Clinical nurses' awareness and caring experiences for patients with cervical cancer: A qualitative study

"Maintain Professionalism": Nurses' Experiences in Caring for Patients with Malignant Fungating Wounds in Taiwan

CONTEXT

Malignant fungating wounds (MFWs) occur among 5%-15% of patients with terminal cancers, the uncontrollable symptoms result in serious psychosocial issues, thereby reducing the quality of life. Caring for MFWs impacts caregivers, including healthcare personnel. While existing studies are patient-focused, the impact of care experiences and associated support for nurses has not been examined.

OBJECTIVES

To explore the experiences in caring for patients with MFWs among nurses in Taiwan.

METHODS

Qualitative study with a phenomenological approach by thematic analysis was conducted with semi-structured interviews. About 15 nurses who cared for patients with MFWs at local district hospitals in Southern Taiwan.

RESULTS

Four themes were identified to describe the phenomenon: (1) Fear of Unpredictability (2) Maintaining Professionalism (3) Feeling Helpless (4) Rationalizing the Negatives. The themes illustrated the distress of managing physical symptoms and highlighted how nurses strived to promote comfort for patients. Nurses felt helpless about the incurable nature of MFWs but found a way to suppress their feelings.

CONCLUSION

The findings suggested the need for addressing the emotional well-being of nurses who take care of patients with MFWs. Future studies should identify effective coping strategies for nurses' health when caring for this population.

Nurses and doctors 's awareness and knowledge towards treatment and care of cervical cancer patients: a cross-sectional study

AIM

The present study aimed to investigate healthcare professionals' perceptions and experiences in caring for cervical cancer patients. The present study was also designed to assess the healthcare professionals' attitudes toward cervical cancer screening and its prevention.

METHODS

A cross-sectional quantitative descriptive study was conducted, and 540 participants (240 nurses and 300 doctors), from different hospitals of Pakistan have been selected and interviewed.

RESULTS

Data was collected using structured questionnaires and SPSS was used to statistically analyze the data. Participants in the present study are questioned with respect to age, gender, and work experience. The mean age of the participants is 35 years. Among them, 41% of participants are < 35 years of age and 59% are > 35 years of age. In the case of gender, 22% of participants are males and 78% are females. 47% of the participants have work experience < 20 years and 53% have work experience > 20 years. Data from the present study showed that most of the nurses are less educated (basic education of middle and matric degree) with a simple diploma in nursing and midwifery. Nurses and doctors do not have any knowledge/experience of the patient's psychological counselling. Participants are also questioned with respect to HPV vaccination, 39% of nurses and 62% of doctors are vaccinated. The difference in vaccination frequency of participants was observed as statistically significant (p < 0.0001). In the case of treatment modalities, doctors have statistically more knowledge about the pap smear (p < 0.0001), cervical biopsy (p < 0.0001), colposcopy (p < 0.0001), and visual application after acetic acid application (p < 0.0001) compared to nurses. Data analysis showed that Pap smear was performed significantly higher in married females compared to unmarried (p < 0.0001).

CONCLUSION

our study provides a comprehensive and in-depth perspective of the nurses and doctors for cervical cancer patients. Cervical cancer prevalence is increasing due to inadequate knowledge and awareness among healthcare professionals. Improvement can be brought about by the regular use of treatment modalities in unmarried females also.

Introduction

Mind-body therapies, such as guided imagery relaxation, which are among the main integrative practices used by cancer patients, are essential for maintaining a healthy balance between sympathetic and parasympathetic arousal in the brain.

Objective

To evaluate the effect of guided image relaxation, with the use of virtual reality, on the health-related quality of life of women with cervical cancer undergoing concomitant treatment with chemoradiotherapy.

Materials and Method

A quasi-experimental study, carried out in an oncology referral hospital in southern Brazil, from October 2019 to January 2021. 52 women participated, divided into two groups, experimental (relaxation intervention guided by imagery with virtual reality), and control (default routine). The Functional instrument was used to assess health-related quality of life scores. Assessment of Cancer therapy cervix cancer, applied before, 14 days after and at the end of treatment, in approximately 35 days. The analyzes were performed using the mixed generalized linear model, with an autoregressive covariance matrix of order 1, and the significance was confirmed by the Sidak test.

Results

There was a statistically significant difference for the experimental group in the physical (p =0.02), functional (p =0.00), specific symptoms of cervical cancer and treatment effects (p =0.03) and overall quality of life (p =0.02).

Conclusion

Guided Image Relaxation contributed to an improvement in the Health- Related Quality of Life of patients with cervical cancer during treatment with chemoradiation.

The Symptom Experience and Self-management Strategies of Women Undergoing Cervical Cancer Treatment: A Qualitative Study

BACKGROUND

Cervical cancer treatment modalities, such as surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, and brachytherapy, often result in short- and long-term adverse effects such as nausea, fatigue, and sexual dysfunction. Chemotherapy and radiation are typically provided on an outpatient basis, requiring women to be more active in self-managing their symptoms at home.

OBJECTIVE

The aim of this study was to explore how women with cervical cancer experience symptoms and manage daily life during treatment.

METHODS

Individual interviews with 10 women diagnosed with cervical cancer and undergoing curative concurrent chemotherapy and radiation were carried out. Data analysis was conducted using a phenomenological-hermeneutic perspective, inspired by Ricoeur.

RESULTS

Three themes were identified based on the interviews: (1) new life perspectives, (2) suffering in silence, and (3) enhanced symptom self-management strategies.

CONCLUSION

Diagnosis and treatment create an opportunity for the women to critically reflect on their lives and to develop new life perspectives. During treatment, a mental transformation involving the use of various individual social, mental, and physical coping strategies allowed the women to manage their daily lives. This enabled self-management strategies, resulting in maintaining a sense of normalcy, trying to defy the adverse effects, and prioritizing themselves, their families, and the treatment.

IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE

Women with cervical cancer undergoing oncological treatment need more specific and detailed information about the course of treatment, symptom management, adverse effects, and psychological reactions to better manage their daily lives. Healthcare professionals play a crucial role in supporting and guiding the women and in ensuring optimal symptom management.
