collection system etc. are discussed.

Femtosecond Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy Studies of Nitropyrazoles: The Effect of Varying Nitro Groups

The technique of femtosecond laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (FLIBS) was employed to investigate seven explosive molecules of nitropyrazole in three different atmospheres: ambient air, nitrogen, and argon. The FLIBS data illustrated the presence of molecular emissions of cyanide (CN) violet bands, diatomic carbon (C2) Swan bands, and atomic emission lines of C, H, O, and N. To understand the plasma dynamics, the decay times of molecular and atomic emissions were determined from time-resolved spectral data obtained in three atmospheres: air, argon, and nitrogen. The CN decay time was observed to be longest in air, compared to nitrogen and argon atmospheres, for the molecules pyrazole (PY) and 4-nitropyrazole (4-NPY). In the case of C2 emission, the decay time was observed to be the longest in argon, compared to the air and nitrogen environments, for the molecules PY, 4-NPY, and 1-methyl-3,4,5-trinitropyrazole. The intensities of the CN, C2, C, H, O, and N emission lines and various molecular/atomic intensity ratios such as CN/C2, CN(sum)/C2(sum), CN/C, CN(sum)/C, C2/C, C2(sum)/C, (C2 + C) / CN, (C2(sum) + C)/CN(sum), O/H, O/N, and N/H were also deduced from the LIBS spectra obtained in argon atmosphere. A correlation between the observed decay times and molecular emission intensities with respect to the number of nitro groups, the atmospheric nitrogen content, and the oxygen balance of the molecules was investigated. The relationship among the LIBS signal intensity, the molecular/atomic intensity ratios, and the oxygen balance of these organic explosives was also explored.

Influence of laser-induced air breakdown on femtosecond laser ablation of aluminum

We investigated the influence of laser-induced air breakdown on the femtosecond laser ablation of aluminum target using time-resolved pump-probe shadowgraphic imaging method. The early-stage plasma expanding dynamics and subsequent expanding behaviors of shockwaves and material ejection plume were analyzed through shadowgraphs recorded at different time delays. The dominated mechanisms were clarified at different stages during femtosecond laser pulses ablating aluminum, which provide very valuable information for ultrashort laser ablation of metals.
