Abstract
INTRODUCTION Postpartum mood disorders are heterogenous disorders and comprise postpartum psychosis and postpartum depression. Evidence is accumulating that systemic monocyte/macrophage activation, low-grade inflammation and (premature senescence related) T cell defects increase the risk for mood disorders outside pregnancy by affecting the function of microglia and T cells in the emotional brain (the cortico-limbic system) leading to inadequate mood regulation upon stress. AREAS COVERED The evidence in the literature that similar immune dysregulations are present in postpartum mood disorders. RESULTS The physiological postpartum period is characterized by a rapid T cell surge and a mild activation of the monocyte/macrophage system. Postpartum mood disorder patients show a diminished T cell surge (including that of T regulatory cells) and an increase in low grade inflammation, that is, an increased inflammatory state of monocytes/macrophages and higher levels of serum pro-inflammatory cytokines. EXPERT OPINION Anti-inflammatory agents (e.g. COX-2 inhibitors) and T cell boosting agents (e.g. low-dose IL-2 therapy) should be further investigated as treatment. The hypothesis should be investigated that postpartum mood disorders are active episodes (triggered by changes in the postpartum immuno-endocrine milieu) in ongoing, dynamically fluctuating aberrant neuro-immune-endocrine trajectories leading to mood disorders in women (inheritably) vulnerable to these disorders.

Abstract
Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) is an autoimmune disorder characterized by the destruction of thyroid follicular cells by thyroid peroxidase antibodies (TPOAb) and thyroglobulin antibodies (TgAb), leading to hypothyroidism. Hashimoto's encephalopathy (HE) is associated with elevated levels of antithyroid antibodies. An important question is whether brain alterations precede the development of HE and are present in euthyroid patients with HT, and what pathomechanisms could be responsible for these changes. A PubMed search was conducted to identify studies addressing this issue. Numerous questionnaire studies confirmed impairments in cognitive functioning, mental and physical health, and overall well-being in euthyroid HT patients. Additionally, some imaging and mouse model studies indicate that euthyroid patients with HT likely have central nervous system alterations. Antibodies may be involved in the development of these changes. Some research suggests the role of TPOAb and TgAb, while other studies highlight the involvement of coexisting antibodies. Determining whether antibodies are assessed in serum or cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is crucial. Antibody-specific indices (ASIs) can differentiate between antibodies passively diffusing from the serum and brain-derived antibodies, and could serve as biomarkers for brain alterations in HT patients. Much more research is needed to identify reliable biomarkers and treatments that could improve the quality of life for these patients.

Abstract
Background Inflammatory cytokines have long been considered closely related to the development of oral lichen planus (OLP), and we further explored the causal relationship between the two by Mendelian randomization (MR) method. Methods We performed bidirectional MR analyses by large genome-wide association studies (GWAS). The data included a large-scale OLP dataset, as well as datasets of 41 inflammatory cytokines. All data were obtained from the University of Bristol database, which includes 41 inflammatory cytokines, and the GWAS Catalog database, which includes 91 inflammatory cytokines. OLP data were obtained from the Finngen database, which includes 6411 cases and 405770 healthy controls. We used the inverse variance weighted (IVW) method, MR-Egger method, weighted median method, simple mode method and weighted mode method to analyze the causal relationship between inflammatory cytokines and OLP, and we also combined with sensitivity analysis to further verify the robustness of the results. We performed a meta-analysis of positive or potentially positive results for the same genes to confirm the reliability of the final results. Results We primarily used the IVW analysis method, corrected using the Benjamin Hochberg (BH) method. When p<0.00038 (0.05/132), the results are significantly causal; when 0.00038 Conclusion There is a causal association between OLP and some inflammatory cytokines, which may play an important role in the pathogenesis of OLP and require further attention.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) is a prevalent autoimmune disease of thyroid gland with a shared immunological mechanism with mood disorders. Affective temperament (AT) is a biologically determined personality trait that has been linked to mood disorders. The aim of this study was to examine the association between dominant AT and levels of psychosomatic symptoms in women newly diagnosed with HT in comparison to clinically healthy subjects. METHODS The observational cross-sectional study with nested case control study was involving 146 consecutive participants, who were divided into three groups. The two study groups consisted of women with HT (73), including 49 with hypothyroid HT and 24 with euthyroid HT, and the third group was a control group of healthy participants (73). The Serbian version of the TEMPS-A was utilized to assess AT, while the 4DSQ was used to measure psychosomatic symptoms. RESULTS The results showed that hyperthymic AT was dominant in all examined groups. The groups with HT differed from the control group in terms of depressive and cyclothymic AT. Furthermore, the study found higher levels of psychosomatic symptoms in the group with HT compared to the control group, with significant differences in distress (p = 0.005) and somatization (p = 0.023) levels. All AT was associated with levels of psychosomatic symptoms in subjects with hypothyroid HT. In contrast, in subjects with euthyroid HT, the association was only found between depressive and cyclothymic AT with distress and depression levels, as well as between somatization and cyclothymic AT. No association was found between AT and anxiety levels in subjects with euthyroid HT. CONCLUSION The research found differences between study groups in the association between AT and levels of psychosomatic symptoms. Further research with a larger sample size is necessary to more clearly define the associations between affective temperaments and psychosomatic symptoms in women with euthyroid and hypothyroid HT.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Thyroid autoimmunity is a potentially critical factor that is often neglected in the association between subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH) and depressive disorders. This study aimed to investigate the clinical correlates of autoimmune thyroiditis (AIT) and non-autoimmune hypothyroidism (NAIH) in treatment-naïve patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). METHOD Using a cross-sectional design, we recruited a total of 1718 outpatients with treatment-naïve MDD. Demographic and relevant clinical information including duration of MDD, severity of depression and anxiety, psychotic symptoms, suicide attempts, thyroid function parameters, etc. were collected. According to thyroid function parameters, patients were classified as AIT, NAIH, latent Hashimoto's thyroiditis (LH) and euthyroidism (ET). RESULTS Patients with SCH (including AIT and NAIH) had older age at onset, and were more likely to have psychotic symptoms compared to those with ET. Multiple linear regression analysis showed that SCH was associated with duration of MDD and HAMD scores. Logistic regression analysis showed that the odds of having more severe anxiety and metabolic syndrome were greater among patients with SCH compared to those with ET. The odds of having suicide attempts were greater among patients with AIT than among those with ET. LIMITATION Because of the cross-sectional design of this study, we were unable to sort out causality between MDD and SCH. CONCLUSION Our findings suggested that AIT and NAIH were associated with duration of MDD, HAMD scores, severity of anxiety, and metabolic syndrome. However, only AIT in SCH was associated with suicide attempts.

Abstract
Excess iodine can cause autoimmune thyroiditis (AIT) in women, but it is unclear whether this has any implications for neurodevelopmental mechanisms in offspring. We studied the effects of experimental autoimmune thyroiditis (EAT) rats with different amounts of iodine intake on offspring brain development via the brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF)-tropomycin receptor kinase B (TrkB) signaling pathway, because BDNF plays an important role in neurodevelopment. Rats in three thyroglobulin (Tg) immunized groups with varying iodine intakes (Tg (100 µg/L iodine), Tg + High-iodine I group (Tg + HI, 20 mg/L iodine), and Tg + High-iodine II group (Tg + HII, 200 mg/L iodine)) were injected with 800 µg Tg once every 2 weeks for 3 times. Rats in the control group (NI, 100 µg/L iodine) were immunized with saline. Arsenic-cerium catalytic spectrophotometry was used to measure urine iodine levels. The lymphocytic infiltration in the thyroids was observed by histopathological studies. Thyroid autoantibodies levels were measured using radioimmunoassay. The norepinephrine (NE) contents were measured by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The levels of the BDNF-TrkB signaling pathway and related genes were measured by quantitative real-time PCR and Western blot. Urinary iodine levels increased as iodine intake increased. Lymphocytes were significantly aggravated in Tg-immunized rats. Serum thyroglobulin antibody (TgAb) and thyroid peroxidase antibody (TPOAb) levels were clearly elevated in Tg-immunized rats. Tg-immune groups had significantly lower NE levels. The BDNF-TrkB signaling pathway and related gene mRNA and protein levels were found to be significantly lower in Tg-immune groups with higher iodine levels. Maternal AIT may reduce the levels of certain neurodevelopmental mechanisms in the offspring, such as the BDNF-TrkB signaling pathway and related factors, while excessive iodine consumption by the mother may exacerbate this effect.

Abstract
Various autoimmune diseases, including autoimmune hypothyroidism (AHT), are associated with a higher risk of developing mood disorders throughout life. Depression is accompanied by the changes in the levels of inflammatory and trophic factors, including interleukins (IL-1beta, IL-2, IL-6), interferon alpha (IFN-alpha), tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha), C-reactive protein (CRP), and brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). Disclosure of the relationship between the coexistence of depression and AHT indicates that the pathomechanism of depression may be related to the changes in the immune system, it is also possible that both conditions may be caused by the same immune processes. The above hypothesis is indirectly supported by the observations that the treatment with both antidepressants and levothyroxine leads to a decrease in the levels of proinflammatory cytokines with an increase in BDNF concentrations, simultaneously correlating with an improvement in the clinical parameters. However, so far there are no long-term studies determining the causal relationship between depression, thyroid autoantibodies, and cytokine profile, which could bring us closer to understanding the interrelationships between them and facilitate the use of an adequate pharmacotherapy, not necessarily psychiatric. We consider the above issues to be insufficiently investigated but of great importance. This article is an overview of the available literature as well as an introduction to our research project.

Abstract
Thyroid hormone is an important regulator of early brain development, particularly during early stages of gestation during which foetal thyroid hormone availability depends on the maternal transfer of thyroid hormones. There is a wide range of experimental studies showing that low maternal thyroid hormone availability is associated with suboptimal brain development parameters. While few clinical studies have shown that overt maternal hypothyroidism is associated with lower child IQ, the question whether more subclinical changes in maternal thyroid function could also lead to suboptimal foetal brain development. In this review, we put the latter studies in perspective and discuss their interpretation from an epidemiological and clinical perspective. Furthermore, we extend this discussion to also include future perspective and identify important knowledge gaps in the field.

Abstract
Immune dysregulation plays a role in the vulnerability for mood disorders. Immune growth factors, such as Stem Cell Factor (SCF), Insulin-like Growth Factor-Binding Protein-2 (IGF-BP2), Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF), IL-7 and sCD25 have repeatedly been reported altered in patients with mood disorders. The aim of this study was to investigate levels of these factors in serum of adolescent bipolar offspring, who have a heightened risk for mood disorder development and to also analyze the data combined with previously published data. Growth factors were assessed by CBA/ELISA in adolescent bipolar offspring (n=96, mean age=16years) and in age- and gender-matched healthy controls (n=50). EGF belonged to a mutually correlating cluster of mainly neurotrophic compounds including S100B and BDNF, which were in general decreased in serum. IL-7, SCF, IGF-BP2 and sCD25, belonged to a different mutually correlating cluster of immune growth factors, which were in general increased: IGF-BP2 significantly in serum of offspring without a mood disorder, IL-7 and SCF in serum of offspring who had experienced a mood episode. This pattern of de- and increases was not different between bipolar offspring that developed or did not develop a mood disorder over time, apart from the IGF-BP2 level, which was near significantly higher in offspring later developing a mood disorder. Correlations with the previously published immune-cellular abnormalities were not found. In conclusion non-affected adolescents at familial mood disorder development risk were characterized by a distinct pattern of a series of compounds operating in a network of hematopoiesis, neurogenesis and inflammation.
