Evaluation of YouTube videos for patients' education on periradicular surgery

Reliability of information in YouTube™ videos on types of root resorption and related stimulating factors

BACKGROUND/AIM

Root resorption occurs for various reasons and can also be seen as a treatment complication in orthodontics. This study aimed to assess the reliability and quality of YouTube™ videos on root resorption and to assess whether the videos referred to orthodontic treatment and other stimulation factors.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

YouTube was searched using the keyword 'root resorption', which is the most searched term on Google Trends. The first 200 videos identified using the default filter 'sort by relevance' were used. Information such as the source, type, duration, and number of likes were recorded. Videos were analyzed using a 23-point content scale related to root resorption and divided into groups (poor, moderate, and excellent) based on the Global Quality Score.

RESULTS

A total of 95 videos were included in the study. Most were uploaded by dentists or dental clinics (n = 64, 67.4%). The mean number of days since upload was 1536 ± 1254, and the mean duration was 5 ± 4 min. The videos had a mean of 80 ± 515 likes and 7043 ± 35,382 views, and a mean viewing rate of 1131.71 ± 8736.83. The most discussed topic was radiographic signs of root resorption. While the highest content score for the videos was 21, the average score was only 4. The mean GQS was 2 ± 1. Grouping videos by GQS showed that 55 (57.9%) were poor, 38 (40%) were moderate, and 2 (2.1%) were excellent. There was a significant relationship between videos that mentioned orthodontics (n = 62; 65.3%) and higher GQS (p = .036), and a significant difference was between GQS groups for total content levels (p < .001).

CONCLUSIONS

YouTube videos related to root resorption lack sufficient information and clarity, and their quality needs to be improved. Oral health professionals should strive to produce higher-quality videos.

Dacryocystorhinostomy videos on YouTube as a source of patient education

BACKGROUND

To determine the quality and reliability of DCR YouTube videos as patient education resources and identify any associated factors predictive of video quality.

METHODS

A YouTube search was conducted using the terms "Dacryocystorhinostomy, DCR, surgery" on 12th of January 2022, with the first 50 relevant videos selected for inclusion. For each video, the following was collected: video hyperlink, title, total views, months since the video was posted, video length, total likes/dislikes, authorship (i.e. surgeon, patient experience or media companies) and number of comments. The videos were graded independently by a resident, a registrar and an oculoplastic surgeon using three validated scoring systems: the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), DISCERN, and Health on the Net (HON).

RESULTS

The average number of video views was 22,992, with the mean length being 488.12 s and an average of 18 comments per video. The consensus JAMA, DISCERN and HON scores were 2.1 ± 0.6, 29.1 ± 8.8 and 2.7 ± 1.0, respectively. This indicated that the included videos were of a low quality, however, only DISCERN scores had good interobserver similarity. Videos posted by surgeons were superior to non-surgeons when considering mean JAMA and HON scores. No other factors were associated with the quality of educational content.

CONCLUSION

The quality and reliability of DCR related content for patient education is relatively low. Based on this study's findings, patients should be encouraged to view videos created by surgeons or specialists in preference to other sources on YouTube.

YouTube as a source of information about rubber dam: quality and content analysis

Objectives

This study aimed to evaluate the content, quality and demographics of YouTube videos about rubber dam as an information source for clinicians and dental students.

Materials and Methods

"Rubber dam," "rubber dam application," "dental isolation," "rubber dam isolation," and "dental dam" were determined as keywords for the detection of YouTube videos related to rubber dam. Seventy 3 videos were evaluated and a total of 34 videos met the inclusion criteria. All selected videos were evaluated according to 8 parameters. The videos were scored 1 if the videos contained information about the selected parameter, but if the videos did not contain enough information, they were scored 0. The data were statistically analyzed with the analysis of variance and post hoc Tukey test (p < 0.05).

Results

We found that 41% of the videos have poor, 47% have moderate, and 12% have good information. There is a statistically significant difference in time between poor and good information content (p < 0.05). There is a statistically significant difference between the poor and good information in the video information and quality index 1.

Conclusions

Rubber dam-related videos available on YouTube are generally moderately informed and insufficient. YouTube is currently not sufficient as a source of information for patients and clinicians at the moment. The YouTube platform should be developed and enriched with quality information on current and dental issues.

Assessment of usefulness and reliability of YouTube™ videos on denture care

INTRODUCTION

The world's population is in a demographic transition with a rising ageing population. Tooth loss is frequent among older people resulting in the replacement of natural teeth using complete or partial dentures. YouTube™ is the second most popular website in the world and is being increasingly used to access health care information. The aim of this study is to evaluate the usefulness and reliability of the information in YouTube™ videos regarding denture care.

METHODS

The YouTube™ website was used to systematically search for videos using the keyword 'denture care'. Videos meeting the eligibility criteria were assessed separately by two independent researchers. The usefulness of the videos was assessed using the Global Quality Assessment Scale and a customized usefulness scoring scheme. Based on these scores, the usefulness of the videos was categorized as low, medium and high. A modified DISCERN tool (mDISCERN) was used for assessing reliability with scores ranging from 0 to 5. Other video characteristics like source/ownership of the videos, duration, views, likes, dislikes, number of days posted, like ratio, view ratio, interaction index and Video Power Index were also obtained. Statistical analysis was carried out using the Kruskal-Wallis test, Spearman correlation test and multiple linear regression analysis.

RESULTS

A total of 120 videos were included. Based on the usefulness score, the usefulness of 65.8% of videos were classified as low, 32.5% were medium and 1.6% had high usefulness. The mDISCERN score for 74.2% of videos was 2 or below 2 indicating that the majority of videos had low reliability. Video characteristics did not differ significantly according to the usefulness of videos. Videos uploaded by dentists or dental hygienists had significantly higher usefulness scores (p < 0.001) in comparison to videos uploaded by other sources. However, reliability scores did not differ based on the sources of the videos. Video reliability was found to have a significant (B = 2.08, p < 0.001) positive association with video usefulness.

CONCLUSION

YouTube™ cannot be recommended as the only source of information for denture care as most videos received low usefulness and reliability ratings in our study. Dentists and dental health professionals could take an active part in enhancing denture care-related content on YouTube™ and enable patients to have adequate and reliable knowledge of denture hygiene practices.

The new checklist to evaluate educational value of YouTube surgical videos of transurethral resection of the prostate

Background

Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) is a widespread, effective way to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Many medical students and junior clinicians increasingly turn to easily accessible online resources to learn this technique, such as videos on YouTube. This study assessed the educational value of YouTube videos about TURP, which are popular among many young surgeons.

Methods

We searched YouTube as of August 2, 2022 for videos fulfilling the search terms "transurethral resection of the prostate", "benign prostatic hyperplasia", "BPH", "TURP", "benign prostatic enlargement", "bladder outlet obstruction" and "lower urinary tract symptom". We assessed the educational value of the identified videos using a custom-designed checklist.

Results

We identified 47 relevant videos, 20 of which were posted after July 1, 2020. The average number of views was 576,379±208,535 (range, 54-1,385,713). The average quality score of the videos was 7.38±2.53 (range, 4-12) on a 15-point scale, and 20 were judged to be of low educational quality. Quality scores correlated positively with the number of likes (R=0.596, P<0.01).

Conclusions

The educational value of most TURP videos on YouTube appears to be low, with most lacking detailed explanations of preoperative preparations and the surgical procedure. High-quality video resources about TURP need to be developed for medical students and junior surgeons. Standard quality criteria should also be developed and disseminated to ensure the production of accurate learning resources for junior clinicians.

Analysis of YouTube content on substance use disorder treatment and recovery

BACKGROUND AND AIM

Emerging literature suggests the role of social media in substance use disorders (SUD). This study aimed to explore the content of YouTube videos for persons on SUD treatment/recovery, describing the users' exposure and engagement metrics and understanding viewers' perspectives.

METHODS

We generated a set of 10 key phrases to search on YouTube. Eighty eligible videos were analyzed using a mixed-methods approach. Content analysis of all videos and thematic analysis of 30 videos were done using the three most viewed videos from each key phrase. The reliability of videos was assessed using a modified DISCERN. The total number of views, likes, dislikes, and comments were noted and created engagement metrics. The linguistic analysis of viewers' comments was done to assess their perspectives.

RESULTS

Sixty-three (78.8%) videos were from the US, and 59 (73.8%) were intended for persons or families with substance misuse. Persons in recovery uploaded 23 (28.7%) videos. We identified five themes - reasons for using drugs, symptoms of addiction, consequences of drug use, how to stop drug use, and expressed tone in the language. The positivity and relative positivity ratios were highest for videos developed by persons in recovery. There was a negative correlation between the relative positivity ratio and content fostering internalized stigma. Words with negative emotional experiences dominated the viewers' comments.

CONCLUSION

YouTube content on SUD treatment and recovery is popular and revolves around the biopsychosocial understanding of addiction. There is an urgent need for a language policy and regulation of non-scientific content.

Evaluation of the reliability and quality of YouTube videos as a source of information for transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation

Background

YouTube plays an influential role in disseminating health-related information in the digital age. This study aimed to evaluate YouTube videos on transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) in terms of their information value and quality.

Methods

In this descriptive study, we ranked the first 100 videos that met the inclusion criteria using the search term "transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation" on October 30, 2022. These videos were classified according to the number of views, likes, dislikes, comments, duration, popularity and content categories. Reliability, quality, and accuracy of the videos were assessed using the Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA) Benchmark Criteria and Modified DISCERN Questionnaire and Global Quality Score (GQS). Video popularity were calculated by the Video Power Index (VPI).

Results

Based on the GQS results, we found that 59, 27, and 14 videos had low, intermediate, and high quality, respectively. In addition, based on the JAMA results, 79 and 21 videos had poor and high reliability, respectively. No statistically significant difference was found between the JAMA, modified DISCERN and GQS scores in terms of the sources of videos (p = 0.226, p = 0.115, p = 0.812). Notably, there was a weak positive correlation between the JAMA scores and the number of views (r = 0.204, p = 0.041).

Conclusion

According to our study results, most YouTube videos on TENS were of low quality and reliability. Additionally, most videos were uploaded from sources created by doctors; the most frequently found content was about the TENS procedure, and content on complications of the procedure became less frequent as the videos became more recent. In particular, it was found that videos uploaded by academics have longer duration. It has been found that reliable videos with high JAMA scores also have high number of views. Accordingly, it can be concluded that videos with higher quality and more reliability that are created by healthcare providers will be more useful for patients seeking information about TENS.

Quality and Reliability Analysis of YouTube Videos on Magnetic Resonance Imaging Claustrophobia

Aim Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-induced anxiety is not infrequent with a reported incidence as high as 37% and the rate of failed MRI imaging due to claustrophobia ranges between 0.5% and 14.5%. The objective of this study was to evaluate the quality and reliability of YouTube^TM videos on MRI claustrophobia. Methods Sixty-five videos were included in the final analysis. Video information analyzed included video length (minutes), video content, qualification of the video uploaders, time of upload, time since upload, the number of total views and the mean daily views, and like counts. We divided the videos according to the uploaders into professional and non-professional groups and further grouped the videos as useful and misleading. Data obtained from the videos were evaluated with three tools including subjective evaluation, Quality Criteria for Consumer Health Information (DISCERN), and Global Quality Scale (GQS) tools. Results The mean video duration was found as 4.14±4.45 minutes. The mean view count was 104.59±408,788.68 and the mean like count was found as 272.55±1096.25. Seventeen (26.15%) videos were uploaded by professionals and 48 (73.85%) by non-professionals. Twenty-eight (43.08%) of the videos were useful and 37 (56.92%) were useless. The mean DISCERN and GQS scores were statistically significantly higher in the professional videos compared to the non-professional videos and in useful videos compared to non-useful videos (for all, p<0.001). Conclusion A majority of the YouTube^TM videos concerning MRI claustrophobia were uploaded by non-professionals. Physicians and other healthcare personnel should be encouraged to provide useful and accurate videos and to direct patients appropriately.

Is the YouTube™ a useful resource of information about orthognathic surgery?: A cross-sectional study

PURPOSE

YouTube™ has become a widely used resource of information about health-related topics nowadays. This cross-sectional study has aimed to analyze the content and quality of YouTube™ videos on orthognathic surgery.

METHODS

In our study, six orthognathic surgery-related keywords (Le Fort I osteotomy, sagittal split osteotomy, jaw surgery, jaw correction surgery, orthodontic surgery, and orthognathic surgery) were used to search on YouTube™. Only the videos in English, which had visually and audibly acceptable quality and were mainly about orthognathic surgery, were chosen from the videos. A total of 360 videos were selected, the top 60 videos for each search term, and sorted according to view count. Of these videos, the first 60 videos were analyzed. Video source (independent or educational), duration, number of views, likes, and dislikes were recorded for each video. Moreover, two impartial observers evaluated the visibility, popularity, quality, usefulness, and reliability of the videos.

RESULTS

41 of 60 videos were of independent sources while 19 of them were of educational origin. Information content of the videos was found to be insufficient. No significant difference was determined between independent and educational videos in terms of popularity, visibility, usefulness and quality analysis of the videos (p > 0.05), but a significant difference was found in terms of reliability values (p < 0.05).

CONCLUSION

It can be said that YouTube™ videos were not a reliable and accurate enough source of information when evaluated in terms of orthognathic surgery-related content and quality. Therefore, the information content provided by specialists and health institutions, in particular, should be increased in number, thereby making access to better quality information on orthognathic surgery easy for patients.

Assessment of the educational value of endodontic access cavity preparation YouTube video as a learning resource for students

Objective

To evaluate the educational value of YouTube as a learning tool for dental students regarding endodontic access cavity preparation.

Methods and findings

YouTube search was made for videos related to endodontic access cavity preparation using specific terms. After exclusions, 41 videos were chosen and assessed for tooth type, video length, days since upload, country of origin, number of views and likes, source of authorship, and viewing rate. To grade the content of videos, a usefulness score with seven elements was developed. Each element was given a score of 0 or 1. Statistical tests were run by using Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests (SPSS Inc, Chicago, IL, USA) at a 5% significance level. The videos received a mean of 181198.5 views with a mean duration of 686.1 seconds. The mean number of “likes” was 1047.8. Almost half of the videos covered content related to molar teeth. Most videos were provided by health care professionals with almost 50% uploaded from India. The mean usefulness score was 4.29 (range: 1–7) and the most discussed elements were description, instruments used, access cavity demonstration, and evaluation criteria. About a quarter of the videos were classified as good, while 46.3% as moderate and 29.3% as poor. Among the content usefulness categories, no difference was found in the video demographics (p>0.05) except “days since upload” (p = 0.018) in which good quality videos were found to have the highest median. Moreover, although insignificant, good videos were found to have the longest duration and lowest number of views, likes, and viewing rate. The mean usefulness score of videos released during the COVID-19 pandemic was lower than that for pre-pandemic videos (p = 0.042), and videos uploaded by academic institutions had a higher mean usefulness score than videos uploaded by health care professionals (p<0.001).

Conclusions

Information on endodontic access cavity preparation is not comprehensive in most of the reviewed YouTube videos and could be of low educational value.
