Time multiscale regularization for nonlinear image registration

Regularization-based methods are commonly used for image registration. However, fixed regularizers have limitations in capturing details and describing the dynamic registration process. To address this issue, we propose a time multiscale registration framework for nonlinear image registration in this paper. Our approach replaces the fixed regularizer with a monotone decreasing sequence, and iteratively uses the residual of the previous step as the input for registration. Particularly, first, we introduce a dynamically varying regularization strategy that updates regularizers at each iteration and incorporates them with a multiscale framework. This approach guarantees an overall smooth deformation field in the initial stage of registration and fine-tunes local details as the images become more similar. We then deduce convergence analysis under certain conditions on the regularizers and parameters. Further, we introduce a TV-like regularizer to demonstrate the efficiency of our method. Finally, we compare our proposed multiscale algorithm with some existing methods on both synthetic images and pulmonary computed tomography (CT) images. The experimental results validate that our proposed algorithm outperforms the compared methods, especially in preserving details during image registration with sharp structures.

Symmetric Diffeomorphic Image Registration with Multi-Label Segmentation Masks

Image registration aims to align two images through a spatial transformation. It plays a significant role in brain imaging analysis. In this research, we propose a symmetric diffeomorphic image registration model based on multi-label segmentation masks to solve the problems in brain MRI registration. We first introduce the similarity metric of the multi-label masks to the energy function, which improves the alignment of the brain region boundaries and the robustness to the noise. Next, we establish the model on the diffeomorphism group through the relaxation method and the inverse consistent constraint. The algorithm is designed through the local linearization and least-squares method. We then give spatially adaptive parameters to coordinate the descent of the energy function in different regions. The results show that our approach, compared with the mainstream methods, has better accuracy and noise resistance, and the transformations are more smooth and more reasonable.

Longitudinal manganese-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging of neural projections and activity

Manganese-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MEMRI) holds exceptional promise for preclinical studies of brain-wide physiology in awake-behaving animals. The objectives of this review are to update the current information regarding MEMRI and to inform new investigators as to its potential. Mn(II) is a powerful contrast agent for two main reasons: (1) high signal intensity at low doses; and (2) biological interactions, such as projection tracing and neural activity mapping via entry into electrically active neurons in the living brain. High-spin Mn(II) reduces the relaxation time of water protons: at Mn(II) concentrations typically encountered in MEMRI, robust hyperintensity is obtained without adverse effects. By selectively entering neurons through voltage-gated calcium channels, Mn(II) highlights active neurons. Safe doses may be repeated over weeks to allow for longitudinal imaging of brain-wide dynamics in the same individual across time. When delivered by stereotactic intracerebral injection, Mn(II) enters active neurons at the injection site and then travels inside axons for long distances, tracing neuronal projection anatomy. Rates of axonal transport within the brain were measured for the first time in "time-lapse" MEMRI. When delivered systemically, Mn(II) enters active neurons throughout the brain via voltage-sensitive calcium channels and clears slowly. Thus behavior can be monitored during Mn(II) uptake and hyperintense signals due to Mn(II) uptake captured retrospectively, allowing pairing of behavior with neural activity maps for the first time. Here we review critical information gained from MEMRI projection mapping about human neuropsychological disorders. We then discuss results from neural activity mapping from systemic Mn(II) imaged longitudinally that have illuminated development of the tonotopic map in the inferior colliculus as well as brain-wide responses to acute threat and how it evolves over time. MEMRI posed specific challenges for image data analysis that have recently been transcended. We predict a bright future for longitudinal MEMRI in pursuit of solutions to the brain-behavior mystery.

Thalamic Nuclei and Thalamocortical Pathways After Left Hemispheric Stroke and Their Association with Picture Naming

Background: Previous studies utilized lesion-centric approaches to study the role of the thalamus in language. In this study, we tested the hypotheses that non-lesioned dorsomedial and ventral anterior nuclei (DMVAC) and pulvinar lateral posterior nuclei complexes (PLC) of the thalamus and their projections to the left hemisphere show secondary effects of the strokes, and that their microstructural integrity is closely related to language-related functions. Methods: Subjects with language impairments after a left-hemispheric cortical and/or subcortical, early stroke (n = 31, ≤6 months) or late stroke (n = 30, ≥12 months) sparing thalamus underwent the Boston Naming Test (BNT) and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). The tissue integrity of DMVAC, PLC, and their cortical projections was quantified with DTI. The right-left asymmetry profiles of these structures were evaluated in relation to the time since stroke. The association between microstructural integrity and BNT score was investigated in relation to stroke chronicity with partial correlation analyses adjusted for confounds. Results: In both early stroke and late stroke groups, left-sided tracts showed significantly higher mean diffusivities (MDs), which were likely due to Wallerian degeneration. Higher MD values of the cortical projections from the left PLC (r = -0.5, p = 0.005) and DMVAC (r = -0.53, p = 0.002) were correlated with lower BNT score in the late stroke but not early stroke group. Conclusion: Nonlesioned thalamic nuclei and thalamocortical pathways show rightward lateralization of the microstructural integrity after a left hemispheric stroke, and this pattern is associated with poorer naming.

Point Set Registration With Similarity and Affine Transformations Based on Bidirectional KMPE Loss

Robust point set registration is a challenging problem, especially in the cases of noise, outliers, and partial overlapping. Previous methods generally formulate their objective functions based on the mean-square error (MSE) loss and, hence, are only able to register point sets under predefined constraints (e.g., with Gaussian noise). This article proposes a novel objective function based on a bidirectional kernel mean p -power error (KMPE) loss, to jointly deal with the above nonideal situations. KMPE is a nonsecond-order similarity measure in kernel space and shows a strong robustness against various noise and outliers. Moreover, a bidirectional measure is applied to judge the registration, which can avoid the ill-posed problem when a lot of points converges to the same point. In particular, we develop two effective optimization methods to deal with the point set registrations with the similarity and the affine transformations, respectively. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of our methods.

Gabor Feature Based LogDemons with Inertial Constraint for Nonrigid Image Registration

Nonrigid image registration plays an important role in the field of computer vision and medical application. The methods based on Demons algorithm for image registration usually use intensity difference as similarity criteria. However, intensity based methods can not preserve image texture details well and are limited by local minima. In order to solve these problems, we propose a Gabor feature based LogDemons registration method in this paper, called GFDemons. We extract Gabor features of the registered images to construct feature similarity metric since Gabor filters are suitable to extract image texture information. Furthermore, because of the weak gradients in some image regions, the update fields are too small to transform the moving image to the fixed image correctly. In order to compensate this deficiency, we propose an inertial constraint strategy based on GFDemons, named IGFDemons, using the previous update fields to provide guided information for the current update field. The inertial constraint strategy can further improve the performance of the proposed method in terms of accuracy and convergence. We conduct experiments on three different types of images and the results demonstrate that the proposed methods achieve better performance than some popular methods.
