Medical imaging applied to heritage

The use of imaging has transformed the study of cultural heritage artefacts in the same way that medical imaging has transformed medicine. X-ray-based techniques are common in both medical and heritage imaging. Optical imaging, including scientific photography and spectral imaging techniques, is also common in both domains. Some common medical imaging methods such as ultrasound and MRI have not yet found routine application in heritage, whereas other methods such as imaging with charged and uncharged particles and 3D surface imaging are more common in heritage. Here, we review the field of heritage imaging from the point of view of medical imaging and include some classic challenges of heritage imaging such as reading the text on burnt scrolls, identifying underdrawings in paintings, and CT scanning of mummies, an ancient calculating device and sealed documents. We show how hyperspectral imaging can offer insight into the drawing techniques of Leonardo da Vinci and explain how laparoscopy has identified the method of construction of a 500-year-old pop-up anatomical text book.

Immersive Virtual Reality Experience of Historical Events Using Haptics and Locomotion Simulation

Virtual reality (VR) and 3D modeling technologies have become increasingly powerful tools for multiple fields, such as education, architecture, and cultural heritage. Museums are no longer places for only placing and exhibiting collections and artworks. They use such technologies to offer a new way of communicating art and history with their visitors. In this paper, we present the initial results of a proposed workflow towards highlighting and interpreting a historic event with the use of an immersive and interactive VR experience and the utilization of multiple senses of the user. Using a treadmill for navigating and haptic gloves for interacting with the environment, combined with the detailed 3D models, deepens the sense of immersion. The results of our study show that engaging multiple senses and visual manipulation in an immersive 3D environment can effectively enhance the perception of visual realism and evoke a stronger sense of presence, amplifying the educational and informative experience in a museum.

Artificial Intelligence and Precision Medicine: A Perspective

This article aims to present how the advanced solutions of artificial intelligence and precision medicine work together to refine medical management. Multi-omics seems the most suitable approach for biological analysis of data on precision medicine and artificial intelligence. We searched PubMed and Google Scholar databases to collect pertinent articles appearing up to 5 March 2021. Genetics, oncology, radiology, and the recent coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic were chosen as representative fields addressing the cross-compliance of artificial intelligence (AI) and precision medicine based on the highest number of articles, topicality, and interconnectedness of the issue. Overall, we identified and perused 1572 articles. AI is a breakthrough that takes part in shaping the Fourth Industrial Revolution in medicine and health care, changing the long-time accepted diagnostic and treatment regimens and approaches. AI-based link prediction models may be outstandingly helpful in the literature search for drug repurposing or finding new therapeutical modalities in rapidly erupting wide-scale diseases such as the recent COVID-19.

A Model of the Cosmos in the ancient Greek Antikythera Mechanism

The Antikythera Mechanism, an ancient Greek astronomical calculator, has challenged researchers since its discovery in 1901. Now split into 82 fragments, only a third of the original survives, including 30 corroded bronze gearwheels. Microfocus X-ray Computed Tomography (X-ray CT) in 2005 decoded the structure of the rear of the machine but the front remained largely unresolved. X-ray CT also revealed inscriptions describing the motions of the Sun, Moon and all five planets known in antiquity and how they were displayed at the front as an ancient Greek Cosmos. Inscriptions specifying complex planetary periods forced new thinking on the mechanization of this Cosmos, but no previous reconstruction has come close to matching the data. Our discoveries lead to a new model, satisfying and explaining the evidence. Solving this complex 3D puzzle reveals a creation of genius—combining cycles from Babylonian astronomy, mathematics from Plato’s Academy and ancient Greek astronomical theories.
