High salt diet impairs dermal tissue remodeling in a mouse model of IMQ induced dermatitis

A review of the world's salt reduction policies and strategies - preparing for the upcoming year 2025

Excessive consumption of dietary sodium is a significant contributor to non-communicable diseases, including hypertension and cardiovascular disease. There is now a global consensus that regulating salt intake is among the most cost-effective measures for enhancing public health. More than half of the countries worldwide have implemented multiple strategies to decrease salt consumption. Nevertheless, a report on sodium intake reduction published by the World Health Organization revealed that the world is off-track to meet its targeted reduction of 30% by 2025. The global situation regarding salt reduction remains concerning. This review will center on domestic and international salt reduction policies, as well as diverse strategies, given the detrimental effects of excessive dietary salt intake and the existing global salt intake scenario. Besides, we used visualization software to analyze the literature related to salt reduction research in the last five years to explore the research hotspots in this field. Our objective is to enhance public awareness regarding the imperative of reducing salt intake and promoting the active implementation of diverse salt reduction policies.

Morphology as indicator of adaptive changes of model tissues in osmotically and chemically changing environments

We investigate the formation and maintenance of the homeostatic state in the case of 2D epithelial tissues following an induction of hyperosmotic conditions, using media enriched with 80 to 320 mOsm of mannitol, NaCl, and urea. We characterise the changes in the tissue immediately after the osmotic shock, and follow it until the new homeostatic state is formed. We characterise changes in cooperative motility and proliferation pressure in the tissue upon treatment with the help of a theoretical model based on the delayed Fisher-Kolmogorov formalism, where the delay in density evolution is induced by the the finite time of the cell division. Finally we explore the adaptation of the homeostatic tissue to highly elevated osmotic conditions by evaluating the morphology and topology of cells after 20 days in incubation. We find that hyperosmotic environments together with changes in the extracellular matrix induce different mechanical states in viable tissues, where only some remain functional. The perspective is a relation between tissue topology and function, which could be explored beyond the scope of this manuscript. High-salt diet contributes to excess oxidative stress and abnormal metabolism in mouse ovaries

High-salt diets (HSDs) are associated with elevated levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which play a key role in ovarian disorders. However, it is not yet clear whether HSDs impact ovarian redox balance and metabolism. Accordingly, in this study, we analyzed the effect of HSDs on ovarian redox balance by biochemical analysis and further dissected its possible mechanism by metabolic analysis combined with correlation network method. We found that ROS and H₂ O₂ levels were significantly increased in the ovarian tissue of mice receiving an HSD for 4 weeks. The enhanced activity of NADPH oxidase may contribute to an increase in ROS in ovarian tissue after excessive salt consumption. Meanwhile, the activities of key antioxidant enzymes, including superoxide dismutase 2, glutathione peroxidase, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, and 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase increased significantly. The apparent activation of antioxidant defense appeared insufficient as the glutathione, GSH/GSSG ratio, and NADPH/NADP⁺ ratio decreased significantly. In addition, HSDs significantly altered the metabolic patterns of ovarian tissue in mice, and pathways were mainly enriched in fatty acid metabolism. Arachidonic acid was an altered hub metabolite according to Pearson correlation network analysis. Mechanistically, an HSD increased the concentration of arachidonic acid in ovarian tissue, inducing high NADPH oxidase activity, which increased the levels of ROS and H₂ O₂ . Our results indicate that HSDs can lead to increased oxidative stress and dramatically alter the metabolic patterns in mouse ovarian tissues.
