Abstract
BACKGROUND Orthodontically induced root resorption (OIRR) is a common side effect of orthodontic treatment. This study compares the degree of OIRR between root-filled teeth (RFT) and vital pulp teeth (VPT), and analyzes relevant study variables. METHODS We conducted a retrospective study on 69 patients who had undergone orthodontic treatment. Using Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT), we measured changes of root length before and after treatment through a unique method involving three-dimensional (3D) image registration and superimposition. Factors related to the OIRR such as gender, type of treatment, tooth type, age, duration of treatment and distance of root movement were considered. RESULTS The sample included 55 females and 14 males aged 27.19 ± 6.08 years. On the basis that there was no significant difference in the root movement distance between RFT and VPT, RFT showed significantly less OIRR than VPT (P < 0.05). Gender did not significantly impact on OIRR for either RFT or VPT group (P > 0.05). In women specifically, RFT displayed less resorption than VPT (P < 0.05). For treatment type, extraction cases demonstrated a lower degree of OIRR in RFT than VPT (P < 0.05), and notable greater OIRR in with-extraction group compared to no-extractions group was found in RFT (P < 0.05), but not in VPT (P > 0.05). Tooth type did not yield significant differences in OIRR overall; however, upper teeth and premolars experienced lower resorption in RFT than in VPT (P < 0.05). Cases treated with fixed appliance had higher OIRR in both RFT and VPT than those with clear aligners (P < 0.05). Age did not correlate significantly with OIRR for either group (P > 0.05). And duration of treatment positively correlated with OIRR for both types (RFT: r = 0.5506, P < 0.0001; VPT: r = 0.4371, P = 0.0002), so did root movement distance (RFT: r = 0.2955, P = 0.0140; VPT: r = 0.2790, P = 0.0206). CONCLUSIONS RFT exhibit significantly less OIRR than VPT after orthodontic treatment. Treatment type, appliance type, duration of treatment and root movement distance are significant factors influencing OIRR. Personalized orthodontic treatment plans and vigilant monitoring are crucial to mitigate OIRR risks.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This investigation compared the extent of external apical root resorption (EARR) in root-filled teeth (RFT) and their contralateral vital pulp teeth (VPT) counterparts during orthodontic treatment (OT) with clear aligner (CA) treatment or fixed appliance (FA) treatment. METHODS Sixty-six patients with similar baseline American Board of Orthodontics (ABO) discrepancy index scores were divided into two groups: 37 patients (21 females, 16 males; mean age 17.45 ± 2.67 years) in the FA group, and 29 patients (18 females, 11 males; mean age 18.33 ± 1.96 years) in the CA group. Digital panoramic radiographs captured pre- and post-OT were used to measure tooth lengths and root surface measurements in mandibular molars. EARR in both RFT and contralateral VPT was evaluated pre- and post-OT. Statistical analysis employed paired t-tests, independent t-tests, and analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) (p < .05). RESULTS All teeth exhibited varying degrees of EARR following OT. FA treatment resulted in significantly longer treatment duration (p < .05) and greater EARR compared to CA treatment (p < .05). Moreover, statistically significant differences in EARR were observed within both groups between RFT and VPT (p < .05). CONCLUSIONS Comparison of pre- and post-OT radiographs revealed different degrees of EARR in all teeth. CA treatment resulted in less frequent and less severe EARR compared to FA treatment. RFT demonstrated greater resistance to EARR than VPT in both treatment groups.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The purpose of this systematic review was to research the difference between root-filled teeth (RFT) and vital pulp teeth (VPT) in orthodontically induced external apical root resorption (EARR) and to offer suggestions for clinicians on therapeutic sequence and timing when considering combined treatment of endodontic and orthodontic. MATERIALS AND METHODS An electronic search of published studies was conducted before November 2022 in PubMed, Web of Science and other databases. Eligibility criteria were based on the Population, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome, and Study design (PICOS) framework. RevMan 5.3 software was used for statistical analysis. Single-factor meta-regression analysis was used to explore the sources of literature heterogeneity, and a random effects model was used for analysis. RESULTS This meta-analysis comprised 8 studies with 10 sets of data. As there was significant heterogeneity among the studies, we employed a random effects model. The funnel plot of the random effects model exhibited a symmetrical distribution, indicating no publication bias among the included studies. The EARR rate of RFT was significantly lower than that of VPT. CONCLUSIONS In the context of concurrent endodontic and orthodontic treatment, priority should be given to endodontic therapy, as it serves as the foundation for subsequent orthodontic procedures. The optimal timing for orthodontic tooth movement post-root canal therapy is contingent upon factors such as the extent of periapical lesion resolution and the degree of dental trauma sustained. A comprehensive clinical assessment is essential in guiding the selection of the most suitable approach for achieving optimal treatment outcomes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To explore the efficacy of glucosamine sulfate (GS) combined with loxoprofen sodium (LS) in rats with knee osteoarthritis (KOA) and its effect on chondrocytes. METHODS We randomly assigned 40 SPF SD rats to normal group (NG), control group (CG), treatment group (TG), and model group (MG). CG and TG were processed with continuous irrigation of LS and GS. NG and MG were given normal saline. We collected 3 mL of venous blood from the rat's lower limb for the detection of serum IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, and TNF-α by ELISA. Four weeks after irrigation, 5 rats in each group were randomly selected for anesthesia. The water content was detected, and the chondrocytes were collected. MTT assay was used to detect apoptosis, and Western blot (WB) to measure concentrations of Bax, Bcl-2, Caspase3, Caspase9, TLR4, and NF-kB. RESULTS The levels of IL-1 β, IL-6, IL-8, and TNF-α decreased in CG and TG, but increased in MG (P<0.05). After treatment, the expression of inflammatory factors was highest in MG (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS GS combined with LS showed good efficacy in rats with knee osteoarthritis, which may be achieved by inhibiting the expression of inflammatory factors and knee chondrocyte apoptosis via the TLR4-NF-kB pathway.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Considering the increasing prevalence of alcohol use and the growing number of orthodontic patients, some orthodontic patients might engage in binge drinking during treatment. Nevertheless, little is known about the effect of alcohol use on orthodontic treatment. METHODS Male Wistar rats were divided into ethanol and control groups (n = 32). The rats received a single daily intraperitoneal injection of 20% (vol/vol) ethanol/saline solution at a dose of 3 g/kg of ethanol or saline for three consecutive days, and no injection was given during the remaining four days each week. All rats received orthodontic appliances to draw the maxillary first molar mesially. The rats were sacrificed at days 14 and 28, respectively. The amount of tooth movement was measured. Root resorption area was evaluated by scanning electron microscope. Hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining and tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) staining were conducted. Immunohistochemistry staining was performed to evaluate the expressions of nuclear factor kappa B ligand (RANKL), osteoprotegerin (OPG), and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS). RESULTS There were no significant differences in tooth movement and root resorption between ethanol and control groups. The number of TRAP-positive cells was significantly higher in the ethanol group. The expression of RANKL was statistically increased in the ethanol group. In contrast, the expression of OPG was remarkably decreased in rats injected with ethanol. Moreover, the iNOS level was significantly up-regulated in the ethanol group. CONCLUSION The tooth movement and root resorption in rats were not affected by binge alcohol exposure.

Abstract
Objective This study investigated the inhibitory effect of baicalin on orthodontically
induced inflammatory root resorption in rats. Methods Forty-five male Wistar rats were randomly divided into three groups of 15
rats each. Fifty grams of force was used to establish an orthodontic tooth
movement model. Baicalin (40 mg/kg) was locally injected into rats in the
baicalin group at 3-day intervals; concurrently, normal saline was injected
into rats in the negative control group. On the 21st day after orthodontic
treatment, the tooth movement distance and root resorption area ratio were
measured. Histomorphology changes were observed by hematoxylin and eosin
staining and immunohistochemistry. Results There was no significant difference in tooth movement distance between
groups. The root resorption area ratio was significantly lower in the
baicalin group than in the negative control group. Runx-2 expression was
significantly higher in the baicalin group than in the negative control
group, while tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α expression was significantly
lower in the baicalin group than in the negative control group. Conclusions Baicalin inhibits orthodontically induced inflammatory root resorption by
enhancing the expression of Runx-2 and reducing the expression of TNF-α, but
does not affect tooth movement distance.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Baicalin mediates bone metabolism and has shown protective activity against periodontal tissue damage in a rat model of periodontitis. Therefore, we hypothesized that baicalin may inhibit the root resorption that occurs during orthodontic tooth movement and examined its effect on the histological changes in periodontal tissue that occur during tooth movement. METHODS First molars of rats were subjected to traction using excessive orthodontic force to produce a root resorption model. Rats in the baicalin group received baicalin for 3 weeks during tooth movement, and the amount of first molar movement on day 21 after the initiation of traction was measured by three-dimensional micro-computed tomography analysis. After tooth movement, tissue samples from the mesial and tension sides were collected, and successive horizontal sections were prepared and examined using hematoxylin-eosin and tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) staining and immunohistochemical staining for the receptor activator of NF-kB ligand (RANKL) and osteoprotegerin (OPG). The severity of root resorption was also determined by histological analysis. RESULTS There was no significant intergroup difference in tooth movement during the experimental exaggerated tooth movement. In comparison with the control group, the baicalin-treated group showed increased OPG expression, suppressed RANKL expression, and significantly fewer TRAP-positive cells in the first molars. The root resorption area was significantly smaller in the baicalin group. CONCLUSIONS Treatment with baicalin prevented root resorption without preventing tooth movement. Baicalin may be useful for the management of root resorption during orthodontic treatment.

Abstract
As any pharmaceutical substance may influence the events associated with orthodontic tooth movement, it is of importance for the clinician to be able to recognize any prospective patient's history and patterns of medicinal consumption. This review presents the effects of various commonly prescribed medications on the rate of orthodontic tooth movement. The article concludes that it remains, to a degree, unclear which types of medication may have a clinically significant effect in everyday clinical scenarios. However, since both prescription and over-the-counter medication use have recently increased significantly among all age groups, good practice suggests that it is important to identify patients consuming medications and consider the possible implications in orthodontic therapy.

Abstract
Summary
Background
Pain relief drugs are used and misused widely and may theoretically affect the events leading to orthodontic tooth movement.
Objective
To systematically investigate and appraise the quality of the available evidence regarding the effect of pain relief medications on the rate of orthodontic tooth movement.
Search methods
Search without restrictions in eight databases (including grey literature) and hand searching until October 2018.
Selection criteria
Animal controlled studies investigating the effect of pain relievers on the rate of orthodontic tooth movement.
Data collection and analysis
Following study retrieval and selection, relevant data were extracted and the risk of bias was assessed using the SYRCLE’s risk of bias tool.
Results
Fourteen studies were finally identified, most of which at unclear risk of bias. Ibuprofen and loxoprofen did not show any significant effects on the rate of orthodontic tooth movement, whereas indomethacin, ketorolac, morphine, and high doses of etoricoxib were found to decrease it. Inconsistent or conflicting effects were noted after the administration of acetaminophen, acetylsalicylic acid, celecoxib, meloxicam, and tramadol. The quality of the available evidence was considered at best as low.
Conclusions
Long-term consumption of pain relievers may affect the rate of orthodontic tooth movement. The orthodontist should be capable of identifying patients taking pain relievers independently of orthodontic treatment and consider the possible implications.
