Controlled synthesis of graphene oxide/silica hybrid nanocomposites for removal of aromatic pollutants in water

The remarkable characteristics of graphene make it a model candidate for boosting the effectiveness of nano-adsorbents with high potential owing to its large surface area, π–π interaction, and accessible functional groups that interact with an adsorbate. However, the stacking of graphene reduces its influence adsorption characteristics and also its practical application. On the other hand, the widespread use of aromatic compounds in the industry has aggravated the contamination of the water environment, and how to effectively remove them has become a research hotspot. Herein, we develop the functionalization of silica nanoparticles on graphene oxide nanosheet (FGS) by a facile, cheap, and efficient synthesis protocol for adsorption of Trypan Blue (TB) and Bisphenol A (BPA). It was demonstrated that chemical activation with KOH at high autoclaving temperature successfully transformed rice husk ash (RHA) into FGS. The graphene oxide layered interlamination was kept open by using SiO₂ to expose the interlayers' strong adsorption sites. XRD, EDX, FTIR, Raman spectroscopy, SEM, HR-TEM, and BET surface area are used to investigate the chemical composition, structure, morphology, and textural nature of the as-produced FGS hybrid nanocomposite. The various oxygen-containing functional groups of the hybrid nanocomposites resulted in a significantly increased adsorption capacity, according to experimental findings. In addition, FGS2, the best composite, has a specific surface area of 1768 m²g⁻¹. Based on Langmuir isotherms, the maximal TB dye and BPA removal capacity attained after 30 min were 455 and 500 mg/g, respectively. The Langmuir isotherm model, a pseudo-second-order kinetic model, and an intraparticle diffusion model have all been used to provide mechanistic insights into the adsorption process. This suggests that BPA and TB adsorption on FGS2 is mostly chemically regulated monolayer adsorption. Due to its unique sp²-hybridized single-atom-layer structure, the exposed graphene oxide nanosheets' extremely hydrophobic effect, hydrogen bonding, and strong—electron donor–acceptor interaction contributed to their improved adsorption of BPA and TB. According to adsorption thermodynamics, FGS2 adsorption of TB and BPA is a spontaneous exothermic reaction that is aided by lowering the temperature. For adsorption-based wastewater cleanup, the produced nanocomposites with a regulated amount of carbon and silica in the form of graphene oxide and silica can be used. These findings suggest that functionalized GO/SiO₂ hybrid nanocomposites could be a viable sorbent for the efficient and cost-effective removal of aromatic chemicals from wastewater.

Epiretinal large disc of blue-stained lyophilized amniotic membrane to treat complex macular holes: a 1-year follow-up

PURPOSE

To report the long-term outcomes of large diameter epiretinal lyophilized amniotic membranes (lAMs) in recurrent or persistent macular holes (MHs) with or without rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD), in a prospective interventional case series.

METHODS

Ten eyes of 10 patients underwent pars plana vitrectomy for MH-associated RRD (n = 5) or persistent MH without RRD (n = 5), in a university Hospital. A 3 or 4 mm diameter disc of lAM, stained with 0.06% trypan blue, was inserted with a catheter through a sclerotomy and positioned over the MH. Gas or silicone-oil tamponade was used. At 1 year, the main outcome was anatomic success defined as complete MH closure. Secondary outcomes were best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) recovery, changes in ellipsoid zone (EZ) and external limiting membrane (ELM) defects, complications. Mean follow-up was 13.8 ± 2.9 months (range, 12-18).

RESULTS

Mean baseline data were minimum and maximum diameters, respectively, 945 ± 330 and 1507 ± 717 μm; axial length 26.58 ± 3.38 mm; and number of prior surgeries 1.4 ± 0.96. At 1 year, anatomic success was achieved in eight eyes (80%), and two had reduced diameter of MH. All RRDs were reattached without recurrence. Mean logMAR BCVA improved from 1.92 ± 0.58 to 1.17 ± 0.57 (p < 0.001), with nine eyes (90%) achieving ≥0.3 logMAR improvement. Mean EZ and ELM defects decreased (p = 0.004, p = 0.003, respectively). Postoperative complications were RRD (n = 1) reattached by subsequent surgery, lAM slightly retracted under silicone (n = 1), foveal atrophy after early lAM displacement (n = 1).

CONCLUSION

A 1-year follow-up highlighted that epiretinal large discs of blue-stained lAM can help safely close refractory MHs, and provide satisfactory visual recovery.

Optimization of Direct Blue-14 dye degradation by Bacillus fermus (Kx898362) an alkaliphilic plant endophyte and assessment of degraded metabolite toxicity

Alkaliphilic bacteria possesses the ability to survive in the extreme conditions with high salt concentrations. The adaptability of alkaliphilic bacteria to extreme conditions has made them predominant degrader in the field of biodegradation. A moderately alkaliphilic endophyte was isolated from Centella asiatica with a potential to degrade a di-azo dye Direct Blue-14(DB-14). The isolate was identified as Bacillus fermus with 97% similarity strain Xmb064. On optimization, maximum of 92.76% biodegradation was attained with dye concentration at 68.78 ppm supplemented with 1 g of sucrose and 2.5% (v/v) of inoculum for 72 h incubation. Characterization of the biodegraded product carried out using UV-vis spectrophotometry, FT-IR and LC-MS confirmed the destabilization of di-azo bond followed with the degradation of DB-14. Cytogenotoxicity studies revealed the biodegraded products to be less toxic. The current study is the first report on the optimization, biotransformation and cytogenotoxicity of DB-14 by B. fermus strain Centella.
