Attack resilience of the evolving scientific collaboration network

The shock, the coping, the resilience: smartphone application use reveals Covid-19 lockdown effects on human behaviors

Human mobility restriction policies have been widely used to contain the coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19). However, a critical question is how these policies affect individuals' behavioral and psychological well-being during and after confinement periods. Here, we analyze China's five most stringent city-level lockdowns in 2021, treating them as natural experiments that allow for examining behavioral changes in millions of people through smartphone application use. We made three fundamental observations. First, the use of physical and economic activity-related apps experienced a steep decline, yet apps that provide daily necessities maintained normal usage. Second, apps that fulfilled lower-level human needs, such as working, socializing, information seeking, and entertainment, saw an immediate and substantial increase in screen time. Those that satisfied higher-level needs, such as education, only attracted delayed attention. Third, human behaviors demonstrated resilience as most routines resumed after the lockdowns were lifted. Nonetheless, long-term lifestyle changes were observed, as significant numbers of people chose to continue working and learning online, becoming "digital residents." This study also demonstrates the capability of smartphone screen time analytics in the study of human behaviors.

Impact of Sudden Global Events on Cross-Field Research Cooperation

Since the outbreak of COVID-19, in addition to the continuous increment in the number of infected patients, the number of COVID-19-related papers has also increased significantly. According to the statistics, its number even exceeds the research of some research fields over many years. Similar to COVID-19, the related research on COVID-19 also seems highly infectious. What causes this situation? By crawling the data of COVID-19-related papers from web of Sciences this year, we found that there are three mechanisms to promote the rapid growth of the number of COVID-19 papers: incentive mechanism, cross-field collaboration mechanism, and potential impact mechanism of writing papers. To understand the impact of COVID-19 on cross-domain paper network further, we proposed a new construction method of multi-field paper association structure network based on COVID-19. The paper association mechanism and the wall breaking principle between multiple research fields were found through the experiments. Then, combined with the constructed network, we gave the knowledge dissemination model of the new discoveries in multiple fields and obtained some relevant new findings.

Robustness on interdependent networks with a multiple-to-multiple dependent relationship

Interdependent networks as an important structure of the real system not only include one-to-one dependency relationship but also include more realistic undirected multiple interdependent relationship. The study on interdependent networks plays an important role in designing more resilient real systems. Here, we mainly focus on the case of interdependent networks with a multiple-to-multiple correspondence of interdependent nodes by generalizing feedback and nonfeedback conditions. We develop a new mathematical framework and study numerically and analytically the percolation of interdependent networks with partial multiple-to-multiple dependency links by using percolation theory. By analyzing the process of cascading failure, the size of the giant component and the critical threshold are analytically obtained and testified by simulation results for couple Erdös-Re˙nyi and scale-free networks. The results imply that the system shows a discontinuous phase transition for different coupling strengths. We find that the system becomes more resilient and easy to defend by increasing the coupling strength and the connectivity density. Our model has the potential to shed light on designing more resilient real-world dependent systems.

Tie strength distribution in scientific collaboration networks

Science is increasingly dominated by teams. Understanding patterns of scientific collaboration and their impacts on the productivity and evolution of disciplines is crucial to understand scientific processes. Electronic bibliography offers a unique opportunity to map and investigate the nature of scientific collaboration. Recent studies have demonstrated a counterintuitive organizational pattern of scientific collaboration networks: densely interconnected local clusters consist of weak ties, whereas strong ties play the role of connecting different clusters. This pattern contrasts itself from many other types of networks where strong ties form communities while weak ties connect different communities. Although there are many models for collaboration networks, no model reproduces this pattern. In this paper, we present an evolution model of collaboration networks, which reproduces many properties of real-world collaboration networks, including the organization of tie strengths, skewed degree and weight distribution, high clustering, and assortative mixing.
