The heritability of mating behaviour in a fly and its plasticity in response to the threat of sperm competition

Genotype-by-environment interactions for precopulatory mate guarding in a lek-mating insect

In sexually reproducing species, males often experience strong pre- and postcopulatory sexual selection leading to a wide variety of male adaptations. One example is mate guarding, where males prevent females from mating with other males either before or after they (will) have mated themselves. In case social conditions vary short term and in an unpredictable manner and if there is genetic variation in plasticity of mate guarding (i.e., genotype-by-environment interaction, G × E), adaptive behavioral plasticity in mate guarding may evolve. Here, we test for genetic variation in the plasticity of precopulatory mate-guarding behavior in the lek-mating lesser wax moth Achroia grisella. When offered two females in rapid succession, virgin males of this species usually copulate around 10-20 min with the first female. With the second female, however, they engage in copulation posture for many hours until they have produced another spermatophore, an unusual behavior among insects possibly functioning as precopulatory mate guarding. Previous studies showed the mating latency with the second female to be shorter under higher perceived sperm competition risk. We accordingly measured the mate-guarding behavior of males from six inbred lines under either elevated perceived male-male competition risk or under control conditions allowing us to test for G × E interactions. We found significant inbred line-by-competitor treatment interactions on mating latency and copulation duration with the second female suggesting genetic variation in the degree of behavioral plasticity. However, we found no significant G × E interaction on the sum of mating latency and copulation duration. Our results suggest a potential for adaptive evolution of mate-guarding plasticity in natural populations of lek-mating species. Future studies using selection experiments and experimental evolution approaches in laboratory populations, or comparisons of multiple natural populations will be helpful to study under which conditions plasticity in male mate-guarding behavior evolves.

Sperm allocation strategies in a sperm heteromorphic insect

Theories predict that in polyandrous species, the focal male should increase sperm allocation per mate in the presence of rivals to gain greater share of paternity, but in the presence of additional mates, he should reduce sperm allocation per mate to save sperm for insemination of more mates. However, empirical findings are often inconsistent and reasons behind are unclear. Furthermore, many studies use copulation duration as an estimate of the number of sperm transferred. Yet, empirical evidence for such assumption is largely lacking. Here, we used a sperm heteromorphic insect Ephestia kuehniella whose males produce two types of sperm, eupyrenes (fertile) and apyrenes (nonfertile), to test these postulations. We allowed focal males to detect chemical and acoustic but no tactile cues from rivals or additional mates both before and during mating and measured copulation duration and sperm allocation in successive copulations. We demonstrate that males transfer significantly more eupyrenes per mate in the presence of rivals and that the sperm allocation pattern persists in successive copulations under this condition. However, males do not adjust apyrene allocation in response to rivals probably because apyrenes play a relatively minor role in male reproductive success. Contrary to a previous study, focal males do not respond to additional mates most likely due to the lack of tactile cues in the present study. We reveal that sperm allocation is not a function of copulation duration in this insect for spermatophore formation and delivery occupy most of copulation duration and sperm transfer is complete near the end of copulation.

The repeatability of mating failure in a polyandrous bug

Mating failure, characterized by the lack of production of offspring following copulation, is relatively common across taxa yet is little understood. It is unclear whether mating failures are stochastic occurrences between incompatible mating partners or represent a persistent, meaningful phenotype on the part of one or other sex. Here we test this in the seed bug Lygaeus simulans, by sequentially mating families of males with randomly allocated unrelated females and calculating the repeatability of mating outcome for each individual male and family. Mating outcome is significantly repeatable within individual males but not across full‐sib brothers. We conclude that mating failure represents a consistent male‐associated phenotype with low heritability in this species, affected by as yet undetermined environmental influences on males.

Behavioral plasticity and G × E of reproductive tactics in Nicrophorus vespilloides burying beetles

Phenotypic plasticity is important in the evolution of traits and facilitates adaptation to rapid environmental changes. However, variation in plasticity at the individual level, and the heritable basis underlying this plasticity is rarely quantified for behavioral traits. Alternative behavioral reproductive tactics are key components of mating systems but are not often considered within a phenotypic plasticity framework (i.e., as reaction norms). Here, using lines artificially selected for repeated mating rate, we test for genetic (G × E) sources of variation in reproductive behavior of male Nicrophorus vespilloides burying beetles (including signaling behavior), as well as the role of individual body size, in responsiveness to changes in social environment. The results show that body size influences the response of individuals' signaling behavior to changes in the social environment. Moreover, there was G × E underlying the responses of males to variation in the quality of social environment experienced (relative size of focal male compared to his rival). This shows that individual variation in plasticity and social sensitivity of signaling behavior can evolve in response to selection on investment in mating behavior, with males selected for high mating investment having greater social sensitivity.
