Denoising and uncertainty estimation in parameter mapping with approximate Bayesian deep image priors

PURPOSE

To mitigate the problem of noisy parameter maps with high uncertainties by casting parameter mapping as a denoising task based on Deep Image Priors.

METHODS

We extend the concept of denoising with Deep Image Prior (DIP) into parameter mapping by treating the output of an image-generating network as a parametrization of tissue parameter maps. The method implicitly denoises the parameter mapping process by filtering low-level image features with an untrained convolutional neural network (CNN). Our implementation includes uncertainty estimation from Bernoulli approximate variational inference, implemented with MC dropout, which provides model uncertainty in each voxel of the denoised parameter maps. The method is modular, so the specifics of different applications (e.g., T1 mapping) separate into application-specific signal equation blocks. We evaluate the method on variable flip angle T1 mapping, multi-echo T2 mapping, and apparent diffusion coefficient mapping.

RESULTS

We found that deep image prior adapts successfully to several applications in parameter mapping. In all evaluations, the method produces noise-reduced parameter maps with decreased uncertainty compared to conventional methods. The downsides of the proposed method are the long computational time and the introduction of some bias from the denoising prior.

CONCLUSION

DIP successfully denoise the parameter mapping process and applies to several applications with limited hyperparameter tuning. Further, it is easy to implement since DIP methods do not use network training data. Although time-consuming, uncertainty information from MC dropout makes the method more robust and provides useful information when properly calibrated.

3D model-based super-resolution motion-corrected cardiac T1 mapping

Objective. To provide 3D high-resolution cardiac T1 maps using model-based super-resolution reconstruction (SRR).Approach. Due to signal-to-noise ratio limitations and the motion of the heart during imaging, often 2D T1 maps with only low through-plane resolution (i.e. slice thickness of 6-8 mm) can be obtained. Here, a model-based SRR approach is presented, which combines multiple stacks of 2D acquisitions with 6-8 mm slice thickness and generates 3D high-resolution T1 maps with a slice thickness of 1.5-2 mm. Every stack was acquired in a different breath hold (BH) and any misalignment between BH was corrected retrospectively. The novelty of the proposed approach is the BH correction and the application of model-based SRR on cardiac T1 Mapping. The proposed approach was evaluated in numerical simulations and phantom experiments and demonstrated in four healthy subjects.Main results. Alignment of BH states was essential for SRR even in healthy volunteers. In simulations, respiratory motion could be estimated with an RMS error of 0.18 ± 0.28 mm. SRR improved the visualization of small structures. High accuracy and precision (average standard deviation of 69.62 ms) of the T1 values was ensured by SRR while the detectability of small structures increased by 40%.Significance. The proposed SRR approach provided T1 maps with high in-plane and high through-plane resolution (1.3 × 1.3 × 1.5-2 mm³). The approach led to improvements in the visualization of small structures and precise T1 values.

Cartesian dictionary-based native T1 and T2 mapping of the myocardium

PURPOSE

To implement and evaluate a new dictionary-based technique for native myocardial T₁ and T₂ mapping using Cartesian sampling.

METHODS

The proposed technique (Multimapping) consisted of single-shot Cartesian image acquisitions in 10 consecutive cardiac cycles, with inversion pulses in cycle 1 and 5, and T₂ preparation (TE: 30 ms, 50 ms, and 70 ms) in cycles 8-10. Multimapping was simulated for different T₁ and T₂ , where entries corresponding to the k-space centers were matched to acquired data. Experiments were performed in a phantom, 16 healthy subjects, and 3 patients with cardiovascular disease.

RESULTS

Multimapping phantom measurements showed good agreement with reference values for both T₁ and T₂ , with no discernable heart-rate dependency for T₁ and T₂ within the range of myocardium. In vivo mean T₁ in healthy subjects was significantly higher using Multimapping (T₁ = 1114 ± 14 ms) compared to the reference (T₁ = 991 ± 26 ms) (p < 0.01). Mean Multimapping T₂ (47.1 ± 1.3 ms) and T₂ spatial variability (5.8 ± 1.0 ms) was significantly lower compared to the reference (T₂ = 54.7 ± 2.2 ms, p < 0.001; spatial variability = 8.4 ± 2.0 ms, p < 0.01). Increased T₁ and T₂ was detected in all patients using Multimapping.

CONCLUSIONS

Multimapping allows for simultaneous native myocardial T₁ and T₂ mapping with a conventional Cartesian trajectory, demonstrating promising in vivo image quality and parameter quantification results.

Synergistic Fabrication of Dose-Response Chitosan/Dextran/β-Glycerophosphate Injectable Hydrogel as Cell Delivery Carrier for Cardiac Healing After Acute Myocardial Infarction

The human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) therapy offering an encouraging the new methods to establish the conveying on the chitosan (C)/dextran (D)/β-glycerophosphate (β-GP) loaded with hMSCs to enhance the acute myocardial infarctions. The synthesized hMSCs-CD@β-GP system displayed the ratio of determination modules, size of the pore, absorbency, and the swellings ratio in the assortment of the 65 ka, 149 ± 39.8 µm, 92.2%, 42 ± 1.38, and 29 ± 1.9, respectively. The fabricated hMSCs-CD@β-GP was highly stable and physicochemical investigated and confirmed the suitability of the materials for cardiac regeneration applications. The in vitro examinations of the injectable hydrogels with hMSCs-CD@β-GP have recognized that the improved survival rate of the cells, increased the pro-inflammatory expressions factors, pro-angiogenic factors analysis confirmed the promising results of the ejection of fractions, fibrosis area, vessel density with decreased infractions size, with suggesting that the remarkable improvement of the heart regenerative function after myocardial infarctions. The new synergistic approach of the injectable hydrogels with hMSCs could able appropriate for the effective treatment of cardiac therapies after acute myocardial infarctions.
