Evaluating the effects of e-health interventions on mental health outcomes in individuals with breast cancer: A systematic review

Individuals with breast cancer (BC) often experience significant psychological distress throughout their cancer journey, and while e-health interventions show promise, evidence of their effectiveness remains limited. This systematic review addresses this gap by evaluating the effects of e-health interventions on mental health outcomes among individuals with BC. This study followed PRISMA guidelines and was registered with PROSPERO (CRD42024543722). A comprehensive search was conducted from July to August 2024, using Scopus, Web of Science, and Ovid Medline databases. Studies were included if they: (1) applied experimental study designs, (2) implemented e-health interventions to improve mental health outcomes, and (3) focused specifically on individuals with BC. Two reviewers used Rayyan software and the predefined criteria for article exclusion and inclusion. Seven studies, predominantly from countries with high BC incidence rates and advanced healthcare systems, met the inclusion criteria. Thematic analysis revealed that e-health interventions improved psychological well-being, coping strategies, quality of life, physical health, and cancer-specific symptom management. However, diverse intervention designs and measurement tools hindered cross-study comparison. Many studies focused on general mental health measures, neglecting crucial aspects such as help-seeking behaviors, cognitive function, and concerns about cancer recurrence. Future research should standardize intervention protocols, ensure comprehensive outcome reporting, and expand mental health measures.

The Evolving Landscape of Cervical Cancer: Breakthroughs in Screening and Therapy Through Integrating Biotechnology and Artificial Intelligence

Cervical cancer (CC) continues to be a major worldwide health concern, profoundly impacting the lives of countless females worldwide. In low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), where CC prevalence is high, innovative, and cost-effective approaches for prevention, diagnosis, and treatment are vital. These approaches must ensure high response rates with minimal side effects to improve outcomes. The study aims to compile the latest developments in the field of CC, providing insights into the promising future of CC management along with the research gaps and challenges. Integrating biotechnology and artificial intelligence (AI) holds immense potential to revolutionize CC care, from MobileODT screening to precision medicine and innovative therapies. AI enhances healthcare accuracy and improves patient outcomes, especially in CC screening, where its use has increased over the years, showing promising results. Also, combining newly developed strategies with conventional treatment options presents an optimal approach to address the limitations associated with conventional methods. However, further clinical studies are essential for practically implementing these advancements in society. By leveraging these cutting-edge technologies and approaches, there is a substantial opportunity to reduce the global burden of this preventable malignancy, ultimately improving the lives of women in LMICs and beyond.

A Systematic Review of Cervical Cancer Mobile Applications and a Future Directions for Developers

OBJECTIVE

The objective of this study is to evaluate the quality of mobile health (mHealth) applications that promote cervical cancer awareness and provide screening assistance, with an emphasis on apps available on the Google Play Store and iOS.

METHODS

From December 2023 to February 2024, we assessed mobile applications focused on cervical cancer screening that are available on Google Play and Apple iTunes. The "Cervical Cancer," "Mobile Application," "Pap Test," "Cervical Cancer Guide," "Human Papillomavirus," plus "Cervical Screening are the keywords used to search the applications." Data collection includes features such as application name, pricing, download metrics, invention date, last update, affiliation, online access, login requirements, and notification functionality, which were gathered in Excel. Interrater reliability based on four reviewers' independent judgments, varied from 0.75 to 0.83.

RESULT

In our research, we found 25 apps (16 on the Google Play Store and 9 on iOS). After a thorough review, only 14 relevant apps were included. According to the MARS rating, Rise Against Cancer received the highest score (3.9), followed by FightHPV and Cervical Cancer Forum (3.8). Rise Against Cancer (29), HPV Vaccine (28), and CDC STI Tx Guidelines (28) scored highest in the APPLICATIONS rating system. Hope 4 All and OCI Cervibreast closely matched the statements, meeting seven of the thirteen requirements each.

CONCLUSION

Future app developers should produce user-friendly, often updated mHealth applications that include high-quality cervical cancer awareness and screening content. These apps should provide validated information and pleasant graphic effects.

This review examines current preventive methods, including the success of HPV vaccines such as Gardasil and Cervarix, and the effectiveness of screening techniques, from cytology to HPV DNA testing. It noted the limitations faced by primary and secondary preventive measures, particularly in low-resource settings, which include access to vaccines and effective screening procedures. Emerging technologies in cervical cancer prevention, such as liquid-based cytology, molecular testing, and AI, promise to improve early detection and diagnosis accuracy and efficiency. The potential of precision medicine to customize treatment based on individual risk factors was discussed. It explores the innovation in genetic editing techniques, such as CRISPR/Cas9, in targeting HPV oncoproteins, the advent of immunotherapy, the role of tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes, and the prospects of biomarkers in improving early detection. Research and technological advancements are leading to transformative changes in cervical cancer prevention. These developments suggest a path toward improved screening, diagnosis, and treatment that could significantly reduce the global burden of the disease. However, realizing the full potential of these advances requires inclusive research and international collaboration to overcome access disparities, particularly in resource-limited settings.

Cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) represents a significant precursor to cervical cancer, posing a considerable threat to women's health globally. This comprehensive review examines recent advancements in the management of CIN, encompassing screening, diagnosis, and treatment modalities. The etiology and pathogenesis of CIN are explored alongside an analysis of traditional and emerging screening techniques, including liquid-based cytology and molecular biomarkers. Treatment options, from minimally invasive procedures to immunotherapy approaches, are evaluated for efficacy and potential impact on patient outcomes. Furthermore, this review highlights the implications of these findings for clinical practice, emphasizing the importance of staying abreast of evolving guidelines and integrating innovative strategies into routine care.
